anyone on here familiar with cb radios and use them or use to use them?

for the garage sale fanatics and flea market scavengers, some of these radios can score you big dollars that most people care less to look at.

keep your eyes open for:

cobra 2000 gtl
president radios
cobra 29 , 148 , 140, 142, 146
uniden grant, madison, eisenhower,

astatic silver eagle microphones, astatic echomax 2000, d-104

amplifiers

believe it or not, cb radio is still in and its quite popular with radio heads. find one of those on the list and you could make at least $50 each

I'd love to have a CB in my car, but I've yet to figure out an antenna that isn't ridiculously obvious, can be mounted w/o damaging the car, AND have reasonable perfomance.

I've got 2 or 3 cobra's and 1 from radio shack which is actually one of the best radio's i've ever used. It's just not fancy at all(no features). I don't have one mounted in my truck, as there's no good place to mount it. If I'd ever buy one with a weather radio in it, then I'd find a place to put it.

my boss at a previous job had a Cobra w/ a weather radio in his pickup. He never used it, the antenna was broke off. I tried to buy it from him a couple times, but he wouldn't sell. One day someone stole it out of his truck in the parking lot in front of the store(it was in a strip mall, but parked in plain sight). I told him he should've sold it to me, at least he would've gotten some cash. He laughed & was like Yep, i guess I should have.

I've got an old President, a Lincoln I think I haven't seen it in awhile. Found it at a flea market it worked for a while then quit working. Took it to a electronics shop to get fixed and he said that I would be better off putting the $20 into a new radio... I don't remember what it had for options. I later bought a smaller Cobra with no options, just basic radio, volume and squelch. Now I am going to see if I can find it....

After some research, I believe it is an "Honest Abe".

I had some CB's in cars years ago. I haven't had one permanently installed for over 15 years. I do have a Radio Shack unit that was worked on a bit to modulate at a bit higher power ;)
I have it connected to a cigarette lighter plug and a Willson mag mount antenna. I throw it in a vehicle if I'm going to be doing much highway driving. There's alot of people driving the interstates with CB's and it has value for help/local directions/highway reports/smokey reports and general listening.
Not enough (anyone) in my circle of friends, nor enough highway driving, for me to permanent mount one. I'd consider a permanent mount if the antenna was not such an eyesore. Yes, there are hidden antennas and small antennas but if I'm going to have a radio I'm not going to saddle it with a wimpy antenna.

unidendirect.com is a good place to get your first cb or a great one for the price! i own so many radios i can't possibly list them all. all of which were $129 and up!

you don't need an antenna to listen to the weather with these radios. if you wish to talk to someone with the radio you better get a good antenna.
ask around to some people that know about cb radios and with the weather channels out of reach (a few are usually) you can have them tuned to tv channels and listen to fox news if you wanted to.

I used to talk on them all the time way back in Jr. High. All the boys in a 20 mi radius had them and we talked each night. I think it was the precurser to "chatting" via computer! Most has basestations, but some would get in their dad's truck and use that.

I have a Cobra 25 w/ weather in my truck, but it's too big. I think I'll move to one of the smaller Unidens like a 510. I had one once and it was a solid radio.

I have an old Radio Shack 3-channel, 3watt walkie-talkie that I keep in my work car should I want to monitor channel 19.

My neighbor back then used to have a massive Moonraker directional antenna and a 4,000 watt amp. His truck pushed about 2,000 watts and had to have an extra battery and alternator. When he hit the mike, the truck would die if at idle! I wonder how bad that was for his health considering how worked up folks get about cellphone radiation!

alot of amps out there these days and they are easy to come by. moonraker will definitely do the trick on any terrain with any radio.

don't give your cobra 25 up for a POS uniden 510. bring it to a shop and have it tweeked. mine swings upwards of 45 watts with just a screw driver turn and a power mic.

Agree, the Cobra will out talk a Uniden all day, and is "tweakable". I just need something more compact. I wonder if you can still get those TriStar 120's that had the hi/lo channels built in?

Regarding amps, I still remember my bud's Elkin with six giant tubes in there glowing...

if you go off-roading, CB is a "must have". if you do a lot of freeway driving, CB is pretty handy when listening to the truck drivers pointing out where the cops/speed traps are.

i bought everything new from Fry's less than $100 include the radio, coaxle cable, 4 feet whip, swr meter. no matter how good the radio is, it's only as good as the properly tuned antenna.

i think you need a magnum 257 dual final radio. smaller then a cobra 25 but way more features and pack a serious punch!
