Hello, I have a messy situation with my screw type door opener, you can see how the grease accumulates and eventually drops to the garage floor.

To me the door is somewhat loud when it opens, I thought the wheel bearing grease would be the solution, but it still makes a mess.

Just thoughts - You are over greasing it, excess falls off.

Noisey? Not sure of the noise source, may or may not be normal, but an alignment or something issue, not a greasing issue , at least seems that way.

No solution, just thoughts. Marc

I don't know about screw drives, but chain drives require nothing more than WD-40. A garage door guy I know said never use the white lithium grease... WD-40 is more than adequate once or twice a year.

WD40 is not a lubricant (ok it is in the sense that water and milk are lubricants) but its not a real lubricant

You wanna see a real mess? Use WD40! The only lubricants recommended by Genie were made by Lubriplate, a low temperature white grease. As close to dripless if used correctly. You can use WD40 to clean up that mess.

In the past I've taken openers outside and sprayed the **** out of the screw with WD while cycling. Lubriplate comes in a tube, just run a small bead on the screw and with the carriage connected continually wiping excess. Reinstall opener, just keep an eye on opener for a couple days to avoid any dripping. Good as new!

These are a case where less is actually better. This will work on any brand screw opener.

My parents genie screw drive did the same thing. While it wasnt greased as heavy as yours, you could see grease on the hoods of vehicles that were parked in there. Thing was loud as heck, you couldnt talk when it was going up and down. Ill never own a screw drive...

My friend has a belt drive (don't know brand) but that thing is dead silent. All you hear is the slight 'thunk' when the door finally reaches the ground.

Are your rollers worn? Currently I have a chain opener, and when I lubed the rollers, hinges and tracks, it quieted it down a ton.

I used:

My friend has a belt drive (don't know brand) but that thing is dead silent. All you hear is the slight 'thunk' when the door finally reaches the ground.

Been researching openers, and Chamberlain makes one with a soft close feature, where it slows the door down in the last few inches.

Nylon with bearings is where it's at, I love those things haha. Hate the short stem ones though, we use I believe 6 or 8" stem rollers. Reason being, cable brakes and comes off the drum, door is going to **** to one side. Usually bowing the track and pulling the opposing roller out the hinge. That leaves the section (s) hanging unsecured. Might not sound bad at a home but a 14'x14' insulated that gets hit when 2/3rds of the way up, its the difference between a door falling or still holding on. Hate short stem rollers.
