IMS 16 spd drill press -- need to change chuck/arbor

Hello,

I want to change over to a smaller chuck that is keyless, as I am going to be using smaller size bits (plus current chuck is a bit old and rusty)

Does anyone know if a Jacob taper type wedge tool is appropriate for removing the chuck on this drill press

Also, can someone recommend a good/decent keyless chuck for this unit?

Hello, Turn the handle all the way down and see if there a slot in shaft above the chuck, if so you can remove the chuck and morse taper adapter at same time with a tapered piece of flat bar like wedge made for this purpose. Chuck can be removed with the wedge you posted if you have the right size for your chuck, size should be written on chuck. Good luck, Jim

NOTE: I think I figured it out: looks the the Morse taper is on the end that fits into the spindle, and the Jacobs taper is hidden inside the chuck (which I'm not going to take off; I'm going to replace the entire chuck/arbor). SO, I'll take off my old chuck/arbor, and measure the Morse taper (length and thick part) to determine which replacement size I need (MT2, MT3, etc)

The info for Morse Taper(MT) or Jacobs Taper(JT) is likely stamped on the chuck or may very likely be on the drill press tag.

Without measuring anything, and if you do have a tang / slotted Morse taper, it is more than likely a #2 for that particular machine. The #1 is really light weight, and a #3 is heavy duty / industrial.. Here is a #2 from my removable spindle, on my South Bend Lathe drill press..

Ok, I'm close to figuring this out.I'd like to keep the current arbor and just change out the chuck. Currently, there is a 3JT chuck on there. Will a 2JT fit on there instead?

Another option is to get a smaller chuck with a straight shank and grab it with the one you have on there.

The 3jt is the taper on the spindle. What you need is a chuck with a 3JT mount that will go small enough to grab the bit you want.

on edit, it looks like the 3JT taper is for the larger chucks, so the first option I suggested may be the best one.

When you rotate the handle and the chuck goes toward the table, do you see a slot like the one I have shown?

If you find a slot in the arbor to eject the current chuck/arbor, you can remove it and replace the assembly with another combination of chuck and arbor that fits your needs. If the shank of the arbor is #2 Morse Taper, you can get one with whatever Jacobs taper end that will fit the chuck you prefer, be it #2 Jacobs Taper or whatever.

These arbors are available at most industrial suppliers, along with keyless chucks.

Speaking of keyless chucks, Albrecht is the premium brand, but expensive. I don't have a keyless, so I can't recommend a specific brand.

This is the answer I think Provincial. I'm probably going to need a 2MT to 2JT arbor. Then I'll buy the 2JT chuck that I want. I just need to verify that I truly have a 2MT in there now. Having trouble getting the arbor/chuck assembly out since I don't have a removal wedge tool, and I'm at risk of buying the wrong size wedge since I'm not sure it's a 2mt in there

Ok, final post, thanks everyone. I went with a made in the USA, new old stock Jacobs 14N / MT2 combo. I know I was going for something like 11N size and keyless, but I think the quality of the jaws in this 14N are going to be fine for holding some smaller bits. I feel like I learned a lot so mission accomplished! Merry Christmas everyone.
