Hello all. Been a member here for a while now but mostly a lurker. Finally decided to make the plunge on having my garage built. It will mostly be used for storage of my extra project trucks and other various toys. After I read most of the builds on here mine doesn't seem very impressive but I figured I'd post it anyway and hope to get some insights and pointers as I move along with the project. Anyway on to a few pictures.

Here's where the garage will be laid out, I planned on a 30'x60'x14' pole barn with a 10'x30' lean to on the side

Clearing and leveling out the area

24 tons of 3/4 stone delivered

Materials delivered

setting the poles

Starting the framing

Roof trusses are up

The start of adding the roof and siding

Boring some holes in the basement for the water and chase conduit

The start of the trench

lines ran

Backfilling the trench

Gas and electric connections at the house

Mostly done

Lines ran into the pole barn

Lean to finished and garage doors installed

What I'm in some need of help with is how to insulate the slab, I'm not looking to do radiant floor heat mainly because of the cost, but I will be pouring concrete once I have the area properly prepped.

Things have been progressing, haven't posted much for updates I apologize.

I insulated the sides for where the slab will go with 2" foamboard

View from the front before the stone went down, I look like a toddler next to the 12' doors

Graded the inside

Stone going down

Vapor barrier and more foamboard insulation for the bottom of the slab

Decided to go with heated floors :D

Second vapor barrier and wire mesh reinforcement in place

Lines being run

The loops placed in the corner of the shop, seven 250' lengths ran in total

The mesh was placed on 1.5" bolsters to keep the pex and mesh in the middle of the slab during the pour

Concrete day

What equipment do you have that requires 12' doors? Will you be insulating and finishing out the insides? Looks like a very nicely built garage/shop from here.

looks like a nice place to play.

Thanks, it's been alot of work but I'm hoping it will be worth it in the end :willy_nil

I'd like to keep my backhoe in there on occasion and I sometimes work on taller trucks so I'd rather have the larger doors and not need them rather than be stuck with too small of a door in the future :bounce:

I hope to finish the inside yes, I don't get much time off from work so I will be chipping away in my spare time

If you haven't figured it out, the roof of the hoe makes a good work platform for installing lights and other items on the ceiling. I also found that raising the bucket and climbing up in a ladder also makes a good work platform.

Your building is looking good.

Very nice!

Pioneer?

Doesn't the gas line need a riser at building?

Yeah, where in SJ ?

Nice building, where are you in south Jersey?

Thanks, I'm in Cumberland county down towards Vineland.

Yeah I don't have scaffolding or anything so I'm thinking that the roof of the machine would work best. 14' ceilings are a little rough to work with!

Very nice!

Pioneer?

Yeah, where in SJ ?

Thanks, I used Shirk pole buildings. I got a quote from pioneer but their wait time was several months. I know a few people who have used shirk and pioneer in the past and both were happy so for me it was a toss up, the price was about the same so I went with who could build it quicker :)

That gas line that's inside is a spare line (I had a **** ton extra) so that is empty and used as a chase for cables in the basement (cable, network, etc.). The gas line itself is connected to a riser outside the building. Yes it is code to bring the gas into the building above ground.
Shirk was 2 weeks out and had it built in 3 days, amazing how fast those guys work! As I replied above, I'm down towards Vineland area.

Looks great.

Thank you.

I bought some closure strips from lowes and put them at the bottom where the trim meets the siding, this sealed the area up nicely from the breeze and bugs. The strips were cheap, I think I might have spent $20 to do the whole building. Just had to go around and take the bottom of the siding screws off and slide the foam in and then put the screws back. Took about an hour.

Before:

After:

I used some of the left over top soil I had from grading the area and put it around the lean to area and planted some grass seed to try and get my yard looking normal again

I forgot to mention when I had it built, the finished floor will be even with the foundation at my house so I don't have to worry about water intrustion. Based on the finished height, I added another skirt board all around to finish up the base.

I then wired up a 90 amp breaker to my existing 200 amp panel in the basement and ran the wire to the LB connector

100 amp subpanel finished

Nice progress

Thanks! The stone is finished out front, I opted to use the same stone I used under the concrete slab to go from my existing blacktop driveway back to the garage. I may in the future cement or blacktop it but for now the stones will do just fine

Started moving some of my equipment in, having the extra space to keep it inside is super nice, something I'm def not used to :bounce:

Great looking shed.

Thanks!

Man, that's a nice building! You won't regret going to 14' either.

Yep I went back and forth but the more I read the more I decided it was worth the small extra cost in the grand scheme of things.

Excellent blank canvas ! Now is the real hard part !

Oh yeah, I have big plans for the inside. The problem is I work 5-6 days a week 12 hr shifts so my time to work on it is limited. I did get a new toy for the garage this past weekend though, picked up an atlas PV10P :3gears:

Wasted no time and wired it up to test it out :pimpflash

Picked up a trailer load of copper to start on some air lines

Also started some wiring inside

A couple 220 lines for my welder, one on each side of the garage

and a 220 line for the compressor

What a great looking place and you're off to a good start.
While it looks huge to you now, might I suggest that you pour a small pad for the compressor outside and build a small enclosure for it. Stuff will accumulate and after a few years that compressor will be eating up some valuable floor space.

I did think about that, but I believe for now I'm just going to leave it in the corner and build a small closet for it, plus I feel that if it stays inside the tank will be less prone for temperature change which could cause excess moisture in the tank and/or lines.

The air lines are done

Ran 3 drops in total, 2 on each side of the shop half way between the front and rear. Used 3/4" all the way then swapped to 1/2" at the very end to give me the most capacity and volume over a 1/2" line.

3rd one is at the front in between the 2 big doors

Added a ceiling drop right by the lift

And one at the ceiling more towards the back of the area

These will be the two feeds for the system once I get finished, they will go through my air dryer first prior to passing into the piping.

Thanks, I've been spending every last minute I've got outside of work out here. Most of it's being done by myself so the progress is slow but progress nonetheless. Thank you for the compliments on the yotas, I have some bigger plans for the 4runners once the garage is finished so I have a space to tear them apart and tinker :D

Got a bunch more work done this weekend since I had the days off and some motivation. Started roughing the 110 wiring inside, a box for the fan controls

Fan mount boxes, just have to finish tying the box in, I ran out of time and screws lol. One mount in the rear of the shop

One in the front towards the lift.

Ran a box outside for a flood light outside the front of the garage doors

Roughed in the switched wiring for the eventual over head lighting, planning on running T8 florescent lights on digital cold start ballasts, as they seem to be the most cost effective between bulb life/energy usage/light output.

Ran a 110 box to the opposite side of the garage for outlets on that side

All the switches for the overheads will be ran to a box by the man door

My dad came over with his pipe threader and we ran black iron pipe from where the riser comes up outside to the other side where the boiler will eventually go

Put the gas line on pressure test and let it sit for the weekend

Also built a box in the overhead for a future air reel mount, probably a bit overkill but oh well haha. Used two 2x8s mounted to some 2x4s so I had plenty of chance to hit a stud once the ceiling is finished

New air reel from northern tools

Hopefully this kinda progress can continue next weekend.

I am on pirate but I don't post much on there. The info on my tacoma is here

http://www.toyotaoff-road.com/threads/another-swb-build.978/

So I was deciding on what to do with the ceiling and then this happened

Started moving some stuff in

Next up was to work on my air drop in the ceiling, used some unistrut and made a plate for the reel that bolts to the unistrut

Went with 1/4", because #overkill :bounce: The plasma does nice work, smooth as a baby's bottom

Finished

Next up will be wiring up 110 outlets and the overhead lights.

Nice looking shop & land! Concrete work looks perfect!

Not sure if this was asked already - Are you planning on insulating & finishing the walls?

Hey I did get your PM, just sent back a reply let me know if you got it!

Impressive set up.

Thanks!

Got some more work done last week, lights and fans are finished it is nice being able to see inside :rocker:

I will likely add some more lighting down the road but these should do for now.

Had a guy stop over that wanted some tube work added to his bumper so he got to be the first customer in the newly lit shop :D

I also got a few sets of shelving set up for some of the junk I had laying around

Next up will be finishing the inside walls and doing some insulation. There's also alot of 110V wiring to finish up.

Looks awesome. Great inspiration for my upcoming build. How hard was the radiant heat and have you gotten to use it yet?

The truck looks great by the way. I think I've seen you up a Rausch Creek before.

Thank you. I dunno haha I read alot of the other threads and people have dedicated garages bigger and nicer than my house. I'm happy with how mine's turning out so far though!

Thanks! Running the pipes for the radiant heat wasn't hard at all, just a little time consuming. I haven't gotten a boiler hooked up for it yet, I'm waiting to find a good deal on something so for now I've just been using a 135k btu heater that runs off diesel and that seems to work ok for the time being. Plan for the radiant will be to make it simple since it will be one zone and just use a power vented water heater and a circulator with a temperature mixing valve.

I've been up at Rausch a few times last year, the latest trip I followed my buddy around who's truck is much more capable than mine and I ended up blowing up my front differential on yellow jacket :shocking:
