I have a line on a Reed 3C vise for $170. I didn't know if it is worth that and a two hour round trip. I'd like the idea of a big Reed to clean up.

That looks like it is good condition. Any cracks/repairs that the seller has mentioned?

RG: if it was closer i'd buy it and i don't NEED a vise. RUN and BUY IT if it doesn't have any cracks, missing parts or welds. from the two bad pictures it looks ok, but i'm old. it's also about 130-140 pounds if i recall correctly so lift with your legs or just unscrew the dynamic jaw out all the way and haul it away in two pieces.

if you have more pictures to post i can help you look for flaws, but it looks pretty good.

RG: if you posted up a thread here about it and that vise is for sale on an online ad i'd commit with the seller quickly. it's a vise on my top 20 and i own 200 vises and i don't own a REED 3c.

i'd say more but don't want to say until you get it and nothing bad either. it's a BEAST and well worth the money if you have it to spend if it's in good shape. i can't see all the mounting feet so make sure they are all there and not welded and looks like you have a great vise if you can use something that big cause it isn't any little thing that is for certain.

ok?

Any thoughts on a Holland 16? It's in great shape. They want $550 for it which I think is too much but I was thinking of making an offer. Its much closer to home.

RG: if you can get the REED 3c for $175 GET IT.

HOLLAND'S are great vises to and maybe a twin to REED, but a C series old REED is hard to beat so make the drive if you can. i have ice on my driveway right now and if i had a chance to buy that REED 3c for that price i'd be hopping in my car for a 2 or 3 hour drive HAPPILY. and as i mentioned I DON'T NEED A VISE!!

SLACK: a bead on a HOLLAND'S 16 for $100? go get it or what's stopping you? or what vise are you talking about?

Slack: $100 for a Holland's 26 is NOT A LOT, but if $100 is a lot of money for you i bet you can double or maybe triple your money once you own it if you want to sell it.

good luck

Mmmmmm let's see 8 hrs round trip for my 1C and 7 hrs round trip for my 4C shoot 2 hrs isnt far enough. A 3C that close you would already hear the diesel whine. Run don't pass go.

No hollands 16 weighs 350 pounds. He may have a hollands they weighs over 300 pounds. But it's not a # 16

I agree. It is a big one though. My woodstove only weighs 400 lbs. and the vise isn't nearly that big.

RG: i'd bet the HOLLAND'S 16 weighs no more than 150 or 160 pounds. i sold a member here my Holland's 15 a few years ago and i think it weighs less than 100 pounds. they are good vises, but you'd need a Holland's 18 to get up to around 200+ pounds. i think one of our members has a 19 and it only weighs 320 pounds (DID I REALLY SAY ONLY).

get the 3C!!!!!!!!!

or pass it on to one of us and we'll buy it!!

I paid $100 for my 3C, but the dynamic jaw is brazed at the slide. If there are no welds or brazing, $175 would be a good price.

Thank you for the encouragement. I am getting excited. My wife has not even questioned why I need to make this long drive tomorrow.

RG: sounds like you are in my time zone so if you change your mind???

if you haven't seen a 120+ pound old vise yet you are in for a TREAT or maybe some SHOCK cause it ain't no little thing. that said check it out as good as you can and i'd probably unscrew it all the way out which would tell you if the back of the slide was still square. then turn upside down and check out the screw. then look inside and see if the vise nut and everything else looks good.

good luck and since you are talking military time are you IN THE SERVICE or RETIRED?

Shift: LOL :D also sounds like it's close to you so thanks for letting the new member have an AWESOME VISE if it is. or maybe it's near me and i've been posting on GJ and not paying attention to vises as much lately that are for sale in my area.
cheers

Everybody needs a vice, I mean vise. I've actually been looking for a couple myself (in fact just posted about it, this thread inspired me to start looking again)

RG: best of luck on your drive today to pick up your REED 3C.

Fowl: the hunt might be the best part of owing some of these cool old vises. best of luck in your search!! no telling where you'll find one of these old gems at either so keep your eyes open and ask everybody you know if they have one to sell or know of one not being used.

ALL: I'm guessing you didn't read when RG mentioned he's a MARINE. if the vise is in great shape (or as advertised) i'm pretty sure he's coming home with it later today.

RG: lift with your legs if you don't want to take it apart!! good luck

RG: not sure if you are reading posts as you are heading up to look at your Reed 3c, but use your best judgement on condition because price is VERY GOOD if it's in good shape.

good luck

...and i own 200 vises...

Drives, there are groups for people with your condition.

Oh wait, you're already in one (GJ). Never mind.

RG, I hope that big Reed is a score for you today. When you return victorious, know that this will apply to any further posts by you:

The thing looks brand new. No welds, cracks or anything bent. Just a little grime and some spots with surface rust. Thanks everyone I am really glad I did this. I just need to figure out how to restore this. Shouldn't take much other than the ungainly weight of American steel.
