Does anyone have a record of their tool inventory? How did you do this, include photos, prices, part numbers? With my ever growing collection I'm starting to get concerned and wonder if I should have some records to prove what I had should something terrible happen.

I started putting together a list using Excel, I've listed the tools by manufacturer, included part numbers, description, prices, and where I purchased the tool from. I am using a workbook page for each group of tools, sockets on one page, ratchet and accessories another page. I intended to photograph most if not all to help substantiate the value. I completed a listing of my plier collection, there are 56 different pliers and the value exceeded $1400. My screwdriver collection includes 168 drivers and exceeded $400.

It is a great idea, especially if you have insurance on your tool investment. Do exactly what you are doing, with pictures of course, and you will be golden.

It is time consuming, especially if you are trying to catch up to many years of having a tool addiction. But it will be worth it in the long run. It will also help you figure if something is missing, and if you really need that tool in the eBay auction.

i don't have prices but i do have pictures saved on my computer and on a CD.

I have most doucmented in pics. I thin when I went over the stash it was shocking. I buy mostly used, but new replacement was a around 50k-60k. My guess is I have about 10-15k into it all. That includes power tools and machine tools like the machine tools like my Bridgeport and similar floorstanding woodworking tools. I think pics are enough but shoud show the structure in the background to show they are in YOUR posession.

I have multiple records:

- a folder with equipment receipts (although this is less valuable since I began buying more stuff used)
- a spreadsheet with each eBay, Craigslist, or other purchase
- a separate spreadsheet for each eBay or Craigslist lot purchase (i.e. 60 sockets for only $15!), saved under the auction number
- I also save a copy of the eBay photo (only one, usually) and store it under the auction number.

Is this **** retentive? I won't blame anyone for calling that. However, I did the same thing with all my truck accessory purchases. When my truck was totalled early in 2008, I was able to get a much larger settlement from the insurance company. So, in my case, it has actually paid off, and I'd recommend doing the same for anyone else.

Not related to this thread, but I would also advise everyone to keep records of their maintenance, with mileage at the time it was performed. In my case, the battery was squished, and shorted out the permanent memory for the odometer. This was the only way I was able to establish my mileage.

Yep ad me to the list all my Snap On tools all brand new very scary to look at prices if i had to pay full truck price pics of everything for backup.

I do as well. I crated an Excel workbook with multiple spreadsheet that includes photos of the tools, part numbers and MSRP prices. Every new tool bought gets added to the spreadsheet/workbook in its proper category.


That reminds me, I need to ad the tools I got for Christmas to the list...

Store your info in multiple locations in case you lose the records or they're destroyed by fire, etc.
