Friend of mine sent me this pic.---Does anyone know the maker, or just how large it is?

I got that pic last night as well. To me it looks like a modified columbian. Here's a close up. You can see the original jaw towers. Looks like someone welded big steel plates to it to make those tall jaws.

I hate to do this...:(

But...

With this cadre of vise aficionados...

"Adult Supervision" is sometimes required...

The Craftsman 5222 that everyone is "OOOing" and "AHHHing" over does NOT have an "Octagonal" slide...The Latin root word for "Octagonal" is Octo, meaning eight....

Using my ancient eyes, I can only find six sides...:rolleyes2

That makes it "Hexagonal", from the Latin root word for six is "***", which, due to the "G" rating of the English language was Anglicized to "Hex"...Hence "Hexagonal" for a six sided figure or object...

One must be correct, mustn't one??? :tantrum2::bitchslap:evil:

Please make a note, to preclude this major faux pas from happening in the future....

(MacGee --- Can count, but I'm afraid some of you are lost balls in the high weeds...)

Meatsis, I think you have something there.---Looks like a professional job, probably a factory special order.
I wished I could enlarge the picture because the full pic shows that it is a hydraulic vise as well as a main screw.---Don't know how that would work.---Also in a wider pic, there is another, [looks like a 608] behind that one.---I could never find a URL to copy and paste to get the big pic.---If some of you fellows know how to do it, I will forward the email to you.---This needs to be seen in full view.

Here is a converted 608 to hydraulic from the early pages.---story on page 117, post 2335.---And somewhere back in the early pages is a 608 with smooth curved jaws.---I can't seem to find it.---Maybe some of the members remember where it is.

While digging through the pile I found this one made on the other side of the pond. CW see if Lakeside in Belgium shows up in your manufacturers book ?
I thought I would post it because it is another odd one I've never seen before.

did you ever find any info on that vise? I have been searching on here for an hour to no avail.

I just traded a cheap old Asian vise to a guy for the same little 3-1/2" Lakeside marked "Made in Belgium" (pre-WWII I presume). were these all Monkey Wards? it looks much higher quality casting than the other lakesides on here.

mine came with a pair of I think Copper pipe inserts. they fit on the square part over the screw under the jaws. the are loose and can be removed, so I am surprised both of them are still there. for a little machinist vice, it is in impeccable condition.

I never found anymore info on that one. The age is probably closer to WWI with a through the bench swivel mounting arrangement. I don't think they are related to the Ward / Lakeside vises. My vise has seen very use and is in great shape also. If there are only two of them they must be RARE :lol:

yeah that's the odd thing, if they aren't wards related, how'd they get here? well on 2nd thought, since we use to be one of the major tool and die places here in MIch, maybe someone emigrated with it.

I don't have the swivel, I don't think it ever had one. the ancient table it was bolted to didn't show much signs of it ever being there. glad I rescued it, guy was going to toss it thinking it was too small to use.

Whew, you almost had me thinking I forgot my geometry (720°). Eight sides would be that much harder to make. I wonder if the inside of the (sort of) static jaw was broached to get the nice tightly milled shape? They must have?

Can i have it?

Sure, what do I get?

Found this Milwaukee Morgan 88 today for $25 had one about 10 months ago, it was a Chicago Morgan so a bit older. This one needs pipe jaws unfortunately, they still sell them but they are not cheap they want $91.00 for them OUCH:rant:

I went to buy a 10" bench grinder tonight....came home with a Walworth vise(and a bench grinder). Has a replacement jaw, and it's missing the end on one of the handles, but it's otherwise really clean. I bet it's close to 60 pounds!

Also, he showed me this table used for clamping frames....when I looked underneith it, I saw that oh-so familiar name we all love:D He wants $50 for the table w/ power arm....I figure the power arm alone is worth that?

Also, he told me to make him an offer on a Hollands 14 1/2. It's real clean. Any thoughts on a reasonable offer for the Hollands?

That Hollands is a great vise, darn near the same in every way to Reeds, which are my favorites. I have a 4 in Hollands myself, great vise.

I'm not a great negotiator, but this seller needs to make you a package deal, you're making it easy on him. If you need a high end bench vise, you've found one, pay anything reasonable for it.

MISSILE - That Hollands at auction in these parts would go for 60-90 depending on the people bidding that day. If you are keeping it i wouldn't hesitate going a little higher.

Mac, the fact that you have it means that 95% of your problems are solved.---The clean-up is academic.---You can take 2 years to spruce it up.---Can't if you don't have it.;)---Nice catch.

EDIT-------- Up until say, the last 20 pages, those Octagon Craftsman's have gone practically unnoticed.---Now I am afraid you fellows have spooked the herd.---Now we won't be able to afford one.

Having 3 of them doesn't have me spooked at all, VA... LOL!
I bet you'll feel alright too, when the next one comes on the "market"!
The DOW might be at 20,000, but I'm not making these margins there!

Take care!

The weird thing is the others are marked as made in Japan, where that one has nothing anywhere. I took it apart and checked every inch...nothing. Still, it's made well and probably 80lbs, so I grabbed it. I hope Tim will put it to work soon

Wasn't me...

EDIT: I now remember that one though and I didn't bid due to the chipping around the base.

Zoomie,

In regards to your earlier post that you passed recently on a hex vise on eBay because the vise was chipped but I noticed on mine there is a void on the fixed base that does look like a chip missing when mounted but when taken apart you can see that it was part of the design. Not sure if that was what you were talking about?

Mac: yes i think that style of the so called mini 519x's was most likely made by Columbian. verdict is still out on who made the 519x's, but i'm still betting that Rock Island did even though Reed, Starrett and Columbian are in the mix.

i have a couple of those and they are well built aren't they?

ALL: i'm assigned to build a chair on casters for my handicapped daughter's wedding so any of you handy guys want to post up some thoughts over on my new thread feel free to or just give your support cause all i want from it is a kiss from my daughter and wife.

happy new year to all of you and another good year above dirt is about in the books. to a great year of vise (vice) hunting in 2017 and i hope to see a 200+ pound vise in person this year that isn't all welded up or broken.

Went back and negotiated a good deal on the Hollands 14 1/2 and the Barton's framing vise (with the Powerarm junior). I will get some pictures up once I return from the festivities this weekend :D

Wow I'm jealous of all you guys and your nice vices. Nothing like those EVER come up for sale in my area.

I have 4 (Made in England) Record vices around the shop and one Woden.

This 5 ton Posi Lock air over hydraulic vice (serial #002) sits on my 2000# welding bench until I can find a "nice" 100 plus pounder.

I thought the one I saw had extemporaneous chips around the base, not a uniformed groove, but I can't be sure, I'm working with an old brain, lol!

Found this Parker 204 recently.
Just finished the tear down, clean, and paint. Gotta love it when they still have the wrench! From a cabinet makers shop. Besides being caked with sawdust it has no huge hammer blows or grinder/file marks on the jaws.

Here is a Hollands "15" I found on CL. The seller lived in an apartment and didn't know what to do with it. At $60 I knew what to do with it! :)

I can't tell from the pic, but I have a model 93 that looks a bunch like that.
It's jaws measure 4-1/2" and are offset.

Just finished the restore on my flexi vise. I'm very impressed with the machining on the vise and if I could have a NOS stock vise it would be triple swivel version. I believe it to be from the 1950s and the paint I used was Plasti literally Chevrolet blue because I'm a Chevy man and the paint is pretty darn close to the original I found underneath two layers of old paint.

These ones are actually well built, the slide is nicely milled, the spindle screw has a brass or bronze sacrificing spacer, the spindle nut is easy to service and the backlash is good, the swivel base is solid and the jaws are nicely fitted and match up. Mine is a 506-51820: 3-1/2" jaw

No worries; When you told me, I got worried when I then looked at mine and was thinking the same thing when I saw the chips but it was just the relief built into the vise with a rough edge.Have no idea why did that.

Happy New Years to all of you as well. Cheers

THAT IS A PEACH!

Z3K3Y: I know its a pattern makers vise, but no clue on the model or size.

Rusty:

I'll bet it's a 4-1/2"
