will these oil seals work?

I need a couple of oil seals for a tool I'm rebuilding but I cannot find any of the same size. I don't see any markings on them. The dimensions are:

1/2" shaft:
O.D.: 0.805" .
I.D.: 0.500" ( or 1/2" )
W: 0.158" ( or 5/32" )

3/8" shaft:
O.D.: 0.625" ( or 5/8" )
I.D.: 0.376" ( or 3/8" ) ( I assume this is the same size as the shaft? )
W: 0.141" ( or 9/64" )

I found some that were pretty close:

1/2" shaft:
Shaft Diameter: 0.5000"
O.D.: 0.8020"
W: 0.2031"

3/8" shaft:
Shaft Diameter: 0.3750"
O.D.: 0.6250"
W: 0.1250"


I can live with the extra width, they'll still work. Will the small difference in the outside diameters be to much and cause leakage?

It looks like you are good to go on the smaller seal. Just make sure that it has the same lip configuration (or an upgrade) and because it is thinner, you will be able to seat it in a different spot from the wear on the shaft.

The larger seal looks close enough. If you can measure your housing if should be a little smaller bore than the OD of the old seal. The dimensions listed for oil seals generally give the OD for the bore that they will fit in, rather than the actual OD of the seal. If it is a little loose, you can always use a "sticky" type of gasket sealer to hold it in place.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think the OD of the seals in the catalog was the bore size. I only found one seal that would fit, it's a SKF/Chicago Rawhide 709001. The few place I can find a picture of one, they look to have no metal casing, but then I found a picture of one that looks like it might have an internal metal case. If they were normally priced I'd just buy it and try it. Pretty expensive though for such a small seal, with shipping it's going to be around $25

I just confirmed that neither of these seals have metal casings, both are all Nitrile. There is no outward pressure on either of these and I *think* they should work but would like input on that. What do you guys think?

If the width is no concern, I don't see a problem. Cover the OD of the seal with RTV and tap it home. I probably don't need to mention it, but check the surface of, and if necessary polish the shaft when you install the new seal. Nobody likes it when a new seal leaks...:)

Already polished up ;) A 25$ seal that is smaller than a quarter leaking right off would be incredibly irritating. No idea why those things are that expensive. The smaller of the two is only 5$ Trying to decided if a should replace the a flange bushing since I have it apart. The shaft that goes through the bushing is a little looser than I think it should be, but I'm not to sure how much play there should be between the bushing and the shaft. I'm assuming it should fit in without being driven and turn once it's in. If that's the case the one I have is worn out.

Can't find a steel flange bushing that will fit, so it looks like I'll try it with the original one :\
