Vinyl Privacy Fence Gates

I have a question for the fencing gurus of the bunch.

After completion of my new shop I will be completing the perimeter of my back yard with the 6' vinyl privacy fence to match the neighbors yards. Several of my neighbors have about a 12' wide RV pad alongside of their homes with a dual gate at the front. Each gate being respectively approx. 6' wide. A post mounted next to the house and a column/post mounted on the RV pad in which the gates hinge on.

My question is I want to have a 25' wide concrete driveway going from the street back to my detached garage/shop in the back yard. In order to accomplish this I know I will have to have wheels on the gates to support the structure. Can they make 6' vinyl fence gates in roughly 12' lengths? I want to be able to use one 12' gate for the majority of the driving in and out of the back yard but on occasion such as when pulling my coach out or when getting ready to load it for a trip I want to have the option to open up another approx. 12' wide gate giving me full width access to the back yard.

Does that sound like something that can be accomplished by having two 12' wide gates?

Thanks.

Mike.

Seems like a large distance to span with the vinyl, perhaps fab up a metal frame and use metal end posts were the fence terminates at the drive way, then clad the gate with vinyl panels?

See post 4904 in the welding projects thread in Fab Section here on GJ, something like that?

Thanks. I will look at that.

My wife wants to stay with the vinyl theme but I am wanting to do another steel ornamental like I built at my last house. I think the steel ornamental will look better and then also allow a view of the shop in the back yard. I told her we are paying dearly for that brick and stucco on the detached garage, we may as well have a see thru gate to show it off.:headscrat

I welded up a metal frame - this is about an 11' opening hinged on the left side. I then later added wooden pickets to the front to match the neighbor's fence

I did something similar at my old house to keep my dog in my yard. my driveway was 11' wide but the opening was 12'

so I built my own gate out of 4x4's and 2x6's stained, poly'd added a pnuematic wheel to the end which worked great. the problem arose that te pheumatic wheels dont last long at all.. maybe a year. finally after the 4th i said fuckk it, and left it, and that was 3 years ago, the gate now rolls on the steel rim - thats all thats left of the wheel....but i sold that house so now its some one elses problem

What about a wheel of some sort at the end for support? :dunno:

If you are really looking to keep the all vinyl look this may be the easiest approach.

I am really leaning towards a sliding ornamental gate like I built at my last house. It had a dual wheel at the leading edge, rolled fantastic and looked great. I am really leaning towards building another one to show off the shop in the back yard but the wife was wanting to stay with the vinyl. I think I will talk her out of it though.

Thanks for all who responded and for the comments.

Maybe find some existing vinyl fencing that's been up for awhile. Show her.

How does that look? Bad with weather marks, stains etc?

I actually like the vinyl privacy fence and that is what we will be going with as it is all that is allowed in our subdivision, it is the gates that I don't care on such a wide span because they start sagging after a while.

We installed a 6' vinyl fence last year as well as a pad for RV parking. There was an unusable slope, so a retaining wall was put in. The gate is 12' wide, and the parking area behind the fence is 16' W x 40' long. Our fencing contractor told us 12' was the widest they recommended in the double gate, swing style. These were the best pics I could get in short order, hopefully this helps.

Thanks. That helps my argument. I will be gating off a 22-24 foot opening so each gate would have to be approx. 12' on a swing style and didn't think it was practical to span that far.

I actually prefer a sliding gate as it can tuck up just behind the fence when open vs. having to swing out in an arc. Much nicer for my application when pulling vehicles into the back yard and merely sliding the gate open to allow enough space to enter vs. having to stay back far enough to clear the arc of the gate.

Thanks again for the comments. I am really leaning towards just building another ornamental steel sliding gate and having it powder coated to match the dark brown trim on the house. It should tie in nicely with the adobe vinyl privacy fence yet still allow to see the nice brick/stucco garage in the back yard.

I like your final idea.
But a sliding steel frame for strength and a vinyl picket covering for looks may be an idea.

I have 8' vinyl fence sections. They're reinforced with steel inside. I can't say I've ever seen a 12' section though. I'm with you. I think this requires a steel gate skeleton, but can be made to fit in with the vinyl decor.

I used to install fences. They have aluminum frames in the gates. Not all do, so you need to make sure you spec it out.

Git.... Did you use mild steel tubing for your frame ? What kind of hinges and what size did you use ?

I too have to fence in my side yard for my trailer and rig, but my opening will be 25' wide, so I have to make double 12.5 gates to allow full access.

I originally was going to make it out of aluminum due to the length, but wondering if steel at 12' will be too heavy ?

(I'd prefer steel as I can mig weld it.... - otherwise I'd have to by a spool gun to aluminum weld as I'm not overly anxious to tig weld 12 foot gates together....)

Do you have finished shots of your gate once it's finished ?

My concerns are bylaws limiting fence and gate heights, but wondering if I can raise my gate height by adding plastic "foiliage" on the top section that could be "removed" if needed.... (I know you can purchase fake plastic tree piece - similar to fake Christmas tree plastic that would allow fast, light and easy extension to any given gate.

Otherwise, this plastic fence material - other than pre-made fence panels, can it be purchased in individual pieces ?
