Am I too honest?

Found a $100 bill amongst the tools on the Snap-on truck this morning. It was in the back of the truck, and most customers don't make it that far without emptying their pockets in payments, so I figured it was the dealers. So I pointed it out and he gave me $20 because he realized anyone else would have walked off w/ it.........

Also, i'm working in a new location, new dealer, and I want him to like me.......

If it was the dealers, it was the right thing to do. If it really wasn't the dealer's and you have no way of really finding out, it was still the right thing to do.

I'd rather have a clear conscience and not have to worry about what some people like to call 'bad karma'.

Im sure there is lots of members here who are put in similar sitsuations daily, I would think a Auto mechanic could fleece people out of there money fairly quickley if they wanted. I know i have people come into my shop fairly often complaing about ther jack wont work etc, and alot of times its something really simple like the Pump cup is broken etc.. Now i could keep the jack for a couple days pretend like i worked real hard and charge them full price or i could pull the pump out, Slap on a new $5 cup charge them the mininum and let them be on there way. Hmm what to do? I learned along time ago that treating someone honest and fair will come back to benefit you down the road in maybe a future sale or word of mouth business.

Ditto that man.. I never did understand people who thought petty thievery made any sense. Yeah you get $100-200 or something.. but is it worth your rep, job, etc? Nah..


Kudos to you Olds88 for doing the right thing. Not to mention I'm sure you'll flip that $20 back his way pretty soon. Sounds like a good dealer and a good guy to offer you any sort of "reward" for being honest and doing the right thing. Just a testament to most of the folks on this board. I think most of the folks here seem like good quality folks cut from good cloth and occasionally you guys reaffirm that.

Yeah, he did, but it's a vehicle open to the public... anyone besides the dealer could have dropped it there. No way to know.

Interesting thought expressed earlier about it being a "test". Might be worthwhile to get a picture of who your clients are in a new area. Spend time and effort with the honest ones, leave the crooks to rot. Sounds like the OP passed the "test", however it was planned out (dealer, Great Maker, etc).

That makes me wonder. Is theft a major issue for you? Have you ever caught anyone in the act of stealing from you and what action did you take?

My wife and grandkids found $400 in a change purse in a Taco Smell a year ago. The grandkids thought they were rich. My wife asked at the counter if it had been reported lost. No one had. When the counter people found out how much it was everyone was ready to hold on to it. My wife got the manager and left our phone numbers with them and aksed them to post a note that it would be turned in to the police lost and found.
She went back later that day and put a note on the bulliten board and turned it in.
The grandkids and the counter people were pissed they didn't get the money, but it was the right thing to do.

Installed a new radiator in a 91 Lebaron today. I had some free time today and noticed their headlight doors were stuck open. Took the motor out, took the cover off the transmission and cleaned out the old chipped plastic and did the old 3 nuts trick (famous on 80s-90s Ford power window motors). Customer was thrilled the headlight doors worked for the first time in years at no charge. Cost me 3 nuts from my junk drawer.

It is not a major issue but it is an issue. I noticed several individual sockets missing from sets when I changed trucks a couple of weeks ago. I have had to move several smaller items to keep them from walking off. I take into account sticky fingers when I decide where to display something. I have never caught someone stealing and I am not sure how I would handle it if and when I do. I lose more from people just skipping out on their bill than I do from shoplifting.

It's better to have a game plan prior to needing it. You are more likely to stick to your game plan. Also, the game plan will have rational thought applied (hopefully) whereas spur of the moment decisions have more emotion that long range thought.

Couple weeks ago I was at a pizza place I order from every once in awhile to pick up some food. While I was waiting, I noticed there was a $20 bill sitting right next to the register that would've been easy for someone to do a quick reach over and pocket, and I mentioned it to the woman behind the counter. When cash is sitting around unattended, it sticks out to me.

Good to see there are alot of honest people left in the world. Us mechanics get a bad rap for being dishonest, but it just isn't the case. Sure there are dishonest ones, but the honest will out number them every time. Kudos to you Olds, like eveyone else here I would have turned it in as well.

They way I look at it is, its found on his truck so it belongs to the dealer. What if you had found a shiny new Mac Ratchet back there would it of gone into your pocket because since the dealer only sells SO it must of fell out of some costumers pocket? The karma will come back to you maybe a discount on future tools
