The real question is ........

Vise's - Do you have a Reed 209 or a Craftsman 5199 in your collection ?

(and are they Arrest-Me-Red ?)

That's a negative. I've been hunting those two for some years now and haven't crossed paths with either. I know where some are but you be better off trying to harvest gold out of Fort Knox.

Vises, your collection is incredible! Do you have photos of any anvils that you could show us?

Does anyone have a photo of a Reed 209 or a Craftsman 5199 that they could post up? An internet search didn't find any.

VISEs ... how much do those RR stands weigh? Do you have even an idea of the cost, like even a ballpark? I have no idea of the market prices of the originals, saw two at $1K ea. And they sat forever but eventually sold (not sure of the final price).

P.S. Do you have a Prentiss 98? If yes, on a RR stand, or??

There's a local Prentiss No 19 for sale...the seller is asking $60. I see a cracked slide in the rear and possible missing pins/screws (not sure - see pic below), but other than that, is it worth buying? Still usable?

Not even sure that is a crack in the slide could just be a scratch in the paint. $60 is a really good deal if you need a vise and who on this thread doesn't need a vise.

;)

There are 3 versions of the RR stand that I know about, could be more, they range in weight between 800 and 1,000 pounds each.

$1,000 for one of these stand seems the be the new normal. Which is a bunch of **** from a buyers prospective (me). That said I just recently paid $1,000 for one. The guy has two more.....I offered $1,500 each for them and he wouldn't take it.....yet! So I call him every Wednesday at 2:30 just to make sure....ha!

How many of us do you think it would take ordering one before the price was at or below $1K? Or I guess I should ask how many stands because some may want multiple!!

Hi All!
I have an Athol 924-1/2 Vice that has been laying around my shop for some time. It needs some TLC and a set of vice jaws.
I've done some looking, but don't have all the time it would take to go thru all the great info in this thread! 2559 pages... OMGosh!
In any event, i'll post up a couple pics. Maybe someone can lead me in the right direction.
Oh yeah, it has a broken bolt in one of the chuck jaw mounts.
Other than that, I think with a little TLC and some jaws, I'll be in business!
Thanks in advance for any help you all can give me.
Mike

Bad news...

The Craftsman 5199 is a "Delusion" of a Senior Citizen...;)

As soon as I win the Lottery, Reverend Scott is going to whittle me one out a large chunk of billet steel...It may even have a rotating jaw...With all of that, I would "Guesstimate" that it would weigh in excess of 180 pounds...That's some kind of serious for a 6" vise!!!:shocking:

Double Swivlin' B@#tards are OK...

Now, where the hell is that 209????:headscrat:3gears:

Like your color choice!!!

VISES: thanks for posting the INTERESTING ONES and if you have time and a lot more to post you won't hear any complaints from me and maybe anybody here.

GOOD STUFF

also about the big RR stands you can PM me even though i don't own an 8 inch vise i might some day. also i know there is at least one member here that drives freight for a living or Fastenal has pretty decent rates. Or maybe you can just load up your trailer and meet some of the guys that are GJ MEMBERS that own a big of old steel and a trophy one to mount on your custom stand.

I've been saving a few tons of steel for when somebody around me agrees to cast a 10 incher that might weigh 500 pounds cause i think that 695 pound RR Pittsburgh vise still needs to be the biggest one for the hunt.

cheers

ALL: ANYBODY NOT LIKE VISE'S VISES (VICES) he's been posting? or maybe a few more KUDOS are in line to get him to dig out a few of the BIG UNS.

have a great weekend everybody

Nice article! I'm a novice vise collector, and this type of stuff helps a lot. If I may, seems to be a minor typo in the seventh paragraph... seems it should be "and it shows when they break."

Photos added to the article would make it amazing! Thanks!

Thanks! Pics are in the plans/works :)

Dynasty, Those three pin holes are used in fixturing when the swivel jaw was manufactured. Two on one side and one on the other. Imagine how you would locate and hold the swivel jaw to machine it. The cracked slide is repairable. I'd be all over that vise.

Yesterday I got a unique opportunity to go picking at Philippe Klinefelter's shop in Austin, TX he is one of the most famous and talented sculptors in the US. He wanted me to come by and purchase his grandfathers power hammer (which I did plus a few more things)
IMG_7009.JPG

Long short is this vise was sitting in his shop. It instantly gave me zipper burn and I knew I wouldn't be a complete man without it so I started inquiring about it.....he told me no way no how would he sell it to me or anyone. So I left without it. Bummer! But then he called me today and said that he slept on it and wanted me to come back on Monday to pick it up! ZIP A DEE FREAKING DOO DAH DAY! I'm crazy excited!

These vises belong to my 4 year old son. He says he went picking at daddy's shop and found some just his size. Ha! I love my boys!

Amen!

And I must add this. A vise mounted on a workbench is good and useful. But a vise mounted on a stand, any stand will do, is really functional and perfect!

Joined awhile back . May have previously posted my first couple Vises . Don't remember. Recently learned from nice GJ folks how to post pics from Dumb Pad.

I picked up a big Reed MFG Co vice a year ago from a silent auction up at my work to the employees. Surprised I picked it up for only $50. It's nice & heavy, also picked up the table with 1" steel top for $80. It will all be going up to my new pole barn shop in the next week or so.

Not sure of the Reed vices but it was cheap enough & it's a nice heavy piece.
