Lin and Dave,
I haven't posted on your thread before, but I've been following along for some time! Your craftsmanship is truly an inspiration and it's been a real education to see and read what you have built and shared. I've told and showed many people about your build!

If nothing else you need to try to back up your photos to a personal drive somewhere. Any idea how many gigs of photos and other files you have on Go Daddy? Is that why they are charging you more? I guess the reason doesn't matter.

FWIW, I've used Hostupon (www.hostupon.com) for several years and they have always provided great service. Their basic plan with unlimited storage and bandwidth is just $3.95 per month. And if you start a new plan there they will transfer your existing site free of charge. Doing that may even preserve the links to all of your photos and content since most of the links are url based, and not dependent on IP. You'd probably have to talk to them directly though. During the day you can start a chat with one of their tech people right on the main page of their website.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!
Thanks Slim
I will check out the link to hostupon.
As I said before , I do have all of the pictures on two computers as well as a backup external hard drive.
Whether I move the web site or post the pictures to a photo host , I will have to edit the link on every picture on the journal here.

Not sure of the total size of the web site , estimate 2gb +or- but they did not use that for a reason to increase. It was just stated in an email that they have increased their rates. I have never been notified of using too much disk space or bandwidth.

What really is upsetting to me is , I use to run the computer. Now the computer is running me. Next week I will turn 77. Why am I spending so much of my time trying to keep up with all the changes that windows or some other internet genius thinks that his new way of doing it is going to save the world. Seriously I don't have that much time left to allot to it. Then when , if your lucky, you get it all set up MS will come up with Win 11 automatic update that will remove all of your permissions to your apps and everthing else you short life depends on.
Anyway
Thanks again Slim and I will keep searching a resolution.

Dave

Absolutely stunning barn build. I'm a long time lurker and don't post much but absolutely had to comment on your build. Extremely well built and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the build. Take Care

Thanks again for the help. I have secured a new domain , with hopes that sometime during the winter months of reworking the web site, meanwhile , we decided to bite the bullet and pay Go Daddy the $121.00. Mainly because we were running out of time to transfer and replace all the links required to go to the new URL.
Didn't make us happy, but it was the best option we had.

Sometimes that's the easiest solution and I think that is what they are counting on - that you don't want to do all the work to move your stuff.

And I know what you mean about your computers running you! Been working with computers since before the first PC's were invented back in the 80's.

Keep up the good work!

Cheers!

This is an incredible build. I just finished reading the whole thread, and saw one post that said you would like to use the 2 wire and insulator type wiring.
You are correct that the insurance people would have hissy fits.
That style of wiring is called knob and tube. Knob is the white ceramic insulator nailed on surface to carry the wire. Tube is the ceramic piece used to pass wire through wooden members. On open framing it looks very artsy fartsy, and way cool.
A way to have the knob and tube is to install it and not use it.
Hide the modern wiring, switches and receptacles and connect it for use.
The knob and tube is seen but stopped short of lighting, receptacles and panels that will be used.
All of the parts, pieces, switches and receptacles are available.

That's a neat idea. Right off the top without looking into it further, I think I would do the live wiring first and concealing it as I went along. Then run the knob and tube to make it look like it was doing the job.
Took a lot of that wiring out of old houses back when I was a kid growing up in New England. Should have kept some of it. Like a lot of other things.
Grew up in a family of electricians. Mom was always finding a house she had to have and fix up. She would say, the boys can do that (4 brothers and me).

Thanks for the input. If we don't use it there may be others that will. If so , let us know on here, please.

From a safety standpoint, there is nothing inherently wrong with knob and tube wiring. It has two shortcomings; the absence of a grounding connector and it is labor intensive to install. While obsolete, it can be left in place during renovations if it is in good working order. That said, I have only run into it on a couple of occasions and it had already been retired in favor of more modern cable. I can't imagine using it today.

As I remember it , the insulation on the wire was not very good. Mice seemed to like it tho.
Another way to add to the thoughts here would be to use low voltage LED for the lighting and expose the wires that are seen in the roof (ceiling) just for the lights. It could be made to look like knob and tube. The rest of the wiring for wall outlets etc. could be hidden and conventional.

As an apprentice in the mid 70's. One of the first jobs I went on, with a journeyman in charge, was to inspect an older house with K&T wiring. An inspection of the uninsulated attic and crawl space showed the wiring had been installed well and had not been compromised. Yes, wiring insulation was missing in quite a few spots, but that does not qualify as a danger. We were to replace existing devices with new. When we removed the devices we found 2 wires hanging free with no electrical boxes installed. Devices were screwed directly into the lath and plaster walls.
Because of the age of the wire, on close inspection we couldn't tell which was hot {black} or neutral {white}. The old fart journeyman took all this in stride. He pulled out an inexpensive neon voltage tester. With the power on throughout the house, he told me to hold one probe of the tester and with the other probe touch each wire at a device. The wire that made the tester neon bulb glow was hot. The neon bulb did not pass enough electric through it for me to feel.
Today 40 years later I drive past that house on my way into town. Still looks the same on the outside. I sure would like to find out if our upgrade is still intact.

Spent a week again , late November , in the hospital. Than another week doing tests and stuff.
Feeling pretty good now, but hard to recoup in this weather. 12* here this morning.
Not great for getting out and doing stuff.
Stop in and say Hi, when you get here.

In the sense that it is not finished, then , yes, but we have not ben able to do much in the last six plus months.
Need to finish the extension and put on the doors. That would be the main items to do. But then there is always more.
Hell to get old and not be able to do what you now have time for.
Thanks for looking and asking.

Hi, I was hoping you and Lin are doing well, it's been quite a while since we've heard from you. How are things? Love your barn and the ingenuity shown to build it. Take care,

Thanks for the interest.
Just sitting in the heat and getting older.
Was hoping to get some stuff done this summer, but heat here has done a number on us this year. Spring was cold and lots of rain, and now we are paying for it.
Barn has held up good. Made it thru some very strong thunder storms and high winds.
I go on GJ almost every day, mainly to be sure my computer stays locked on and I don't have to log in. Guess that is why it shows activity. Thanks to you all, hope everyone has had a bang up forth.

It's noon and already it has been a three t-shirt day. All that I have done is look at the lawn and get the mail. Mailbox is 50ft from the house!

That would put you about in Clinton. I had been in Benton since about 1969. About three years ago I move to Crawfordsville about 12 miles out of W. Memphis. My wife and I both grew up in Harrison and have a second home in Cotter on the White River. Would love to stop by sometime and see the barn. Looks great. ARFLY on here is in Pea Ridge.

Monday here was sweet compared to what we have had for weather lately and I was just riding my motorcycle up through Clinton to Norfork Lake/Calico Rock area. I've been meaning to stop by for quite awhile.
