Price check on a craftsman table saw

I have a craftsman table saw from the 80's. It was my dad's and was given to me 15 years ago. It's a cast iron contractor saw with a mobile base and an upgraded delta fence system (biesemeyer style). Cuts great and is quiet with the link belt v belt. But It takes up a lot of room. I've just bought a new bosch table saw and need to sell this one. What's a fair asking price? I do need to do a good cleaning on it first but here it is.

Depends on where you are, and the market there. Around here, I see asking prices for between $50 and $150, and there's a glut of them on the market. I bought one in great shape for $50 recently to use as a jobsite saw. My goal is to resell it for $50 when I'm done with it; it's a convenience to have it permanently set up on the job, and low risk of theft for a Craftsman saw.

I agree with Dave. These are all over CL here in the Pacific NW. The value of these over-rated (HP rating, that is) Craftsman saws will vary depending on where you live. It's not a bad saw but $150 seems at the high end of value to me, but that might be accurate with the added fence.

Around my parts there's not a lot offered on CL but there is the occasional table saw similar to yours, and they do typically list for $250-300 though I don't usually see them disappear very fast at that price unless they look pristine. Around here contractor saws like yours with the outboard motor do sell easier & fetch a bit more than the cheaper-newer more plastic kind with the motor under the table. The latter sometimes never sell even for prices a lot less. If that's a working moveable base that's another good selling point in addition to the fence upgrade. Same goes for the link belt.

If I were to sell it after a clean up I'd probably ask $250 and be willing to take a little less.

I shopped daily for almost 2 years on CL for a used TS in good shape within a couple hrs drive - I was looking more for a cabinet style saw though which I saw none to be had - before I just gave up and took the trip last year to a Grizzly tent sale in Springfield and bought a new one.

That is a top of the line saw and with the fence I would start asking that $250-$300. You might ony get $200, and it will take time to find the right buyer, but that would be a good deal for them.

It would help to know where you are so anyone in the same region could help you in what to expect.

Must be a regional thing. Up here, no Craftsman would bring $300.

Now, yours is nice, solid saw, has the Delta fence, has extensions and the link belt, but still not what gets out the big bucks here.

To me seems like sweet spot price would be in the $150 to $250 range given that OP is in central WV. High rent areas like San Fran, Seattle or NYC might be more, but normal areas you won't sell it for $300 or more.

That's just like the one I had that burned up in my shop. It's a good one. I bought a new POS Craftsman for around $150-$200, I'd give that for it.

Where are you located?

Here in the metro NYC area this is a $50-150 dollar saw. Older population around here and plenty of grandpas had this saw. Their sons and especially their grandsons typically have never used such a tool.

That is a reasonable saw but the upgraded V belt as well as the upgraded Biesemeyer type fence was an expensive upgraded. Hard to say what you will actually get for it but if I were in the market for a first saw I would give you 250 for it in a heartbeat

I agree. The saw was free to me from my dad a long time ago. So it was worth the upgrades at the time, and still is I guess.

I have more questions than answers.
You might do better putting the old fence on and offer them separate. The fence is worth as much or more than the saw. The V belt will bring pennies on the dollar so I would put the old belt on and use the V on something else.

If someone wanted everything you can do a package deal and get more??

Nice upgrades

As mentioned, I'm for selling the fence separately. The fence is probably worth in so. FL what the saw would sell-for. The link belt & the fence could be offered apart from the stock stuff, as was mentioned, as an upgrade to whoever comes to see the basic-equipped saw.

A HVAC contractor friend of mine has a Craftsman table saw probably very similar to that, BNIB, never opened. He's in Wellington FL-Palm Beach County. I just talked to him about selling it, he's trying to clear out his garage. He has been collecting parts for two ironhead Sportsters he has, a '70 and a '76. The '70 I keep trying to get him to put a boatail rear fender/seat on it, though it didn't come stock w/one. Most people didn't like the Sportster w/that or the slightly-newer big twin that got the same styling (Superglide), but I like 'em. If he sold the table saw, one less thing on the shelf, more $ for parts for his H-D hobby. He also has an 80 cu.in. '80 Lowrider he bought new and still rides.

So I vote to sell the accessories separately, assuming you have the OEM fence. From seeing the asking prices in south FL craigslist, table saws/contractor saws sell for > radial arm saws (RAS). I just sold a perfectly-operating Craftsman RAS manufactured circa 1969, steel/iron, not aluminum, for $75, with an elderly Delta (Milwaukee) drill press DP220, that went for $90, also no issues.

The oem fence was a big POS. It was trashed a long time ago and if memory serves me the back stop was broke.

I paid $50 for mine. It has the wing extensions, but is still sporting the original fence and standard belt. They were asking $100 for it at an estate sale.

All that said, with the upgrades, to the right buyer, $200 is a fair price v

OP, as you said, clean it up, wax the top and fence, maybe a little

That's a good Idea OP, do you have the old fence?
take $100.00 for the saw with the OEM fence,
Take $100.00 for the fence!!

Nice upgrades

Hopefully, The Key is the Right BUYER!!!
I paid $100.00 for a circa 1969 Delta Belt sander, had about another $100.00 in it for bearings, paint, and my labor (Of Love)
Right buyer came along , paid $400.00, no haggle,
(Nice guy, His wife was nice too, She didn't *****, and say, "Don't you have one of those"
Or "I don't get it" She supported his hobbies, He supported her hobbies).

I have pretty much the same saw at work---paid $60 for it. Added a similar fence ($10 at garage sale) and upgraded belt & pulleys (I went with poly-V). So about $100 total investment. I'd be thrilled with getting my money back when I sell it: Not a fan of the tilt mechanism.

Your saw is in better shape, and has a mobile base which I really like. I'd value it at an easy $200 in the Chicago area. Maybe more depending on your location.

I have a theory - which is probably not worth its weight it sh*t, but here goes ...

Regarding the cost of table saws, et al, here in the Pacific NW:

Out west - especially here in the Pacific NW - there has been huge population growth over the past 30 years. Along with population growth comes lots and lots of building.

I wish I could document (with pictures) the changes I have seen in Portland. When I was in HS (30+ years ago) the Portland/metro area had roughly 500,000 people. Now it exceeds 2.5 million.

Anyways, with lots of building, comes lots and lots of building tools. CL is flooded with saws of every type. There are table saws and radial arm saws at nearly every thrift store I visit (there are currently 5 radial arm saws at the Habitat for Humanity thrift store, ReStore, in Salem, Oregon) that can be had for $25-$40/ea. These saws are as abundant here as vises are in the rust belt.

So there's my theory.

I wish the OP the best of luck with your sale!
