PLEASE everyone that purchased this box ... take a look at the following photos.

Story line: Purchased this box, along with a wheeled bottom at HD on 2-5-17. I've been busy so I haven't had much time to organize either box. i DID get a chance to fill the top about 1/3rd full. This is important to remember ... only 1/3rd full. Today I decide to organize and fill the box so I start picking through tools to add to the box. I walk over to the box and notice that the top drawers have started to sag towards the center. Take a look:

ztyuc3.jpg

I removed the top drawers and took this pic:

ja9xqu.jpg

All but one spot weld has failed and only one is holding the whole front of the top mini drawers. The metal L-bracket has started to bend out of shape, causing the sagging of the top shelves. All of this with the box only 1/3rd filled!

I'm calling HD to see what can be done. I posted this as a warning ... remove your top shelves and check your spot welds.

There is a review at Home Depot that had the same problem and offers a fix:

Con: Not recommended for commercial or flat rate shops, barley acceptable for home use only. 1) Top box is next to worthless, had less then 30 lbs divided by the six (6) top draws and noticed a pronounced sag (1/4” drop) in the middle Upon inspecting, the center support is made of the thin skin metal 22 gage and is a “L” bracket w/ a ¼” lip. The lip is held in place w/ two spot welds at each end, allowing it to pull away (bend down). After using a carpenters clamp and bending the “L” bracket back in place, I placing (4) 1/8” pop rivets in the “L” bracket, yes there is just enough room to do this, it make the “L” bracket snug against the ceiling of the top shelf, however the metal is so thin, it still has a 5/32” flex with little thumb pressure.

I'm glad to say that I couldn't find these issue on my box. The drawers do not sag at all. However, I can say that quality control is hit or miss with Husky. I'd still use the the top drawers with caution. Still feels solidly built.

I'm glad I read this before I loaded the top drawers. Two pop rivets and a mending plate later and I hope I will not see any sagging.

Ordered 2 Husky top chests @ $49 and was going to cancel after Dud's post on the flimsy upper half drawers. Yom1963 post with the mending plate is the best solution BEFORE it begins to sag and the "L" shaped metal deforms. The flimsiness begins at the flexy flat surface followed by the flimsy "L" brace that is unsupported to hold too many drawers. Good design but poor execution. I used Husky roller cabinets before and know what to expect of the 100 lb rated drawers. Great home garage tool storage. Well I start the cancellation process at HD when I check out the boxes waiting for me. HD had filled my order with two limited edition black textured finish 5-drawer lower roller cabinets for $49 each! This is what I took home for my future workbench:

Both the top chest and cabinet roller end in "921", so you got a great deal on their mistake!

During pickup, I thought it was just a good gesture substitution for incorrect inventory management. HD had quantity of 3 top chests when I ordered two 9-drawer top chests @ $49 each. As you stated, the SKUs are very similar for them to pull the wrong item. I'm not sure whether I can get the third one....kind of ymmv

is that the bottom of the top till where that mending plate is shown?
EDIT
Oh, okay, so apparently it is the bottom of the top till.
OK, Brain Froze once again. Thought that would look pretty Bush league.
But I guess your just putting a drawer liner over/in the top.
Now it's clean looking.
Say are most of you just taking a chance, or are you beefing them up before there is an issue?
I'm pretty sure this will be put on a roller, and set up next to my lathe.
So those 4 drawers, will likely be assigned to squares, Mics, small screwdrivers, maybe a few odd special drill bits, rulers, and the like. Y'a know lighter stuff.
Think I may end up selling the lowes top and bottom deal we got a while back.
The top chest is still in the box, the bottom is unused.

Are yall able to pull them up on the website? when i search it says product is not sold in stores!

From Home Depot support:

Hi, it looks like this 26 in. W 9-Drawer Tool Chest is a store exclusive item and only able to be bought in a Home Depot store. Unfortunately we do not sell it with online stock for purchase. If you are unable to see the store inventory or price it is most likely either not a stocked item in your area or no longer available for purchase from Homedepot.com. I would advise you visit or contact your local Home Depot store for pricing and availability. Please follow the steps below to localize your Homedepot.com:

1. Localize Homedepot.com using your zip code (My Store Location: Change)

2. Choose the store where you want to pick up the item (Make this my Store)

We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you in the future. Thank you for shopping Home Depot!

PS - If you use a zip code like bubinga had displayed, such as 44646, you will see that there is still inventory in other areas of the country.

I'll be leaving the Husky as is. Won't be modding / reinforcing those slides, but I really never intended to place heavy things in the top drawers in the first place. I just hope the bottom drawers are strong. The box is already so heavy, the designers should have used common sense in the first place

I feel silly with the fact I didn't think about that before the "big" lift, :headscrat

And I usually remove the drawers anytime I need to lift something like this. May be I was too anxious?

Could have avoided the drama that evening....darn :lol_hitti

If you take off the drawers, that saves about 30 lbs, making the cabinet around 60 lbs to lift.

So I was waiting to meet a guy in the parking lot to by some tools off Craigslist. Had time to kill wandered around the store.

I happened to go by the tool box section in the front of the store. They had the version in this thread sitting on the floor with a tag that indicated it was not on clearance. However they had the limited edition heavy duty one in box near it that had $84 on it originally $119 in Metallic Silver. So I said decent deal, not the greatest but what the hell and threw it in a cart. Rang up as $42 :shocking:. Needless to say I do believe I had a bit more swagger in my walk back to my truck lol.

Have to say its a nice box. No damage on mine Other then where they Spot welded the husky panel to the lid. They could have cleaned it up a bit better.

*Edit* I should note mine is only the 5 Drawer also However all of the stuff that came with it states 27" even though the website and box said 26". I think it might have a 5hp motor that runs on 120v too lol.

$42 isn't bad at all for the 5 drawer.

I was able to get one of the 9 drawer boxes for $49.
I'm vevy pleased with my purchase. It's a lot of box for the money.

Just picked up one of these. Computer showed no inventory anywhere in the area but spotted their floor model up on a rack. Scanned at $49 and they took another $10 off for some scratches on the top. Total $39. :) Thanks OP for the heads up on these.
