havin' a beer watching tv with the wife. Her brother calls, and I hear some odd convo involving "8mm and 9mm". Turns out he'd been here with her mother and gone into my box and taken my snapon 8 and 9 mil wrenches. He's since LOST the 8 and says he'll replace it with craftsman.

She doesn't get why I'm severely pissed. I realize they're just wrenches and all I had to do was pull some spares out to cover the hole for a few days, but it's the principal. i can't imagine, without permission rooting though someones tool box and removing something of theirs.

If he'd asked i'd have given him the spares, due mainly in the fact that I know they'd either not be returned or be broken in some way. he's an idiot. Oh, and a doctor.

/rant. helluva first thread, but I know you guys get it.

Replace with Craftsmans? And, he's got a doctor's salary to throw around?

You tell that little weasel that he'll be replacing SO with SO.

Go to snapon.com with him on the computer; order up and ship it out to you! :) Another reason I don't lend stuff out much anymore.... no one cares as much as you do! Tell him that his tools are like his high end medical equipment/tools.... doesn't he understand? Another reason to have tools secured and under lock/key; you have the key on your person and no one else!

Oh yeah, ER doc. He has no money. I'm fair at math, but I can't work this problem.

Tell him you are going to replace his stethoscope with a Fisher-Price model.

Hahahaha

YES, lock the box.

I hope the one he lost is newer style so the set will match.

I know now. I never thought i'd have an issue with a locked house, a locked garage, and a big dog. It's locked now.

I'm not a high roller, I have great tools and a lot of them, but my sets don't match. If I had some of what I've seen on here, I'd be losing my mind.

who in the hell would let a doctor fix anything? actually my bil is an anesthesioligist and pretty handy. he is pretty **** about things and being organised. i would let him borrow anything. now some of my other bils............... actually if your bil is stepping up to replace it with something it is good. he just need a little guidance. a crappy bil would bring it back broken or claim he know nothing about it or where it went.

I would just let it be known that there is a huge difference between the two wrenches and cost is just one part of it.

took me a second to decode "bil". Yeah, he owned up to it. He said he'd replace them. I'm in Nc, this was last week and he's in southern part of SC right now. Funny, even though he said he'd replace the missing wrench i know I'll never see either.

Maybe it's me, and my problem. But that seems like a big hole in my tool selection. A hole that can't go weeks.

Wife doesn't get why I'm very unhappy over this. The guy brings in more money than we claim as a family. Yet he doesn't have a dime to his name. He doesn't take care of anything he has. He borrowed a chain last year, when he walked out the door, I told my wife "this is the last time that chain will exist as a solid length". A month later when I got it back, it was in 3 pieces.

beat the wife. (just kidding)
mine would never lend out anytools without asking me.
only one neighbor get to borrow anything anyways.
He alway brings it back in the same condition and every once and a while a new tool will come back with it.

ER doctor and has no money? That should tell you something right there. Like you said, he must be an idiot. I'd break his little fingers if he did what you described.

How and why do some people end up losing someone else's tools? That's just disrespectful. Don't ask him to, flat out tell him he will replace them with Snap-Ons!!!

the brother in law and MIL were here to let the dogs out since we were both working late. She had no more knowledge of it than I. To be perfectly honest she'd probably be more straight forward about it than I would. Had he asked her, she'd have called me at the minimum or just made him wait and ask me.

And that wouldn't have mattered, I would have gladly lent him some wrenches. They would have been out of my spare box though, not my starting lineup.

all I can say in his defense is he's a new doctor. I know he owes a ton. He's a complete idiot though. He needed the tools to work on the exploder that he left to get repo'ed and they never came and got. Idiot blew the ****** on his exploder, took his mothers second vehicle, totaled, now has borrowed his fathers second vehicle.

Probably never will unless you loan out something of value to her without her permission. Neither will the BIL. Like others have said, lock 'em up. That ***** to have to lock up your tools at home.

On a related note, my dad told me a story about him and his brother. The brother borrowed some tools from dad and never returned them. A few months later dad went over to his house and found his brother having a garage sale........with dads tools. :lol_hitti

People who don't use hand or power tools for a living have no respect for them.

Don't worry, the missing wrench will show up in a few months from the emergency surgery required to remove them from a patient of his :bounce:

But I do agree with most here lock your toolbox and shop.

Reminds me of my ****** neighbor. Borrows a few tools and manages to lose one. It wasnt anything super nice, but considering he never replaced it, hell never borrow another tool. Hes the kind of guy that wants to borrow an o2 socket and gets around to fixing it 3 weeks later. Lazy as phuck!

lets just say, the movie "the 40 year old virgin" hit a little close to home for the wife.

And welcome to the board Sig!!
Thank you. i lurk a lot. I was going to post a few weeks ago, but as stupid as it sounds I couldn't because my username. Sig was my dogs name, and he got out and got clipped by a car. he was my best friend and garage right hand man. Gettin' past it slowly though.

To keep peace, I deal with my side of the family and wife deals with her side. Let your wife know that Snapon wrenches need to replace Snapon wrenches, but no point in making a big stink, its a wrench, if Craftsman shows up, buy the new ones yourself.

I got that one for $800 loaded with tools. I had inquired on CL about it and started to grasp the fact it was loaded with tools. I went to see and couldn't pay him quick enough. Lots of snap on, several hundred dollars in air tools. i seriously thought it had to be hot, but after some checking (it was fairly local) I found out it was legit.

This reminds me the time my uncle let his son borrow his wood splitter

(I built it back when I was in mechanics school as a project, was a real beefy unit 13HP honda, 2 stage pump and 45 ton capacity ram).

Uncle said make sure when your done you put it in your garage and lock it up.

Low and behold he left it out and it got stolen.

I dont think he talked to his son for a good 6 months

He never got a replacement one. The son moved away now they don't talk period.

I felt bad for him and let him borrow mine when he needs it. Poor uncle did everything for his kids too.

I vote for making him replace SO with SO :)

As a side note: I went to school with a few guys who eventually became doctors. Some fields don't pay well at all, if you don't see patients. (Others do, of course, like radiology). One guy I know doesn't make that much. Another guy had loans and really heavy insurance premiums and expensive machinery to pay off (you think an SO box is expensive :) ). Not like we need to cry for these guys, but just to put in perspective that not every MD is loaded.
