BLS: i know FMC mentioned your MAN CARD might be in danger when you said you thought the 6 inch Wilton was TOO DAMN BIG and i might have to agree. it's not a bad thing to have more than enough vise in your garage/shop even if you won't use it much. you know we are just kidding (or are we?) and your Wilton 450 is a vise that would work well in about 95% of shops around the world and a good choice.

VA: i think your MAN CARD MIGHT BE IN JEOPARDY TOO. NO MORE ROOM?

VISES: SNIPER?? was that what the vise that looked like a gun was?

ALL: i've seen a busted up and welded old 8 inch vise, but i've yet to see one in good shape or bought one and still hoping to one day. it will have to be pre 1960's for me to mortgage the farm for it, but one day the right one will show up.

BlS, you need that 800 to be a big brother to your 600.;)

Drive, you know I use an 8'' vise every day, and a swiveler.---Mind you, I can see that there are a few times that an 8'' jaw might be to wide for the operation, but I have found so few, and so many times those wide clampers did the trick, I just wouldn't downsize.---TJM.

The date on the slide key is 7/16, so I'm guessing the date on the side of the static jaw is the date it was cast.

I'm only commenting because it might help someone down the road. I wish Wilton was still making larger vises with the jaw bolt holes from the rear, but there's almost no chance of that, for a number of reasons.

If the vise you sold really has a 7/16 and not a 7/96, which can look a lot a like, it's because the casting sat unused for years....which isn't at all uncommon for Wilton. Many vises have been found with castings that are years older than the date stamp on the slide. All the slide date stamp tells you is roughly when they assembled it for sale.

I don't believe the stamp on the body of the vise is a date code at all. The letters are raised. That means it's part of the casting form. They aren't going to make a new one of those every day to change the date. Dates are stamped with a punch...like on the slide. Raised letters are either a part number, or something similar that doesn't change often.

The most likely possibilities are that the slide is really stamped 7/96 because they can be hard to read, or the castings got set aside accidentally and it was finally assembled in 2016.

The last thing is that if Wilton was making 600s with jaw bolt holes from the rear, they would have replacement jaws available, and they don't.

Again, I'm not knocking the vise you sold one tiny bit...that's absolutely my favorite model 600 variation. It has the best jaw configuration and the improved tail cap assembly. I drove 2.5hrs through constant snow squalls to buy one in the same configuration, but not nearly as nice :D

Has anyone seen one similar to this ? The only marking is on the bottom JMF. It is as tight as a Wilton and has a brass nut. The jaws are 3" and held on with a stud that has been peened. The handle ball ends appear to have soldier on them also.

I know for a fact that I've seen one before. That's about all I know.

My new biggest and most expensive vise and purchase haha ..
C2 date code in 96, I thought it'd be older, when did the Wilton script go to straight lettering?
It's in very good shape, will take more pictures tomorrow

Cheers

The new looking Wilton 600 with the old style jaws is intriguing. I sent Wilton an email asking about it, let's see if they answer.

BLS: thanks for taking the time to find out the information. i thought that style Wilton wasn't made any longer.

ALL: so while BLS mentions his 6 inch Wilton has the old style jaws that are screwed in from the back one of my clients is selling an 8 inch new version of the same style. since i don't shop for new vises is Wilton maybe bringing back this AWESOME version of their bigger vises?

if any of you want a scratch and dent 8 inch wilton for around $1100 shipped PM me and i'll give you details.

Hey Drives,

That 8" is actually a different, older style from the 600 we've been discussing. It has the older tailcap assembly with a small dust cover.

BLS's former 600 has the tail cap where the dust cover is huge and fits directly into the main body of the vise. The 800 you added pics of is the kind with a small dust cover that goes into the tail cap, which is partially in, and partially out of the body of the vise.

My first 600 with the older style tail cap that has a small dust cover.

Newer style with the large dust cover:

Another thing to note is that on the current models, Wilton has moved the "600" to the left side of the vise (all the other machinist vises as well).

Here's a closeup of another 600 that shows the raised casting on the main body that BLS thought might be a date code....second digit is an E on this one which makes it even less likely to be a date code. I can't imagine a manufacturer changing the mold every day, or having an insert they changed regularly. My guess is it's a mold identifier, or something similar.

This vise also had the old style jaws, new style tailcap assembly, and "600" logo on the right.

Thank you for doing this. Cancer *****, indeed. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer last December. I'm happy to say she's KICKING ITS ***. Cancer doesn't just take its toll on the person. Whole families are thrown in the tumbler.

I hope you rip your goal a new one.

GMAN: i've never actually owned a 6 or 8 inch Wilton (I DON'T OWN THE WILTON MAGNET YOU OWN) with the bolt thru jaws, but i've always liked them. not sure why Wilton quit making that design cause I personally think that is a far better look and like you say it has more jaw coverage.

ZOOMIE: great cause and almost the worst thing that can happen to a person and their family. i lost my little sister about 3 years ago to liver cancer. she was healthy one day and then sort of felt not ok and went to the Dr. and they told her she had 4th stage liver cancer and 9 months to live. that girl was a brave soul and never complained even with cheemo that extended her life to 15 months after that Dr. visit.

are you shaving the beard too or keeping that just because?

good luck and if i wasn't almost mortgaging my house again to pay for my daughter's wedding i'd send you something and i'll still try.

Yes it does [emoji4] .. Thanks for your pre purchase advise (aka prep talk telling me it's worth it haha)

This was surprisingly up for two days before I saw the listing, maybe cause it was misspelled...

Apparently gmans magnet is stronger than we thought [emoji15]

G-Man that raised number looks suspiciously like a casting date, the same style that is commonly used on engine blocks, cyl. heads etc. It's read as 7 as in the last digit of the year (1987?) , the "E" would be the fifth month (May, A = Jan. etc), and 10 the day of the month. "Matching numbers" car guys eat this stuff up, but not my cup of tea.

This is my C3, it is from 2015 or 16 for sure, I think the latter. My 1996 C3 definitely had the "small" back end, the newer one has the "big" back end. Also, a 2013 C1, it also has the big back end.mms_img6141837911.jpg20151227_135543_Richtone(HDR).jpgtapatalk_1455397074409.jpg

I thought of that, and it does remind me of what I've seen on cylinders heads, engine blocks etc.

The earlier pics BLS posted had: 11D16

I'm not sure how that would fit into the convention. I can only suspect that if Wilton was making 600s with rear bolt holes for the jaws since 2011 you'd be able to find replacement jaws on their website.

Yep, under certain circumstances the Wilton Magnet can pin them in place until I get to them. I try not to abuse that power :D

The new looking Wilton 600 with the old style jaws is intriguing. I sent Wilton an email asking about it, let's see if they answer.

Well I got an Email back from Wilton and they have switched back to the older style of jaw attachment. I did not get a date on when they did this so I sent another Email for some hopeful clarification.

Here's a copy of the text of the message.

"The jaws on the 600 Series Machinist vise do mount with the screw coming from the outside of the jaws as opposed to having the screws inserted into the face of the insert. This has been consistent with both the 600 and 800 vise for a long time. Thanks."

I know the pictures on the website for the 600 are of a 450 bullet so it doesn't show this.

454ragtop, I do agree that casting look like a date code but I think it is day / month / year , not year / month / day. I have seen it both ways on car parts.

This would line up with blsnelling's vise having a casting date of 11 D (April) 16 and a keyway date of 7/16 (June 2016)

G-ManBart, why do you say Wilton does not have replacement jaws for the 600 with back of the insert retention, because of a picture? Most places when I look up 600 jaws they show a generic picture of jaws that doesn't change no matter what size.

Wilton shows 2903280 as the replacement jaws for the current 600 although the drawing shows the screws going through the face.

For the C3 Wilton shows 2907370 again with a drawing of the going through the face of the jaws.

Looking at ereplacement parts website for 2903280 shows an actual picture of these jaws on an assumed 1" grid and they are 6 squares long and attach from the back.

These jaws are supposed to fit ALL 600's from both before 1998 and 1998 and up plus C3s from before 1984.
We know this is incorrect because somewhere in this time period 600's were made with front of jaw face screw attachment.

Ereplacement shows C3's got a new part number 2907370 for 1984 and up and 1998 and up. The picture are the jaws with through the serrated face of the jaws and the grid shows them being 6 squares long.

There are some obvious problems with some of Wilton's website pictures and manuals.

Thanks Mike, I am pretty sure you married her because you knew she was an *** KICKER!
I wish your Wife, you and the rest of your family the best, we are gaining on it!!!

ZOOMIE: great cause and almost the worst thing that can happen to a person and their family. i lost my little sister about 3 years ago to liver cancer. she was healthy one day and then sort of felt not ok and went to the Dr. and they told her she had 4th stage liver cancer and 9 months to live. that girl was a brave soul and never complained even with cheemo that extended her life to 15 months after that Dr. visit.

My best to you and your family SIR, I hate that disease more than anything else I can think of...

I figure I'll auction off the beard at the event, maybe get a few extra $$$.
Me and a few buddies grew the BEARDS for "MOVEMBER", another cancer charity, but we just put up our own cash, but it was kind of like an auction to see which one could make the others donate more, it was fun and I've got some buddies that are pretty pissed off at cancer and they "put our money where or mouths were"!
Our 'little donation pool" was quite impressive for some old (and very generous) school chums, LOL!

I'd gladly cut off my right arm with a "pair of pliers and a blowtorch" to get rid of the disgusting disease! (see if anyone gets my movie reference...?)

Take care guys, Thanks a bunch for being cool and sharing your stories!

Take Care!

Many of you have been rooting for me in my quest to remove the swivel jaw locking pin on my Reed 406. I am proud to announce that it came out this afternoon with the generous help of fellow member jziggy.
The technique we used was from Carla (thanks again Carla) involving making a puller with a piece of pipe, some washers, and a half inch-13 grade 8 bolt.

You won't find many better vises than a Reed 406. I think they are outstanding!
