If a vise gets put on a stand does it mean there is no longer a need for the swivel base? Just a vise newb curiosity question. I have a columbian 605 that may go off the bench and on to a stand. It's got a swivel base currently but I don't think it would be of much use if mounted on a stand?
Also still I need of new serrated jaws for it IF anyone know someone with a huge inventory of vise "stuff". [emoji16]

Even more crazy is that, I offered $201 on one and he took it! They aren't getting your credit card number if you use PayPal and Paypal will give you your money back if it turns out to be a scam. Not saying it isn't a scam, but it seems legit and it's really pretty low risk.

How do you sort out the import/tax stuff? I haven't done that in years, and I'm sure it's all changed.

It has been a while, so I broke out the Wilton magnet again. I think I'm going to take a ride with it tomorrow as well.

This morning I managed a solid, but rusty 400N. The handle didn't even want to move in the spindle, but it was just surface rust holding it in place. The jaws were pretty decent, and it really hasn't seen much use. I was going to paint it verde green, but grabbed hammered light blue by accident. After the first spray I decided it was just as easy to keep going than try changing!



It cleaned up well. A little light flap disc work on the jaw supports, and anvil, and it smoothed out nicely. Lots of wire brush work, but I got it down to bare metal, so it should stay nice for a long time.

Tonight:



The lineup is changing....500S on the far right side of the board has a new home on Monday. I've decided that I don't have a vise restoration problem, I'm helping people who have a vise collecting problem!

Yeah ,ive got all kind of parts for a 4-1/2 wilton. I got a cap here and swivel base, a couple good spindles, a nice static half too.

It's a good question no doubt. There are pros and cons both ways but I say get the version that functions best for the style of work you are geared towards.

I like the versatility of the swivel for fabrication purposes.

Additionally I like the rigidity of a non swivel for heatin' and beatin' purposes..when you are really getting down on a rusty stuck bolt/nut type a thing.

Good question and I really don't know. I've ordered relatively low cost stuff from Canada a number of times and there was never any import taxes/tarriffs/duty or anything. Most recently it was 3 thermostats at about $80 each. I'm sure it depends on the type of product and the value, but don't know more than that. Hope we don't get squeezed by it on this deal.

ALL: there was a guy selling a pallet of new Miller 211 welders a year or two ago from Canada for under a grand and it ended up being a scam.

i can't ship a Wilton 70 pound vise that big to somebody in the USA much less across the boarder to Canada for less than $75 so the FREE SHIPPING would red flag it for me.

i hope you don't all get burned cause sometimes deals are REALLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE.

ANYBODY besides JIM REED our lead instructor on the Woodworking 101 thread put wood bases under their vises and either bolt or clamp them down?

i just took a 70+ year old little open screw vise off a shed's bench that had it's original pipe jaws and it had a 3/4 piece of plywood cut exactly to the size of the swivel's base so it sat above the damp wet wood bench full of rat **** and piss. now for the kicker. under the vise after removing the little piece of 3/4 plywood the vise isn't rusty and looks damn near new. i would almost be willing to wager that even the NOS vises i own might be a little rusty in that area. GO FIGURE?

That is a beautiful piece of work. There are a few guys who would pay that much for such a work of art. Here is what the builder says...

"This piece is a project I just built for fun. I was looking at buying a vise and got inspired. Everything I was looking at was just an ugly block and I decided to build something beautiful as well as functional. This is a light duty vise. It would would be good as an engraver's vise. You could also use it hold something else for display. But it's pretty enough to be displayed on it's own."

No kidding! Of course it's pretty enough to be displayed on it's own

Although I myself would make an argument that a Wilton 920 also would fit that category. One could probably obtain an NOS or mint restoration baby bullet for 1/4 the price or less.

The price! $2k for that. I'm not seeing it! I have several homemade vises. And I quite like brainstorming why, how, etc one made the vise. I've never paid more than $100 for a homemade vise and can't imagine anyone paying $2,000 for that one. Crazy!

I don't see that homemade vise being useful for even engraving. You need a fully adjustable vise for that, and that one is fixed. Most engravers use ball vises and three point jaws for irregular objects...

As to beauty, that is in the eye of the beholder... Is it interesting looking? Sure, but not particularly useful.
