if you want to be all legit about it, you would technically need an underwriters cert., footing inspection, blah blah. Just do it. I won't tell....

Probably not for the lift its self but certainly for the electrical. But doing so may open a can of worms for you if you go that route. In good conscience I can't say you shouldn't go down that road but I can say are you sure you want to go down that road.

Pretty much I have nothing to hide as everything is up to code to include electrical. I know for sure I have to add a 220v to the box. thank you for the reply

Has nothing to do with hiding something. But it might have everything to do with how they view a lift. That's what I would be concerned about. You can always just call and ask the building department and see what they say.

To answer the question: Yes, almost certainly- SOME kind of permit/inspection would be required if you ask.

Question really is "should I ask?"

I know that if I follow the building code, the electric code and the documented lift installation instructions, I am "OK" with my insurance. I dont need to pay the county $200 for them to say 'agree'.

I see the 'insurance boogieman' comments from time to time- I reject that. Read your policy, talk to your agent if concerned. DONT just assume it is a real issue.

I don't like the added financial burden of taxes because that's a load that stays with you forever. Most things that are inspected will add taxable value to your property due to the permit processing. I'm fine with it for adding new square footage, but personally feel what I do with the inside of my property is my own business.

That said, I would either hire licensed contractors and or do some research so you can closely follow established codes.

I will be hiring a contactor to install the lift in the garage that was recommended by the company whom is selling me the lift from Bendpak. I also asked the company if I need to obtain a permit to install the lift in a residential property to be use a hobby and he told me I do not need it , But he is making money out of it and I will like other input on it.

Just sent you a PM - I live in your town and built my garage last year. NO permit is need for the lift or the electrical if you are just adding a circuit to an existing structure.

IF you are adding a sub panel to a new structure they will require permits and a licensed electrician on the Orange County approved list to do the work. I fought the county as I wanted to do my own electrical but a recent law passed a few years ago prevents a homeowner from doing any "New Service" on their own.

Depends on if you would expect them to cover the replacement cost if the place burned. Or if you would expect them to cover liability if it killed someone.

This has been hashed and rehashed.........if your running a business ( off the books) out of your home you have no insurance cover for liability or contents.
If your a hobby shop the normal home owners coverage for a outbuilding and contents is 10% of the main dwelling. Want more coverage for the hobby shop you need a rider for an agreed amount.
Call them on the lift.........they may just cancel all the coverage based on its out of the norm and your likely running a business under the table....true or not. Or sell you a business policy $$$$.

My table saw, lathe and mill are in the basement not in the shop (out building) . That changes the coverage as far true hobby and outbuilding content coverage limits.

I have a lift in my shop that not many know about... especially the insurance company!
I threw the above comment about notifying the insurance company just to see the response.
I am happy to see the way the reply's are going on this thread!
I have read on lift install's you probably should ask about needing a permit and should ask your insurance company about it.
Uh.... only if you are looking for the nicest/biggest feather bed in heaven and want to be the perfect angel!

The detached garage already has a sub panel which is attached to another panel located in the main house two car garage which is connected to the Mail panel down in the basement. So what you telling me is that I don't need no permit for any of the work I be doing to the garage. In that case I am super excited to move forward.

In Newburgh, I would think you would need: footing inspection and electrical inspection. Both of those need a permit application completed. likely just by the contractor. You may need an engineering stamp a footing drawing.

I live in New Windsor and built a garage two years ago. They had asked me if I was installing a lift at my variance meeting and when I said I wasn't sure they just moved on. I am assuming you wouldn't need one. Good luck.
