I don't call that lazy...I call it thinking smart...maybe that's just me though....I do have my whole house wired as a smart house. Yup, lights, fans, a/c vents, blinds, locks, garage doors, sprinkler system, security system, and HVAC is all controlled from my phone.

What I did today was ponder a present from a neighbor.
USMC 1944 date code Conco Jerry cans.
A pair of them.

They were to be cut up and light shades/sconces made from them, but the 1944 date code is too historic for that.

I'm thinking ANOTHER glass top table using these for legs, one upright and the other upside down so the date code shows.

I have no need for a cocktail table.
Please help me come up with a better, nondestructive idea for these.

I'm not sure the gifter would understand me giving them away to someone who needs them for a display.

I'm considering cleaning them up and using them, but I use boat type six gallon tanks on my offroader and would have to reconfigure all kinds of **** to use these.
.

I'd love to take an old jerry can, cut it apart and turn it into a tool box. However, those being 1944 USMC cans, would be somewhat sacrilegious.

I'd probably try to make a make or modify a mount to hang them on a wall.

Worked on a Kawasaki Ninja. If you want to know why repair bills are so high, thank the designer. I replaced pods with a OE air box and had to take the bike about 80% apart to get the air box into the stock location. It was almost as bad as replacing a gas tank in a Goldwing.

John

"Historic" only fits if you knew the story behind them.. Lots of cool uses-primarily as liquid carrying containers.. however-if they're heavily rusted inside--then make what you wish. How many thousands of these were produced and used.. cut the face of the X out and build a really unique shadow box.?

I was given an estimate of $35,000 to do the upholstery in my car project. The seats are in Black water buffalo and I wanted the upholstery to match. My first trade was sheetmetal and I thought sheet leather cannot be as difficult, All I needed was a sewing machine with a walking foot for leather. A local upholstery shop was down-sizing and I bought their JUKI 562 and the table it was mounted on.
Rather than paying out $35k, my total cost including $500 for the sewing machine was about $4K. I sewed leather binding around the many pieces of wool carpet for the interior and the trunk. It all fits and looks really well. So, what did I do today? I treated the leather upholstery the driver's seat.

Very nice! And you have developed a new skill. Where did you get the info on how to get started sewing upholstery?

The guy who sold me the JUKi machine answered a very few questions, You Tube has some great how - to videos, l looked at some finished upholstery and I boldly went where I had never been before. I made a test /practice panel first
I bought the leather at Tandy and the scrim back foam padding at The Foam Shop
I got little or no cooperation from local upholstery trade suppliers so I went online, saved money and got what I wanted for supplies. I have two more upcoming upholstery jobs to do, now.

tried starting the exploder with a jumper pack. total fail. Been sitting for 3 weeks in sub zero weather covered in snow.
Put the charger on it for 2 hours and fired right up. Not to bad for a POS with 313K miles on it.

I just went to the store and bought the led bulbs. No wiring changes required, just take the old t-8's out and put in the leds. The bulbs were 6.97 each or 5.92 each in a pack of 10. :rocker:

Some prefer eliminating or bypassing the ballast. Ballasts will eventually fail and need to be replaced. They also use a few watts of electricity. So by eliminating them, you have a more reliable and efficient light.

I just ordered an LED tube that can be used with or without a ballast. I'm slowly converting to LED as my fluorescent tubes burn out, so I need tubes that work with a ballast as I mix them with fluorescent tubes in the same fixture. But once I'm 100% LED, I can eliminate the ballasts and continue to use the same bulbs.

Built a new desk for moving the business into the garage. I had some old brackets made of channel and some unistrut. Reused the bowling alley chunk that I used in Napa. I 45ed the exposed unistut to save on ramming my knees on the ends.

:rocker:

This type of thing is what I dig about this place. Welding Unistrut instead of the typical bolt together stuff. I love overkill!

Great and strong. You probably already are, but cap those vertical metal ends or you will be losing a lot of skin when you slide inder there!
