I use a small stainless wire hand brush on the trim to clean and brighten them up. Havnt tried to polish them yet. The way the crimped those on makes it difficult to get off without damage I found out.

Well, I know havnt posted in a while or finished my stories of remaining boxes and that's because I made a change to the layout of the wall. Originally, I thought DP would be just fine sitting on bench but ideas in my mind and what works don't always see eye to eye. I also had 2 other 6D chest that I didn't put in the layout. My plan was to make service cart from the chests as if craftsman made a service cart back in 1970. I ended up not having the floor space and I wanted my whole G/R collection all in one spot. So I swapped a bunch of stuff around. Here's how it looks currently.

89610df8bf5f468a021b4618c4ff05d9.jpg

To use the chest and still have the ability to moved bottom rollers out I made a wall bracket from bed frame.
01baa8b5ab732972765aa9604f6a95de.jpg

Then I hung it on the wall.

f07337f44a0005f0f3c4474d196967b8.jpg

Then I put the small carry boxes under the 6D chest.

Moving the DP to the corner using one of the brackets I made for the 10D chest.

9ef5f75c973fbbb419217e4ea96de166.jpg

This was big fix cause with DP on bench I was limited to a 29" tall DP and now I can fit a 35" DP. This DP was a free so I've been using it. My plan is to day day find a old Craftsman or vintage DP for this area and now with more space a have few more options. This area need a custom bracket to be made up and plywood I used from top on the bottom roller cause I had it and knew it would fit the bracket. It's in mock up phase right now until I figure out final plan. I have few ideas kicking around. That goes for the bench top for work area also. I still got old floating bench frame and top. I thought I was done with this area but I changed things around to work better. Of course I lost some bench area but I have now 6 bottom rollers as mobile benches, my HF bench, my big and small mobile tables so losing 26in off this bench and making it "work and function better" is sure worth it. I really like to work on mobile tables anyway but only really only need the bench top for small projects and place to mount a big vise. Not sure which vise I'm using just yet.
My Reed 204 or 6in Chinese.

I really need old 519X for this bench to fit the Craftsman theme.

I love it! However, (forgive me for being critical) you are hiding my favorite item by turning it sideways. Just because it's rough doesn't mean you should hide that 9D cabinet!

I have the opportunity to buy another 3D cabinet from someone who is cleaning up a very messy hoarder's garage. The price is right but it's not the 9D unit I am looking for! *sigh*

The wall came out great, keep an eye out for a bench model 150 drill press and a 519X vise and you'll be complete! Also, by losing some permanent bench space, you'll cut down on clutter. You can pull the roller out when you need a bench, then clean it off and push it back into position. That's pretty awesome!

Thanks man. I really like my 9 drawer too. I was hoping to find another but the 5D and 3D drawers all line up together. Nope I'm not trying to hide. It's turned that way simply cause one it didn't match the others and two I simply ran out of wall space. LOL. My vision was bookend cabinets with bench between. Unfortunately, years back when I did the electrical in garage all the switches are right there just above the 9 drawer. So I couldn't block them and turning it sideways actually fit the space and finishes off the end. I really like the look. Now if a had a full 20' of I would have a totally different look going on here but since I only have just only 12' to fit all the current collection this was only way to work it. I do plan to sand and paint most of the boxes down the road. I think it easier the get the layout finalized, put stuff in them, and get them working.

My system for painting might seem odd but works for me.

I pull the box from its spot.

Pull all drawers out with stuff still in them.

Then I repaint the otter box. The paint I use is great.

While the paint is drying a clean the slides, wax them, and restall them.

Then put box back in its spot.

Then I restall the drawers and pull each out one by one and sand and paint front.

I put the drawer contents In separate containers so I can still find the stuff and use it.

When I finish painting drawers I put them back in box and use the box as a drying rack.

Once cured I put stuff back in drawer.

I really like this system cause I keeps the garage cleaner and I'm not trying to reorganize stuff of a freshly painted box.

Thanks Nine. My friend offer me a old vintage DP while back. I can't recall brand but thinking it was a Dunlap? At time I had to measure space I had. As far as I know it's still bolted to his bench. Havnt talked to him in awhile. He has things going on and I just been busy doing other things and really hasn't been a priority at the moment.

I really like having the the bottoms mobile. I didn't want to dent or damage tops anymore than they been so simple plywood cut to fit top works. Once I paint them they will blend right in. I really enjoy the height on the taller 5D and 9D. Prefect working height for me and the 3D are great to put saws on. I really don't like clutter or should say a cluttered look. Theses seem to really help tuck all the **** that seems you never have a home for.

I honestly don't know where I came up with idea to hang chest on the wall. It must have been one of the late night starring at the wall drinking a beer thinking "what if I do this". I really happy I came up with the idea. Being I don't store hand tools in these they don't get too heavy so moving them isn't that much of a issue except for the one holding all the DP stuff.

My next thought is how to make center 2 drawers one rolling bench without drill holes all in them?

Last week I decided what I would do with the bench for the Wall of Craftsman. This is what I came up with.

10ddb8b5c121586f4504259eeb9fa5ae.jpg

I know it's not much to look at but there's more here than meets the eye. I made a mobile bench.

e12f233ff8624acd274b783c852924f8.jpg

What I ended up doing is attaching 2 bottom rollers together. On the bottom I made some brackets to attach bottom to each other then hammered plastic shim between them

058c3d9a73c7153bee494261b4224052.jpg

You can see from the front that the gap is equal from top to bottom.
ad7ce5a57b27d1f93c8966be8e5355fb.jpg

The top I used the plywood inserts I made for the top of the bottom rollers to attach the bigger top. The inserts where made slightly bigger so I could wedge them into recess in top of the cabinets thus keeping the top piece in place. I was still able to keep my universal mounting system I made up.

7289bb88621660bfb4941b197ec2fc7d.jpg

When I need to I can roll this out use it and took it back and this is heavy enough to use the vise without it moving too much. I still need to paint it and get a hardboard top but think that was good for today.

Nice!!

Thanks guys. The more I thought about it putting the floating bench back would give me less working space between the bottom rollers and those 6D chest and possibly lose space to put those carry boxes. I didn't want to drill holes it these so hopefully this works. After a few uses I will see. Only issue I found it trying to get this back in its home with 8 swivel casters cause it's a tight fit.

Hey Taumac, Have you ever needed to find replacement casters? I have two rolling cabinets, but one seems to have non-original castors. You know what that means.........
my drawers don't line up. Not good for me either. I'll post a pic to show you what I mean.

I havnt try to find any replacement caster. I have used 2 in cheap caster that only 3 holes line up on the bottom. Many of these cabinets offered many caster sizes and have multiple hole patterns to bolt up a caster. It's just a matter of finding ones you want and seeing if matches a pattern on bottom.

G, did you finish the stories behind all the boxes? It's always interesting to hear what history is behind the things we buy here.

The story of box 9.

2D portable.
11/69

Well, is guys on the Garage Journal Florida Chapter are a bunch of enablers. The FC went to a big show for the Flywheelers show which is a HUGE event for antiques engines and tractors. I went down with 2 other FC members and walked the swap meet area. There I found other 2D portable box. I sat there debating on it cause I knew what I wanted to spend on it. I don't see these to often and I consider them rare because the other one Ive seen in person is in my garage. LOL. At this point my buddy over there CB is saying just buy it but I'm unsure. After few minutes I say ok and bought the box. It was one of those days I wish I packed a mini hand truck cause I had to carry damn toolbox rest of the afternoon. I ended up with few things that day but my enabling skills where better that day and buddy CB spent more than me. LOL! Good times.

Story of box 10, 11, and 12.
10D chest 5/70
5D bottom 10/67
6D chest 2/64.

After few months of staring at the WOC I got to thinking if I get rid of big red cabinet I then can find another 5D bottom and 10D chest and make bookend towers on each side with bench between. I really really liked that idea so the hunt was one. Once again the FC guys helped in my search. It's not uncommon for us the text or hehe enable each other with CL deals daily. Every time one popped up they texted me and for the longest time. I don't know wether or not who was getting more frustrated? I know I was but knew my FC buddies where about to kill me. Every time they texted I said nope wrong chest or wrong bottom until one day I said YES that's it. I don't know who was happier me or him? LOL. Finally I found last 2 pieces? There he is at this fund raiser and I'm at work trying to look and text and do my job phone calls all within 5 mins. He got the deal. I'm happy and now he's real happy.

Oh box 12? Well that happen few days later when he went to a garage sale. He ended up buying a whole box of tools because that was the deal. Well I get a text saying hey want this? Want this? A matching 6D chest to my other one. LOL. If you don't know me or my garage I always have twins or sometimes triplets. I said sure LOL. The GJ knows all to well about my craftsman toolbox addiction. At a FC gathering at my place they even made me a sign.

bf7b6785a94585b9ee0ca4ade6b76f89.jpg

I'll let you guys figure out NMPFG. LOL.

At that time I thought ok buy didn't have a place picked out. I went down to his shop looked around, talked **** and had few beers. It was a great day and another reason I started the whole Florida Chapter in the first place.

I got the boxes home knowing exactly where the 5D and 10D was going but had no idea for the twin 6D chest. Originally, my idea was to make a 1970 Craftsman service cart with one of them but now I have 2! I also wanted ALL the collection on one wall. It's not the WALL OF CRAFTSMAN if not the collection is on one wall. At that point I made a bridge over 2 smaller 3D bottom rollers and put the 6D chest above. It really cut down o bench space but looked great. I really just needed a vise and small area to work since I usually worked on one of the craftsman rollers or a cart.

It's been a journey and fun building the Wall of Craftsman. What will happen from this point forward I don't know. I don't need to sell them off but I hunted and found, I had some great stories and meet good people along the way. [emoji482]

Thank you to all that followed my journey of the Wall of Craftsman and hope you all enjoyed it. [emoji482]

I should update this thread. I put the Wall of Craftsman up for sale first week of Oct. I got some PMs and ended up selling the entire Wall of Craftsman within few days of posting it. I sold it to GJ member DLCwent. I'm very happy the WOC will stay intact and he also plans to keep it that way. He has a fondness and love for these cabinets just as much as I. So even though I don't have the Wall no longer it will continue to live on. [emoji482]

Sad to see it go, but glad to know that the whole thing went to a member who will care for it. The new owner needs to post pictures of the Wall in its new home and keep this thread going. Love to see the new setup.

So, what will you be replacing the Wall with now ?

Well, I had many reasons for going in direction that I did which I discussed in my garage thread. Its nothing nearly as cool as the Wall of Craftsman. I ended up buying 2 more HF44's and a side cabinet.

When I move down the road I will set it up all on one wall.

At first glance many many might think the same as you do. The GJ members who really know me know all the reasons I sold the Wall of Craftsman. I just didn't sell it to make money or so I could buy 2 44's and a side cabinet so let's get that straight.

People know my obsession, love, and knowledge for those cabinets. I didn't sell it for the money and wasn't gonna to sell it to someone that would split them up and sell them. I would only sell them to a person under certain circumstances. Dan is that person that is going to take them, use them, and love them as I would. It makes me happy to see something I built be carried on by someone with same passion I do.
