Start looking for Athol, Prentiss, Rock Island, Reed, Hollands, Parker, early Craftsman, Wilton USA, Paramo. Woden, Yost...and maybe some other brands that I am forgetting right now

Brand new, the best you'll find for that price IMO is a Yost fsv-5. Though with some scouring, you may find an older, made in USA vise within that budget on ebay or craigslist.

how would i be able to tell what the early craftsman were?

Made in USA.
Althogh the ones made in the 70's in Japan are just as good quality IMHO.

If you have plenty of free time, browse the GJ vise pages. Over 2500 pages and 50,000+ posts.

Quite a few members like that particular vise. One thing most of them said was that as soon as you get it, take it apart to clean out metal filings and then properly lubricate the thing.

Mine had very few filings, and almost no "over-lube".

Someone can confirm, I think that is the Japanese version of that vise. I've had jap and USA and honestly couldn't tell any difference. It's a good vise. I'd try an offer first but at $128 after shipping that's not too bad.

It comes down to how much time you want to spend hunting. $87 after tax for the biggest box store **** vise is only s difference of $50 and well worth it imho if that were the comparison on the table. I'm sure you will find a better deal eventually but what's your time worth?

Fwiw I refurbished one of those and sold it locally for like $140 a couple years ago...

If that yost is the blue one, 503, are those three or five inch jaws? Not sure on their number system...

what was yours made out of it is hard to tell what this one is made out of i am betting a cast of some type or is it mainly a good steel vise?

There's some misunderstanding in that statement. The best vises are cast out of ductile iron, not made of steel.

I've found really good vises in the 4-5.5" jaw width range for anywhere from $50 to $150 so all it takes is a little patience. Most needed cosmetic attention, but were sound otherwise.
