Crotalus - Yes, i was curious what that was too.

Hi all,
That double pinned Wilton C0 is still for sale I asked about the other day, but it seems the seller is finally seeing some value in it. Whats the most you'd pay for one? He's now asking 250..

I does look in good shape and has the swivel base.
Looking forward to opinions
Cheers

It looks to be in good shape but inspect it for any flaws. If your going to use it and like it then see if $175 buys it maybe go to $200. It would clean up nice with some simple green and some kroil

Whats all this chatting, where is all the vise pic's, well I have to get us back on track, here is something even to big for the repair thread. I was worried this big guy would not fit on my machine but it just barley did. This sick vise came from Kansas and was abused in it's earlier years. This weekend I'll know what shape the new choppers will look like. I can envision them but you never know what you find buried in this big heavy casting. The jaw steel came in in it's own packaging, to heavy for the steel company in Chicago to add my other materia for the UPS guys. OH, I muscled this guy all by myself. You have to come up with ways to move these big guys when you work in a one man shop, especially where I live. I'll keep you posted on this fix when I get her done. Cutting 9" jaws that are this big will be my next challenge. Oldie, Demoman and myself thought a Parker type of jaws are what this guy needs. Are we back on track....

I picked this up the other day, Wilton's aren't available here in the UK.

Guy i bought it off say he only used it a few times and i can believe it, it's in mint condition.

I'm debating stripping it and hitting it with Snap on Extreme green though :headscrat

Boatman: thanks for stepping out and giving your thoughts. it wasn't a bad answer and might even be correct and sometimes the guys that maybe know the answers don't always have a bedside manner telling you that you were maybe wrong. in Outlaw's case i'm sure he was just trying to inject a little of his humor and not trying to put you down.

I know you are a fantastic craftsman and would blow away most of us here on GJ with your work so keep asking questions and making posts where you might not be 100% correct cause i for one love all the posts you make when you are teaching or showing us things you DO KNOW the answers to.

by the way i ask a lot of questions and more than a few times i'm not correct in my answers to some member's questions, but at 61 i'm still learning something everyday and hopefully will keep learning until i pass on to the big garage in the sky.

Mark: your answer certainly makes sense. i wonder if some of the castings were made with straight holes too? i can't believe all the straight ones i own were drilled out at or after leaving the factories, but maybe they were?

Rosso: while that Record vice looks pretty nice in it's factory BLUE you have my vote to make it Extreme or Grabber Green and if you want to try a wrinkled primer under the Green that might even look better. YOUR VISE AND YOUR COLOR is the unwritten rule. good luck

72: i sent you a PM and hope the vise checks out if you get to see it in person. just know that it looks bigger in the pictures, but for a 3.5 inch wide jaw vise it's a good vise to own.

AXE: a lot of my old columbians seem to have a light grey, but honestly i don't really pay attention to much of those cause they are down on the list as KEEPERS for me. that said i wouldn't sell an 8 inch one if an old one in decent shape showed up. nice collection and how about a few pictures?

i've seen several Columbians in a black and i think some were a sort of green too.

Welcome to GJ and sounds like you have a vice for vises (vices) so welcome to this group too where we all enable each other to buy a vise cause we like them maybe sometimes more than just becuase we NEED ONE.

Kevin you need a Wesco 2 wheeled hydraulic lift handtruck. Best investment you will EVER make. I'll send you picks of mine.

Joe, I wouldn't say you paid too much for the Ridge.---Two weeks ago I was going to plunk down $1600.00 plus shipping for a 81S Simplex Ridge when it got pulled off the block.

Holy cow!

Its really clean, some welding snot on it. I'm 1 for 2 this week on 8" vises. At first I thought this was a Columbian. This one was online for a week, i was the first caller.

This one lessens the pain of losing the 8" Reed.

Joe, I sold mine because it could not serve as a weld table. My shop is to small for both. I really do not have issues moving this heavy stuff around, I have chain hoists set up where I need them, built special flat bars that bolt on to my CNC that I can slide mold plates, vises on but when I was building Injection Molds I needed a lift table. My weld table rolls up to the CNC and matches my clamp table.

KMS, is that Demo's 109?

Yes, he trusted me with it and it's like a kid in a candy store.

This will be an interesting watch, as are all your vise fixes. Great to see you saving this behemoth.

Thanks econotrk, I am taking pic,s as I go. I will mention, this casting took pure nickle better then the expensive TIG Eutectic 224 I like so well. I just do not like the color pure Nickle leaves you. This Reed 109 was welded with a arc rod of some kind, looks like they made a soft cast block and welded it in place that could not take any abuse.

Joe, great score! I don't think you overpaid at all.

Rev Kev, can't wait to see how that 109 turns out, there is no better man for the job!

I should be clear. I was joking when I said I overpaid for the vise! The problem, you see, is that I am a cheap ******* and for me to pay over $200 for anything makes my skin crawl

FMC: thanks for the 411. shouldn't that Parker also have 976 on the other side that we can't see in the picture? or a different # if its not a 6 incher or an older model?

Yes it should, but I have a 955 where you can clearly see the marks of it being taken off with a grinder. So if he has no number on the other side, someone removed it, or a casting flaw where they forgot to drop in the number?

Here is something different. I made this small wise myself when I was 15-16 years old in high school class. That was some 34 years ago. The first time I used metal lathe ever but I even made the handle, screw and the spring myself. The jaws are made of an old file. I first removed the hardening and then cut them into size and then rehardened them. Oh, and also the first time I ever used a welding machine or infact any other metal work machine.

Now when computers and CNC are the norm it looks a bit crude work but back then it felt like an achievement. I still have it in my office.

2wpus6q.jpg

Even by today's standards and fancier equipment we have at our disposal, I think that is an excellant job

I realize you just stated you were joking, but I would say for an 8" that looks in decent shape, that's a "you ****" deal. Well done

It's hard to say....camera angle is a bit odd. Regardless, I think it's worth the $100 they want for it. That's too far of a drive for me or I would have run over there.

Been working on my Emmert I picked up 7 years ago. I knew it had a broken cam when I bought it and I got it for a good price. Drove to Chicago to pick it up.

Got it home and started dis-assembly to clean up 100 years of goo. Found that the beam was snapped off where the round threaded end meets the square body. It still worked fairly well broken or I would have noticed it when I bought it. Put it in a milk crate for the 'future'.

Some students thought it would be fun to measure all the parts and draw it and create a working assembly and work toward casting the broken parts. The beam wasn't really possible for us to machine on our equipment so I knew I'd have to pick up a used one.

Fast forward 7 years:

I randomly found a beam for a good price a few weeks ago, now I'm looking for a cam. The thing I have that looks like a cam is a 3D print of a drawing of a cam a student did 7 years ago. We tried to ram it in green sand as a pattern to cast in ductile iron and he left off some draft in a few critical areas so it doesn't pull out well enough to use. My original broken cam walked off.

Looking for one to complete this thing. Until then it looks cool.

Having watched this thread since it started. I thought it was about time I put my old Record 75 on here. it has been in the family at least 70 years. it is a unbelievably handy tool with the anvil and conduit bender built in. My grandad always called it the mechanics vice. He originally fitted it to the heavy ornate cast iron ex pub table base which is a great height and heavy enough to hold fast. although today I had to refit it with new bolts.https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-uuSJGKaqhDWW11LVp1VV9yeFRFeDhINlNKNVFGZS0zZ3o0/view?usp=sharing

Gizmosity an others, I have at least one cam maybe two and other parts for both the turtle back and KI Emmertt parts vises. No dogs or beams but yes for jaws. I do also have some parts for the smaller patter makers vise that looks like a miniature K1 rear jaw, beam and tilt bracket.

Thanks Mike, just to show how big this guy is I just wrapped up a Prentiss #19 and it looks pretty tiny on this big Reed. I love popcorn and so does my Grandkids.

londonsteve, maybe try posting your pic's again, would like to see your old Record 75.

Good to see vises being posted again.
