I thought it would be funny to see everyone's personal definition of a tool polisher. Let's be nice and keep certain members name's/picture's out of the definition please.

Tool Polisher - (Noun, Adjective) 1: A person who buys top of the line tools with the intentions of using them to make a repair, but then realizes its too difficult of a job and pays someone to do it.
2: This person also regularly stares at said tools into the late hours of the night, polishing and rearranging them in tool box.
3: This person also pulls out 14 different tools to replace a tailight bulb, then returns to number 2.

I believe we found a winner
The PROBLEM, in my opinion, develops when said collectors of tools...who have no real applicable knowledge in their use start to throw around their very aggressive opinions on brands, usage, and how to go about accomplishing a task with said collected tools. That's the part that irks me the most with "tool polishers."

Are you describing a fluffer or someone who actually takes time to keep their tools clean?

Someone who buys tools and never uses them.

They buy tools just "to have" them. They treat and looks at tools like jewelry; polishes them to a shine, organizes them so they look good in pictures and then lets them sit and collect dust, never to be touched again. And then they tell people how great they are.

The thread about the scratched gearwrench 120xp ratchets...i remember an older thread about someone returning brand new Snap-on ratchets because they had light scratches...the person who posted about the "awful" set of SK combo wrenches they had just received...guys that brag about how nice Koken tools are, then have a photo shoot with single sockets...the people who are so bitter about SK qc, which mostly seems to stem from leftover stock from their bankruptcy, not indicative of them as a company now.

All kinds of tool related mental disorders I had no idea existed til I came to GJ.

A person who don't use his tools, they are just sitting in his box looking pretty. Never a use mark or dirty.

Same as a Rubby in the motorcycle world.

i'm in the tool abuser club.

i'll sacrifice the tool to get the job done.

nearly every tool i own has had a pipe/extension on it at some time or another, or has hammer marks on it.
99% of my "working tools" were purchased brand new off a tool truck.

i but tools on an as needed basis, i dont have anything thats never been used.

Am I a tool polisher if I wipe down my cordless/air tools with simple green before I put them away or the handles of the tools I used on the job?

I could be considered a very light tool polisher...being that I use my tools hard but never put them away wet. There are no comfort grips with oil on them, I clean the inside of my sockets, wipe down every tool I use with LAs Totally Awesome Cleaner etc.

Some friends think I'm wasting my time doing that but it makes me feel better

I guess I am the tool abuser. If a wrench is too long to fit into a tight space then I get out the sawzall. Screwdriver have a chip then grind sides and tip to become a caning spline removal chisel.

What about someone who comments on this thread to try and disguise the fact they are themselves a polisher, but we all know they are.

Do you all worry about the chemicals corroding the plastic/metal when you use simple green or la's totally awesome and leave it on when you put tools away?

I've been using LA on my SO and Pittsburgh comfort grips for about 2 years and no discernable damage. Granted I use it sparingly, not soaking it.

It is always a good idea to wipe down tools before putting them away. I was checking my oil before a trip recently and I had to use a funnel to add some oil additive to the engine. On this engine wires and hoses are in the way for a nice easy pour and the funnel helps push them to the side. While pouring holding a light, I notice something fall down into the funnel. Some small chunks of metal fell into the funnel.

I thought to myself I did not wipe down my light after the last time I used it, which was obvious because of the metal falling into the funnel. So sometimes those little things matter. The oil additive was cold and thick so I already had a papertowel in my hand from checking the oil, so it was easy to grab the chunks with the papertowel.

I thought about how some people on here do not wipe down their tools. I thought that I would post this as a good reason to do it.

The metal was steel from an exhaust pipe, that I totally made into something else that was flat. I have used that light several times since then too, it just happened to be when they fell off, I guess.

I will put some rags on my boxes, for the purpose of wipe down before putting away from now on.

I guess I'm a tool abuser. There is missing chrome on numerous wrenches/sockets, beat up handles from hammers and cheater bars. They all get wiped up at the end of the job but my tool box def. does not look like it belongs in a photo shoot. I use them to make a living and they look the part.

I reckon anyone with average of over 1 post a day on the 'general tools forum' is walking a very fine line indeed.
FWIW Ive seen a DIY guy do an complete engine rebuild in his driveway with a small toolbox of hand-tools. no tool is perfect, its all about completing the work.

^These

And anyone who thinks 1 brand of tools is the best for every application, only buys one brand of tools and boasts about it all the time while putting down brands they've never tried.

^^^This^^^

I get having a different amount of ratchets because you have swivel heads, flex heads and just a regular ratchet but come on, how many of each do you need?

That said...To each their own, and I have certainly learned and seen a lot of ratchets I would have never known about because of those giant collections. I love looking at them. However at some point it's a display/collection not just what you need to get the job done. That to me constitutes a tool polisher, and there's nothing wrong with it if that's your thing.

My Dad was that guy...literally. He's rebuilt more than 1 engine with his Great Neck socket set from Autozone and a couple of Ace Professional ratchets. The ratchets break every few years and he exchanges it for a new one.

What I've learned from his is you can do almost anything with a minimal amount of tools, but it's often much easier if you have the right tools for the job.
