Those are great little vises, and having it from your dad is even cooler! I've been on the lookout for that exact vise for a while....I'll find one eventually!

I thought you had one laying in that pic you sent me? Do you sell that too?

Thanks for your Parker info Joe. This one will be ready for work (soft duty) once I make a collar to replace that dang bolt.

You know I may have one of these early parkers in my shop. Whats your jaw size? I will send you my collar to copy if it is the same size. Let me get a photo.

OK. I need some help from the Parker crew. This thing was delivered by Mr Postman early today. It is an unusual Parker but is in pretty good shape. The jaws are 3 1/4". There are no casting marks but it does have stamping on the front jaw(?). In addition, the missing collar was attached from the top.

Looks pretty early. Did Parker stamp their jaws in the early days?

Here is my early vise which I believe is a Parker. I haven't restored it yet but LOTS of similarities to yours...what do you think? 4" jaws.

Thats an answer I've never entertained. Is it possible the Howard Iron works had these private labeled by Parker? I know these jaws are all hand fit. I cant imagine a company going to all that trouble and then buying the jaws, but nothing would surprise me.

KC--Parker jaws on a Howard vise. Interesting. It might explain why there are patent marks stamped all over the dynamic jaw.

Rusty--I have a picture of the underside of the slide.

Joe--Your vise looks like a big brother to this one.

Here are more pictures.

Here is the underside of the dynamic. Notice the protruding pins.

And here is the underside of the static. Notice the botched drilling job.

DSCN1153.jpg

Here is a close up of the jaws from the side. They do not have the fit and finish of my other Parker vises.

So maybe this is a Howard with Parker jaws. Either that or this one was made in the summer of 1881 when B.J. "Bucky" Parker came to work with his dad. After many false starts on the floor, Bucky was "promoted" to marketing where he championed the black japan finish for years because "it was what customers really need".

It's the version with the tall, think jaws, and it's been broken and brazed so it doesn't really work. Mostly it's for parts in case I find the model with the short/wide jaws that needs a base.

Charger: do you own a baby bullet with a power arm? by chance would the power arm fit on that clamp to give it a few more options?

Jim: yep your Parker looks like an oldie and interesting that another company might be involved in the making of yours.

ALL: or would maybe ZOOMIE or another member have that clamp and also a power arm? i like my style clamp better with the power arm since i'm using it at the same bench, but if i was taking the vise out and about and maybe had it clamped to a sawhorse, deck or trailer hitch for quick use a solid clamp on would work better.

I use to but some guy wanted it more than I did so I sold it to him... I'm pretty sure it would be able to be clamped to a power arm pretty easy though

Here is my Wilton 400. Just got done with repainting it a few days ago. I am thinking about sanding all of the lettering (or brushing silver) on the sides to let it stand out more. Painted with House of Kolor Brandywine over black, and silver marble. Here are some pics!

Charger: if i recall correctly my baby has 2 date stamps on it in 1946 & 1947. it also was sandblasted i think with glass media and painted grey just to keep it from rusting until he decided on a color and then he decided to sell it to me when i was buying a bunch of his other tools.

my guess is that yours was originally a grey. the early Chicago ones were a satin green and the newer ones seem to be more of a verde green.

you are welcome to post up your baby's pictures with the date stamp on the Wilton Date stamp thread to add to the data base that has close to 250 vises now. while you are on the thread you might take a look at all the bullet vises and make your own research on what you think is the original color. as i've said many times before YOUR VISE, YOUR COLOR. if it was mine i'd either strip and put on BLO or maybe try to put a wrinkle texture under a EXTREME GREEN.

Drive, I have a Baby Bullet Clamp-on and a Power-arm, but not together.---Right now the power-arm has a Baby Swivel-head Fulton on it.---I'm almost positive Zoomie has both to.

Nick, the paint on your Wilton looks like candy apple red and a 1/4'' deep.---I like it!

Joe,, Micky O posted a 1/2'' jaw Baby Bullet salesman sample in the (The Biggest Bench Vise Ever Made) thread, on page 3, posts 50, 53, 56, 58, and 92 on page 5.---If he's on the up and up.---See what you think.

My guess is that it is a very early Parker. Stamping looks like "No 1" with "Parker" and "Patented June **" "1854".

Looks pretty early. Did Parker stamp their jaws in the early days?

Jimreed 2160 - Heres another pic

Can't say who actually made those vises, but here is the patent trail:

The first patent here for Parker is 11137, issued 20 June 1854. It is for improvements in vise contruction, specifically thae additon of the steel bar in the slide. But if you look closely at the image, you can see that the retaining collar is in the shape of an upside down "L". This patent is the earliest Parker patent I have found, but I am still looking.

The second Parker patent is 57957, issued 11 Sep 1866. This is another patent for improvements in vise construction. If you look closely at this image, the retaining collar is still the upside down "L".

The third patent is 71498, issued 26 Nov 1967. This patent is specifically for the classic Parker retaining collar. This is the collar that was used until Parker was bought out by Union. It you read through the text, Parker is recommending that the face of the slide be machined down to compensate for wear.

The vises are probably no later than early 1868 but could be much earlier i.e. pre 1854.

I struggle with analysis paralysis and this project has languished for far too long. This thread has given me the inspiration to finally get it done. I have a plethora of vises as you all can imagine and couldn't decide which vise to mount on here.

IMG_2194_zpsfgdjbkmx.jpg

But finally decided on this one due to the rotating jaws, and the goal is versatility.

IMG_2197_zpsz1oszzwg.jpg

The top of the jaws can be as low as 28" and as high as 46".
