First off, before I forget, I'd like to thank Chad S publicly for answering the questions I PM'd him.
If you're ever in my neck of the woods, Chad, the
is definitely on me.
It's an old Snap-on K-60. Rough shape, but nothing's missing and for $300 including some tools, I think it was a decent deal. A few pictures:
Cool, old school sticker - from when the Snap-on guy's number was simply "4640":
Logo:
Now here's where it gets a bit weird. It came with this bottom box:
There aren't any Snap-on logoes anywhere on it. (I can't find a Snap-on ID stamp on the upper box either, but my K-55-W doesn't have an apparent one despite being in great shape. It was from around the same time period. Either they did it faintly or they did it in some weird location?) It doesn't seem like a K-200 since it doesn't look like it ever had drawers in the bottom cabinet, and (although you can't really see it here) the bottom only sorta-kinda fits the top. The previous owner had put some wood there to serve as a makeshift spacer so the doors could open on the top...
But here's where it gets interesting. The paint on my old K-55-W is a very unique kind of wrinkle pattern that I'd never seen anywhere else. And the paint inside the bottom cabinet is -exactly- the same wrinkle pattern... which makes me wonder if it actually is Snappy after all, or was resprayed to match the top, or ... ?
This is the pattern I'm talking about:
My general plan for the top box was to remove the hardware, remove the paint (it's been repainted anyway), prime it and respray it - though I would have to save that sticker first! Does anyone know what color it was supposed to be? I remember when someone posted a feeler here about selling a K60 of his own, it was a burgundy color and there was a comment that this was the correct color for the box. Also, is the hardware supposed to be chromed? There's no visible chrome at this point, but then the box is 60 years old...
BTW, anyone (Snapmom?) care to comment on why the two logoes don't match despite being from about the same time? Is one a bit older than the other? The one on the K-60 includes the text about "Kenosha-Wisconsin Trade Mark Made in USA"... And is there a way to restore that one? From the way it wore, it looks like it had been painted white and then painted red, with the red then being gently abraded to produce raised white letters on a red background. Is this the case?
Thanks in advance!
