Well finally got a pair of these universal jaws. I tried them on a athol vise and they didn't seem to fit very well so I put them on a newer style Parker vise and they seem to work pretty darn good.

Do you have a link for those jaws?

Search on Eprey...

No doubt. I cant figure out what im looking at in that pic.

Exactly. Several of us have one, two, or more of these, (I only have 1 for a 4-5" - has one more small jaw in it...) and yes they fit Parkers nicely. I'm still looking got the mate for my singleton...

Thread should be labeled "Danger Infectious "

A few months ago I was an innocent owner of a 40yr old Buffalo Taiwan vise. In the ensuing time, with Drive's help, I acquired a Reed 1C I am restoring, just have to finish the new handle I got from Kevin. Then I found a pristine Rock Island 8xx with swivel jaw. Now after a 6hr drive I have added a a Reed 4C. The drive to get the 1C was 8 hrs but I love being on the road.
The seller of the 4C owns a big metal recycling plant so I also got some stand parts.
I stopped at our local fish market and got the first bushel of oysters to take with me so now have good relationship for the future. The picture of the 2 dynamic jaws is my 1C next to the 4C. I think it gives a good perspective of the size difference. Thanks to Drive's for all the mentoring and critical advice. I am very impressed with the people and camaraderie on this thread with out the inflated egos. As for Vises collection just remember everything is bigger in Texas .

NC: nice find and pick up on the vises you've found to buy. your quality of the ones you've found are all on my top 20 so WELL DONE SIR.

also driving 12 hours+ to pick up a REED 4c is a lot more fun than having one shipped isn't it. i bet the smile on your face during the drive home especially will be hard to remove. nice touch with the fresh OYSTERS!!

VISES: I agree my Reed 4C is one of my favorites, but sadly i still need to build a stand for it. to have it as a daily user though is something to see so do you have any pictures of yours holding a house or something in it's jaws?

ALL: any of you ever build an arch cause i'm supposed to build an arch full of books for my daughter's wedding now that i've finished the Wedding chair. check the thread and post there if you might have any ideas on how i can build a frame to hold a few hundred books.

cheers

Im sort of near dayton. About 120 miles. That guy has been tryin to sell that parker for a very long time. I think i spoke to him 8 months ago and i think theres something wrong with the spindle retainer. There was something else wrong as well but cant remember what. Looks like the lockdown is missing as well

So this brings me to some questions. Most (probably all) of you are FAR MORE educated on vises than I am. My collection (attached) is small, and right now with a wife going through chemo, it isn't going to grow.

I know IF I ran into a Wilton for cheap that needed parts, I could get them. I know handles, jaws, bases, can be replaced for most any vise.

What makes you walk away?

What is the weak point of each brand?

What would you buy, even if it's flawed?

I've built something similar. One way is to use thin sheets of masonite. Secure the outside ends of the masonite, pulling them towards each other, and the center will arch. Glue a second sheet to the first. If you can have a sacrificial book or two, you can secure them to the arch to help keep the others from sliding. Good luck. I've been keeping up on the chair project. Nicely done. It's always best to keep MANAGEMENT happy.

OK some new vise unicorns to search for, Hollands Mfg Co 9" vises! Should be model number 19 fixed base and 29 swivel base! From 1915 book "Mill Supplies" by Crawford Publishing

The Hollands Manufacturing Co Erie Pa has added to its line of machinists vises a 9 inch size that is the jaw is 9 inches wide. They are made in both stationary and swivel base types following the same lines as the other sizes of Hollands vises but much more massive. The company has also added to its products a line of pressed steel solder and babbitt metal ladles with electric spot welded flexible steel handles. The company states that joining the handle of the bowl to the ladle by this process obviates the difficulties which have usually been experienced with steel ladles through the rivets becoming loose by expansion and contraction.

Anything welded or cracked i walk away from. Availabilty of replacement parts is a biggy too. Rarity and strangeness of the vise in another. Jaw condition is another. Some vises have jaws that arent replaceable. However the Wilton brand is highly sought after. Ive even bought busted ones just to part out. Wilton bullet swivel bases usually sell for 70-100 complete by themselves when parted out.

A quick fun story. Let's title this one "you never know".

You never know......what may pop up or where or why it may pop up for sale so I say always and I mean always be on the look out! I watch Craigslist like a hawk for a couple reasons. One is "you never know" what's going to come up for sale next (the other reason is I have a newbie "so called" vise collector breathing down the back of my neck and it absolutely pisses me off when he gets one before me! The guy has zero territory respect)
So I check Craigslist and I see that someone in Houston Tx just posted 2 NOS Wilton 800n and 2 NOS still in the box Yost 34C. Of course I did the responsible thing and I stopped working to call this guy. He tells me that the Wilton vises had just sold but the other two were still available. I wanted to cry like a little baby (I actually did cry but who cares it was an emotional loss for me)
I bought the 2 Yost vises and they are nice good heavy vises but I wanted the stupid Wilton vises...so call me spoiled....a brat....or whatever you want. I won't disagree!! HA!!! LMAO!!
A month goes by and I receive a call from a young guy in the next town who has a NOS Wilton 800n that he wants to sell.....I said wait a freaking minute!! You do? I said "you actually have two you sniper sucker you"...and the phone went dead....WTheck!! I instantly called back....no answer...dammit!! He hung up on me!!! I blew it! What a shame!! I was a failure!!
Meanwhile later that same evening.....my phone rings again...same number as the guy with the two Wilton's!!! Hello sir hello sir, I'm stuttering.....he says "sorry about my phone dropping your call earlier...my battery went dead. PRAISE THE LORD!!!! I'm not a looser, failure after all!!! We talk for a good while and I end up with both of the Wilton's!! What a victory!
So keep looking cause you never know....

OLDIE: yep for 8 and 9 inchers over 250 pounds no swiveling is usually required.

Vises: you know i'm getting the picture now why i've shipped a few vises to HOUSTON in the past when members searching can't find a vise to buy in YOUR AREA. i'm guessing you like vintage more than new, but 20 year old new vintage vises just HAVE TO BE BOUGHT. right?

cheers and hope you find a keeper this weekend.

ALL: have a great weekend looking for a keeper or even a parts vise to fix a keeper you own or will own. about the only think not vintage in my garage is my fridge so i thought i'd start a vintage fridge thread in vintage tools cause it truly is a tool we all need to keep us on top of our game. anybody have a vintage fridge in their garage or shop?

cheers

Just an interesting fact, when Demo posted this vise, he was showing a few other of his big guns and how much they weighed. I can't recall exact numbers but the Hollands 19 was in the 290-300 lb range, his Holland 28 was about 330 lbs....his heaviest vise if IIRC.

Also, a question if anyone knows, Columbian & Parker had some 8 1/4 to 8 1/2" jawed vises. Did anyone other than Hollands & Reed have 9"?
