Husky 66" Tool Chest

My wife asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, Coming up in a few weeks. I out grew my craftsman boxes and needed something a bit larger. I was looking at the HF 72" chest and I wasn't a fan of the split top drawer design. Checked out HD and found this for, half the price. Yes it's 66" and not 72" but my god, now that it's been delivered and I have ALL of my tools in it (with 2 empty drawers waiting for more tools) I am incredibly happy I chose this one! Single top drawer is the way to go!

Here's my personal pictures of it, The top drawer fit all of my sockets, wrenches, special tools, and more with ease! At this point I'm going to have to search for things to buy as I already have a decent assortment of tools.

If anyone has any questions I'll answer to the best of my knowledge. I opted for the free shipping to store and the pallet this was delivered on was set wide so they couldn't simply lift this with a forklift into my truck, It took 3 employees plus myself to load it into my bed and the same amount to unload, wasn't bad at all.

I stopped in to Home Depot yesterday and was thoroughly impressed with their toolbox selection. The upper-level Husky boxes were 22" deep and they had Extreme boxes on display. I just wish Husky used heavier duty drawer slides.

Not at all, this fells much sturdier than anything they have in store. I called the 800 number before ordering and he said they don't carry this specific one in any store (stupid because they would sell like hot cakes)

I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I was sold on the depth, if I remember correctly this is deeper than the HF chest and IMO sturdier.

From what I saw from the OP's link, all drawers are single slide.

The weight capacity per drawer for the slides on that style box (21ga gloss black w/ chrome handles like this 66") is 100 lbs. It'd pretty easy to overload that top big drawer.

Their newer style Husky boxes (20ga matte black - all black) have slides with a 125lb weight capacity. Still could overload that drawer pretty easy but it is better.

Even if the slides are handling it some have found the bottoms of their big drawers on the Huskys can sag after time making them hard to open / scrape / etc. There was just a recent thread about that.

The HF boxes are a much thicker 14ga I believe. their boxes definitely aren't as deep but are a lot heavier.

All that said, I have had my eyes on the new style Husky 52" chest combo. Once I get through these dang holidays I'm going to be saving for one.

Single slide for sure was just out there. It's not the best thing ever but IMO it's the best chest on the market for a 66" for 600$.

Looks good. There's a video on YouTube reviewing that box & the guy has it about as full as possible. I would think it has to be pretty decent to not fall apart when he opened some of the drawers.

I have a couple of the newer Husky tool chest combo offerings, the 52 inch and the 41 inch. Both, though not near tool truck quality, have been fine for this DIY'er for the last couple of years.

The HF boxes are 20ga. I have a 56" top and bottom. They are great boxes. I bought a Husky 41" with the wood top for my nine year old that he uses for his tools and RC car parts. I think it is a great box for the money. Husky has some decent boxes for the homeowner. Way better than the Kobalts IMHO. I was thinking of getting another HF 56" but the OP's box is pretty tempting since I like the drawer layout better. Congrats on an excellent purchase.

So, the Husky 52" combo chest is 16% longer and 10% deeper (and 4" taller but I suspect the height difference is mostly empty space on the Husky with the higher top shelf clearance) than the 44" HF but weighs essentially the same.

Of course this isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. A couple things I notice that would factor into the weight either way is that the HF boxes have more drawers and the Husky has an extra pair of casters. Regardless, from what I can gather it still seems pretty likely to me that the HF boxes are made of a heavier gauge than the Huskys are.

All that said, I'm still looking hard at getting one of these new Husky boxes. I'm really impressed with it and it will be a MUCH better fit for the tools I need to store than any of the HF ones. I just got to get through the holidays first.

Whoever says the HF Toolboxes are 14ga are seriously misinformed. I used an older micrometer to check the gauge a few years back and it was 3/64 of an inch which is somewhere between 18 and 20 gage. I can get a much more accurate one from work tomorrow for a definitive answer. I know it is not 14ga. I have three Lyons cabinets that are 14ga and a 12ga Strong Hold. My HF box is nowhere near this in thickness.

I was going to order the HF 56 but i really think this is a better deal. i was not able to put hands on one because they dont carry them in my store but you seem to be happy with the setup so this should fit me well. You will not be disappointed. Its my primary tool storage at my home garage and I love it. I think you'll be surprised with how nice it actually is. The long top drawer is amazing.

And I don't know why the "whoever says" in your post. I quoted and linked to exactly who said it in my post above. Jeff G. Holt in a May 2013 "Used and Abused" review column in Hot Bike magazine said the HF was 14 gauge, Jacob Jackson of Truckin’ magazine in another review said the HF was 14 gauge, and GeorgeFromPa here at GJ said the HF is 14 ga. Weighing those against yours has me wondering who is it who is "seriously misinformed". It does seem that someone is.

I was just going by what those others had said and that it makes sense to me that the Harbor Freight box is made of a thicker gauge steel as the 44" wide 18" deep HF box (no gauge listed at HF) top & bottom combo weighs the same as a Husky 52" wide 20" deep combo box (listed as 20 ga at HD) that has ~25% larger dimensions overall. I've also checked them out myself personally going back and forth - my local Harbor Freight is 2 blocks from the Home Depot - and I did not ever get the impression that the Husky boxes are as thick gauge steel as the HFs just by feel for whatever that's worth.

I also pointed out that even given that thought I personally do prefer the Husky boxes, or at least the newer thicker gauge all black textured Husky boxes with the improved capacity soft-close drawer slides, over the Harbor Freight boxes, but that's just me, and that's mostly based on the value of the extra storage capacity for the buck, and the nicer drawer slides, and I don't like the HF's crappy plastic latches that are prone to breaking, plus I just much prefer the black to the red. lol

I just got 2 of these to make a workbench out of. This model is listed as 19 gauge and its pretty beefy. My buddy got the one in the OP and I believe its 20 gauge. It is slightly noticeable between the two. It seems to be a great bang for your buck.

Its 24 inches deep. I just cant stand 18 inch tool boxes any longer.

14 ga. Mics out to .074.
I think my Lista is 18ga., while it weighs 650 lbs. empty. Harbor freight boxes are not made from 14 ga. Steel, or my machine shop would have replaced all the vidmars and listas with them. A comparable snap on weighs about 60% of my own. I was just at the pawn shop looking at a bunch of brand new snap on boxes.

I have this same 66" toolbox that I purchased back towards the end of June. I went out to the shop and checked; single slides on top drawer one on each side, plus a slide on the bottom in the middle. It has been a great purchase. Only complaint from me about it is the chintzy plastic foldable key. The blank number that you need to get a copy made is an ilco 1620.

HF is 18ga at best.
Husky is 20ga which can work if rolled well and strengthening ribs added, big drawer ideally needed 18ga and bottom ribs added plus dual slides and dual slides on all deep drawers too. Like drawer layout on 66" Husky and that big factor on what you choose at end of day . At the price it not a bad buy and sensibly loaded will last ages so you get moneys worth from them . Is lot of box for that budget, if want heavier gauge you either got look at used truck brand or strictly toolbox offerings and bigger budget .

Think older husky styling far nicer than new all black. Should of kept trimming for handles .
Is a great home box. Plenty people use these in trade situations and they can hold up quite well in right hands .

HF makes great diy tool boxes but may be close to 14ga because of the thick paint. The metal drawers have folds and ridges for stiffness but they still flex like some imported brands at that pricepoint.
Husky has improved their tool box lineup every year. I could see owning one of the bigger ones (24" deep) one day.
