I've been doing a LOT of reading on here lately and I'm looking to build my own workshop in the back yard. Due to the lay of the land I'm limited to something 24-30' wide and can go back 60' or so before I get close to the septic leach bed lines that run diagonally across my back yard to the back left corner of the lot - I do NOT want to get into relocating that mess.

The reasoning behind the height is for framing in a full second floor above the 14' shop which I will be installing a lift in down the road. With the span only being 24 feet I can use engineered lumber to clear span it without a 60' center beam or add supports. I will need to consult with them or whomever ends up doing the final engineering on this in regards to scissor trusses to open the ceiling height up on the second floor as well as column loads with a second floor applied (for humans and light storage only, no engine blocks, there will be pallet racking for that). Although, after doing some math, it appears the compressive strength of the posts is more than adequate and them going from 2x6 lam columns to 2x8's is mainly for side loads at this height than compressive loads that a second floor would apply.
Now I'm most likely going to need to figure another foot higher because a 14' door won't open up into a 14' ceiling which I'm mandating for the ability to put an RV or semi in the main bay.
Floor heating. After building my brother's place with it I won't not have it.
Those that have a long narrow garage, what are your gripes and what would you do differently?
I'll post up an aerial photo with a rough layout showing land features and what I'm thinking this evening.
