Fretters: i have no reason to doubt what you say is true and i'll have to correct my memory about the origins of Swinden vices. if you sure they are English as i'm positive you are were they the first version of the CHINESE WONDER VICE?

also while i have you on the hook do you recall an English made Craftsman vice or maybe CW or Dutch does?

I love a good "market conversation", because as I said, I've cash ******* in these "things", LOL!

I welcome all to discuss, or not, but I see the prices too, and some of us (tiny Hollands or whatever...), see the value in a "rare" specimen...

I hope our cast iron turns out to be gold, or at least, we have some fun...

Meant no harm just saw a nice collection, was shocked at the C-3 because im the dumb *** that passed on one for half that at an auction recently.

2 recent purchases.

My Reed 103 1/2A and Charles Parker 955. Picked up the Reed in October and just got the Parker 2 weeks ago. Only disassembled, degreased and wire brushed the Reed. The Parker is completely broken down now. Anyone have info on the "A" designation on the Reed? Seems exactly like the "R" model.

The Oswego/Sawyer from over your side of the pond seems to have been the inspiration for the Asian ones. They're far more similar to those than the Swindens, in design.

No Drives, didn't put anyone out of business. I saw a broken vise at the high school last fall and told the shop teacher not to throw it away as I could probably find a home for the good parts. They did a remodel of the woodshop this past summer, smaller but better I think. Anyway they got all new vises and I got a call to come pick these up.

A Palmgren with a weld on the screw end, and what looks to me to be a giant Reed swivel base, marked 77C on the bottom. And an Eagle oil can to top it off.

I have a question. Didn't someone post an article on here recently about pittsburgh rr vises? I can't seem to find anything but I know I read an article about them selling some back east????

I've been keeping an eye out for vises for a while and seen nothing...and then yesterday I committed to what looks to be a minty Craftsman 506–51811 (picking it up tomorrow). Today, I see a CL ad for a Reeds 104 1/2.

Question for you vise gurus - what would be a good price for a Reeds 104 1/2? It's a 4 hole mount model with the rounded front knob and looks to be in very good shape. It would be an 1 1/2 hour drive one way. I don't need it, but I love the Hollands/Reeds vises.

I have 2 Reeds in my modest little collection. As you probably already know, condition is everything. Assuming the vise you are considering is not cracked or welded and runs smoothly and not too rusted, I would pay as much as $100 out here. Many GJ members back east get much better deals. (You know who I am talking about :evil:)
I drove an hour and a half each way for a nice Wilton 9350 paying $80
Sometimes the deals are not right there in your back yard.

That Morgan is one big beast for a 4 incher. Do you plan to keep the old safety yellow paint? Try scrubbing it down with Simple Green or equivalent and dry it out with a heat gun and apply a few coats of BLO and see how cool it looks.
But remember...your vise, your color.

I was very happy with how smoothly the screw turns and how nicely the jaws line up. The guy I bought it from was very well versed in vises and had a number awaiting restoration and simply didn't have the time to referb this Morgan. He had a 100lb Yost I really wanted but couldn't justify the cost..

It was kicked around in a DPW garage for who knows how long. Definitely used hard and put away wet type of tool but it keeps coming back for more and hasn't skipped a beat since I picked it up a couple years ago. Has some good character for sure haha

Hard to say...I know I should give it a proper resto especially after seeing the amazing job most GJers do restoring their vises. Part of me just wants to bolt it down and continue to use it. At a minimum I will simple green soak it and regrease the screw

Looks to me like something that snuck out of the factory before it was finished. Maybe an employee "rescued" it from the scrap bin at work. As has been said before, a baby bullet fits easily into a guy's lunch box.

MB: that Reed 104.5 is a lot better vise than the Craftsman, but you are asking for values from some of us that might own just more than a few vises. value and what we would pay are most times an entirely different thing.

I have a pristine Reed 104 that i probably wouldn't sell for a couple benjamins if that helps, but it is an almost new 80 year old vise except for patina (surface rust).

i've driven much more than 90 minutes to pick up a vise or tool i wanted especially if it doesn't come up often cause the drive back if it ended up being in the condition advertised you couldn't wipe the smile off my face no matter what i paid for it.

any pictures? the Reed 104.5's are pretty stout so just look for user abuse or see if it might have been dropped and if ok i'd say it's a keeper.
