Rock Island #594 vice jaw screws???

Hi Folks, first post here. Been lurking for awhile.

I am restoring an old Rock Island #594. I removed the jaws but need new screws. They are 5/16-18 threads with a crazy countersink. Been told it's 60deg but wondering if there is somewhere to buy them online. Any ideas?

Dragon: are you a HARRY POTTER fan too? i like Rock Island vises and noticed your handle which might not have anything to do with HP, but thought i'd ask. welcome to the group and i came armed with a great vise.

you might be able to find an exact match buying a new one, but a lot of guys here put a screw in their drill press, lathe or even a drill and while it's moving they file the angle and custom fit the screw into their vises.

good luck and ask questions if you still need help and yes PICTURES always help if you can post up a few even it's only to give us some more vise or tool ****.

Thanks all for the suggestions so far... I will post pics in a few minutes. On Harry Potter... no relation and never have read the books... just a handle I came up with years ago. I have been asked about a couple times before though.

I don't have a lathe but I do have a drill press. Never tried such a maneuver machining a screw down that way but I love the idea. Might be my fastest cheapest option for sure.

Okay here are a few pics to excite a few here (I knew I would catch heck for no pics on the original post)... I've already disassembled everything but the handle assy so I guess the first pic I will call the exploded view. Second pic is the part number and the painted over riveted on metal tag. I was pleased how the paint remover I used cleaned off the paint and exposed the tag nicely.

The four screws, along with the pin to hold the female end of the ACME thread in place as well as a couple candidate screws are in the bin. Obviously, only two at most are the original screws. Two were flathead and they came out fine. The other two were cross recess and they didn't. I had to use an easy out to remove them.

I will be blasting the parts when I get my sandblaster rebuilt in a couple weeks. I will also probably machine a couple of new smooth jaws. The current knurled jaws are in okay shape, with one corner broke off but is on the underside. Would be nice to have some new jaws though!

Also, any idea on the date of manufacture? I found a mark 3 8 7 on a couple places. Wondering if that is July 1938?

Dragon: a single vise on a thread usually doesn't last long and that's why i started the vise repair 101 thread so guys would get their vises on there and we'd talk about them until the vise was repaired or given up and kept as a parts vise. that way if another member has the same questions you are asking they can just check one thread.

i can't tell you how many times I (we've) been asked how to find or make those screw heads or to date a vise, but it's up there with ARE WE THERE YET if you are a parent.

not that we don't want to help you or see you find your answers, but we already have a thread in place that answers a lot of your questions.

on some of my Rock Island vises there is a date stamped on top of the dynamic slide just behind the static. others do have #'s stamped underneath that might be the dates too. post up some pictures of your Rock Island over on the 101 thread and ask questions if you can't find your answers. or just post up the vise pictures and tell us again how YOU MADE the screws because we all have a little different spin on how we make ours. OK?

don't feel left out i start some threads that might have 500,000 views now and it seems like nobody was there for a long time. or when i ask a question sometimes i have to find my own answer if not here on GJ and a member can't see the question by Googling or trial and error.

If you do a search on a specific thread instead of an entire forum you usually get fewer better results, but if you want to read the entire thread we made I for one would like to know what you think. I'm pretty sure you'll learn more than a few things.

Here is the finished vise... I used Rustoleum Hammered Rosemary spray paint. Pretty happy on how it turned out. I had one of my guys at my work make a set of jaws. He went above and beyond the call with the knurling and he also sent it out for Heat Treat with our production work! I think I owe him big time!
