Came across this technology reading up on Facom tools. We have had tool box digital inventory for a while now using cameras, but this takes things to another level. Facom tools is putting RFID chips in their tools for locating, assigning, and general tool control. I'm sure like the snap on tool box with the camera based inventory system this is prohibitively expensive. But seriously they are tracking our tools now; What are we going to do about this?

Meh, batteries don't last forever.

That is aimed at industry only as an option for loss or misplacement. Joe in his garage at home is safe.

I could see this becoming commonplace in industry. My work environment everything is supplied and as such sharing between shift is commonplace. Would be nice to be able to locate said item when needed. We used to have a tool crib with tool attendants but did away with that years ago. Personally at my age I would utilize this on every 10 mm tool I have .

In case you guys weren't able to tell, I'm not being serious. I am going into the aviation field where this is becoming more and more commonplace.

I worked at a firm a few years back where they started with shadow boards then eventually supplied us all with rollcabs that had foam liners for all the tools.Worked great if you were OCD .

Do you mean when they added radios, or when you first started hearing the voices?

My HS buddy had an 88 Maxima that tried to convince us his door was a jar, it would argue with us for hours. I knew right then I didn't want a vehicle with a computer in it. :lol_hitti

A jar for a door? That car was nutz. How would you have gotten through a jar to get into the car.:willy_nil

I work in areas that have a FME control. There was talk several years ago that all our tools would be set up this way to track them for Foreign Material Control in the units.

If I had my way the only vehicle I would own would be an OD green 72 K5 Blazer with a 3 inch lift and Dana 60 axles.

Not really anything new. I worked on a production line a decade ago where every tool - even every allen wrench - on your process's shadowboard was chipped. You could only remove one tool at a time and had to replace it before grabbing another or before you put your machine back in auto. Failure to do so or to grab a second tool off the board would shut down every process in that department and your light would blink so everyone knew who was the screwup. It took a supervisor to come over and swipe their badge after verifying your shadowboard was complete before you could start up your machine again. Make that same mistake a few times and you'd be looking for a new job.

Personally I really liked that system. Nothing I hate more than following someone on a process and the shadowboard is incomplete and the tools that should be on it are missing or strung all about wherever.

Wait until they tag YOU with an RFID tag......!

Pretty sure they tagged me when I had wisdom tooth surgery. I'm missing about a week from that strange experience that idk wtf happened. Now I have a feeling someone is watching me and my jaw hurts when I got through scanners. I think I pick up wifi and pretty sure I pick up ham radio too.

I'm feeling a bit nervous now after reading this. I went and got an old ammo container, filled it with Plomb tools, oiled them real well and buried it in my yard. I'll be ready when they come take all the newer tools away. BE PREPARED, You may be next!

Snap On has been at this for a while. RFID chips, brain scanners, whether-or-not-the-tech-has-taken-a-dump-that-day sensors, zipper down scanners, etc.

They call it Level 5 Tool Control. I'm convinced it's the government prying into our toolboxes. Definitely.

Here's the Snap On Industrial promo/demo video:

Back in thd 70s when they first came out with the seatbelt warnings it drove folks nuts. We weren't allowed to do anything. Then mb came out with a "fix" which was unplugging the sensor under the seat. We sure had a bunch of happy customers after that. Seems the feds overstepped their authority back then.

hey if this technology could be used to locate tools and equipment after having your tools stolen, it would be a great thing.

wake up go to van or shed: where are my tools, **** ive been robbed,
use technology, tracker: moving down the streeth two blocks away
jump in your car and catch and beat the thieves or ring the cops,

get tools back and take extra for your troubles

note if you ring the cops, tell them they can either catch the thieves or bring body bags, around here the police don't have the resources to tackle tools theft

Honestly this would be really handy at my work. Not for loss prevention, but for figuring out who has the fricken tool you need! Although knowing my employer, they would probably half *** it just like they did for the truck key box...

My wife is a nurse and they have a similar system at the hospital for meds.

I am working on a RFID solution for an aerospace client to track expensive tools & dies. Another piece of information that our big data solutions can use to optimize the manufacturing process, machine tool efficiency, up time and product workflow.
