To the guys who collect tools as a "hobby" I know I may be guilty as well. I feel its better than most things people collect. At the end of the day they are useful (they are tools after all) and they have a decent resale compared to other things people collect.

Just having a quick glance here I would say Wagoner72 is a polisher and I would like to ask him how much he owes on the tools/boxes as if he is really only 21(unless he still lives at home or someone buys his tools for him) he would have struggled to have made enough money in his life to pay for a collection like that, but it is a very nice collectiob even if I can only see a couple of tools that look like they have been used.

Based off his past posts it looks like he does well flipping Snapon Boxes and if I had to bet he doesn't owe a dime for what was posted :rocker:

This is the one cultural part of garage journal I've never understood. I've worked with guys who took **** care of their tools, and guys who took great care of them.

One of the best tradesman I've ever worked with kept his tools in bags, dirty and in a jumble. Another keeps everything perfectly sorted and clean. It's just not a useful metric.

And I've seen people who look like they wrestled a greased monkey (me) when they're done working on their car, and I've seen people who could go out to a nice dinner after doing the same job (my father).

*seriously, the man hasn't owned a t-shirt in 30 years and irons and creases his jeans.

That's my uncle. Hes a retired iron worker and he swore after he retired he'd never wear jeans again. I can't recall him wearing jeans in over 10-15 years. He does all my welding for me and no lie, he wears a button down Hawaiian shirt or similar, khaki shorts and flip flops. Same outfit for auto repairs, mowing the lawn, up on a ladder painting his house, etc. And he always has a toothpick in his mouth.

A tool polisher to me is someone who buys the gold-plated Sears commemorative wrench set in the walnut box and never uses them. See eBay!

If I ever see one of those cheap, I may buy it and the use the heck out of the tools and scratch them all to heck and back.

Then resell them.

I'm not a very good tool polisher. You should see the rusty mismatched junk in my boxes.

Am I a tool polisher if I wipe down my cordless/air tools with simple green before I put them away or the handles of the tools I used on the job?

No, you would be in the tool abuser category as that will cause them to crack and break down over time.

Just search " MTSC socket " on Ebay and you'll come up with some gold-plated (or gold-finished) presentation sets. They're listed on there almost daily.
Nice little Bonney set on there right now with a starting bid of $15 bucks - that's about as cheap as you're going to get.

I am sure I would be considered a tool polisher by many because if I need a tool even once I will buy it (even if I may not need to use it again), and I will buy a nicer tool when a cheaper one will do for no other reason than it makes me happy to do so. My tools don't earn me money, so this has turned into me having a pretty nice collection of stuff compared to the average DIYer - some of which gets used frequently, but much of which gets used rarely. My tools don't make me money, so there is really not much practical reason to buy nicer stuff as opposed to Craftsman. I don't really care though, it makes me happy so I do it. And the other benefit is that you never know when you will need a tool in the future. An example - a year ago I got a few pairs of Knipex linesman pliers just because I found them for $7 new. Couldn't turn down that deal. Didn't use them for a year but the other day had to run a bunch of Romex and I was glad to have them.

Burn me at the stake if you want, I also "waste" money driving a BMW and going out to eat. In the end, nothing really matters unless it makes you happy.

Nah, you're not a tool polisher. In my mind, once you use a tool even if only once, you are a tool user. I "waste" a lot of money on tools and food also - and I enjoy every bit of the "waste". :bounce:

I might be becoming a tool polisher. I have been working in the shop waxing my tool box and oiling my tools today.

I believe as previously mentioned that at a tool polisher is someone who has no mechanical knowledge but buys top quality tools and never uses them.

I agree with this. Kind of like a hard-parker. This is the person that puts all the race parts on his car. The only time it has been to the track, it is parked in the spectators area.

By this definition, I am safe. I have mechanical knowledge and I use my tools.

Which is one of the strangest things ever. That's like buying pots, pans, etc, but always ordering out or eating frozen food. Do pot & pan polishers exist?
