Mac: Bugatti's don't pop up often here, but i think there was one or two threads about one if you do a google search you might find it cause it was a couple years ago.

that one you posted does look like one and if i recall correctly the Bugatti's have a bolt thru swivel design on them.

ALL: a local GJ member bought an Athol 625 from me and showed me his beater vise he got when he bought his house. it's a Fulton 6 inch wide jaw #23 that needs a bit of help, but the old saw table it sat on was even cooler.

Not a vise , or at least a complete one but I picked up this big wooden lead screw today . It leaped into my hands before I knew it and couldn't put it down. I'm not sure what it came from , maybe a saddle vise? I really don't know. It's big! 27" long. The knob is 4" across and the screw is 2-1/2" dia.

The Wilton magnet struck again....another 1760. It needs new jaws, and but it's otherwise pretty decent. And no, I didn't pay the $165 that they had it listed for! That's my fourth 1760 in about two months. I need to find a 1780 next :D

G-Man, Nice find I picked up a 1765 not long ago. Will you wind up refinishing that one?

All - Does anyone have a source for the various Wilton labels?

That's just stupid.:eyecrazy:
Maybe I should make a few vises, give them a fancy Italian name, and sell them for a few grand.

Looked at what a Bugatti is worth these days? Chump change for someone that owns one...

there is also a set of workbench legs that pair up with the vise. Those are pricey also.

Look up the history before passing judgement.

Is it Silly Money? Yes, but the truly rich can afford it...

I've been surfing the local industrial auctions lately, trying to find deals for my tool collection. The auctions are online, but the people that run them are used to selling huge machines, and do a poor job on the "smaller" tools. I came across a blurry photo of a "vise" with almost no description. I threw down the minimum bid of $25 and won. I arrived to find a beat up a 4" Wilton bullet vise. The vise was welded to a stand, which was secured to the concrete with 4 rusted and bent bolts. I was able to hammer off the bolt heads and lug the whole thing home. The company treated the vise really poorly. The rotating head was welded (poorly) in place as well as the base to it's stand. There were random welds on the anvil and to the jaws. I forgot to take a "before" photo, but here's a photo while I was trying to punch in some Wilton codes to find info online.

After learning how much jaws cost, I made a set of steel and set of aluminum jaws. I threw the vise on the mill so I could flatten out the rough anvil. I greased it all up, made handles for the rotation tighteners and slapped some green paint on it. I'm extremely happy with how it cleaned up!

The date on the bottom was 1984 (I forget the month). It's a 4" bullet.

I made the jaws by drilling holes in some cold rolled steel and using a vee cutter on a CNC mill we have at work to get the cross hatching. It took a while but usually the mill is idle anyway. If I did it again I'd space out the lines a little bit more to get a coarser look, but they came out great. I finished it with a little sanding on a flat surface to deburr. I might go back and add a small vee groove for grabbing on round stock at some point. I seem to cut a lot of little rods or tubes with my tinkering around.

Yep, I'll strip it to bare metal, put two coats of self-etching primer on it, then two coats of Rust-Oleum Hammered Verde Green paint, polish all the brightwork and put it all back together.

You can get the square Wilton badges for the Tradesman line as well as the smaller red/blue badges for the Machinist line from Wilton....free! If you go to their website and find the section for spare parts, and call that number, ask for Tony the vise parts guy, he'll help you out....super friendly folks.

The first 1760 I did started out looking similar, and wound up looking like this:

I'm headed to Poland for work in two weeks. Can you say FPU Bison?

Bulletpruf

If you are seeking Bisons in the wild, beware! They are cunning, devious and crafty creatures.

During this time of year, they are known do disguise themselves as REINDEER!

Very nice! Funny you mention reindeer; these pics are from a few weeks ago. Wife thought we were too warm and toasty in southern Italy so we went to the Arctic (Rovaniemi, Finland) to hang out with Santa and his elves.

Just beautiful. Those 3 curved plates you want to weld on to the I beam could look pretty cool. I find as it is with the I beam and no colors that stand out, it is a very raw/naked beauty.

My vote for best pic of 2016

Santa has been good to me this year. Lots of new vises. This one is on the tree.
If you have one on the tree or under the tree post it up here!

Isn't it funny how something like a vise brings together total strangers who become friends on here.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Hope all had a blessed new year.

I have been wanting one of these Craftsman Crown label vacuum base vises but was waiting for one in nice shape. This one popped up on Ebay and I got it for around $40 since I made an offer for several of his items. Besides the very nice condition it also has the plastic soft jaws still which I didn't even know came with them. The suction cup still works OK, any suggestions for something to treat the rubber?
