What can I do with these bearings?

If I wanted to make a roller out of some 1 1/4", 1 1/2", and/or 1 5/8" tubing. I can get these bearings at fastenal. BEARING Will I be able to weld the inner and outer pieces without ruining the bearing as long as I get the metal seal? Also does fastenal sell just 2 or 4 of these instead of a case? Maybe you have a better idea!!!

I am sure there are persons able to weld them with junking the rest of the bearing. But that's not ideal for the reasons you suspect. Ideally, build something in which they can be serviced by a quick nut / bolt, or retainer clip.

The second column PN can be cross referenced broadly on the web for prices. Doubtful F-all is gonna be your best price.

No you cannot weld a bearing the races are hardened if you weld them they will anneal/warp and will wear very quick.

How about a friction fit with a snap ring retainer?

You'd need to use spacers and collars to locate them. You can grind the outer edge to engage a set screw to keep the race from spinning if you're careful not to heat it up.

I want to make a roller like this. Not like I need 100 of them. I just want to build one or two that I can use on a bench top.

Some how I ended up with some shop made conveyor rollers for a job at work. They used some acetal sleeve bearings that slipped into 2 " pipe. They are available for pipe and tubing. Not cheap but they make the job easy.

HF used to sell a single roller with a green bracket for mounting directly on a bench for like $5. I had a couple at one time but don't know what I did with them. I don't see it on their site any longer but rockler still sells them at 5x the price.

They make specific bearings for conveyor rollers. They are just driven in and have a stop flange.

In most cases the entire roller can be bought for less than the cost of the bearings alone, unless you are buying thousands of bearings at time.

If we're talking practical, you have to decide what your time is worth. Fastenal is certainly not the most economical bearing source. Even Bearing Headquartes will beat them, and for this light duty intermittent application, I'd go with the cheapest supplier on evilBay. For mounting the bearings, Loctite Stud & Bearing Mount (it has a different name now) should work fine. Still, unless the size of the roller is critical, you can barely beat the ready made rollers from Amazon above.

If you want to make your own just for the sake of the project, hey, go for it. I've certainly done wildly impractical things just because I wanted to!

Buy the aforementioned roller on Amazon, remove a bearing and the shaft from one end, cut the roller and shaft to length, then reinstall the bearing. These rollers and bearings are really easy to work with.

Did you mean the INSIDE diameter of the tube? If the ID of the tube is the same as the OD of the bearing it won't be a press fit, but you can glue them in with a Loctite made for the purpose. Used to be named Bearing and Stud Mount- I think it's still made but the name has changed.
Orrrrr---- since you're ordering bearings anyway, order a bearing that's .01 or so bigger than the ID of the tube.

Or, if you really did mean the OD of the tube and bearing are the same, I can't think of a practical way to make it work. Again, order bearings the right size for a press fit inside the tube.

If you were wanting to press the bearings on the inside of the tube, it will need to be machined on a lathe to allow press fitting, tubing ID tolerance (even DOM) is not tight enough to allow press fit of bearings.

Also you want a bearing that is .001 larger than the ID, not .010, ten thousands will not press fit without breaking the bearing.

The link that Advan posted for the ENTIRE roller already assembled (including bearings) is only $10.04 each for a 25mm x 300mm roller. Again, you can't begin to make these your self for that kind of money.

For a single roller; mount a half dozen lawnmower wheels on a single axle.

Those conveyor sections? I was given two sections of them a couple years ago. Shouldn't be too hard to hunt some of them up locally.

Need a specific bearing size; call your local bearing supplier.

Like others have mentioned; don't weld on bearings/

The ready made roller tubes mentioned would trump buying bearings and material.
