This philosophy sometimes pertains to my vise purchases. But in case anybody missed the update, the seller ignored my email and text messages, waited a day, and then doubled the price. At that point, I am OUT.

Shiftless: You said you wanted me to talk you out of buying that vise with the excuse that it "took too long to drive there and it costs too much". Well, I saw right through that ruse and gave you permission to go get it. (Don't tell your wife I did that.) I've used that reasoning on myself and ended up with some nice vises. (Don't tell my wife I did that.)

Does anyone know why they load the gears at an angle instead of perfectly level?

The 'block' on the high side looks to be part of the gear, that would lead me to believe they used whatever block they had for the low side and hence the slope. Purely a guess though.
I just picked up one like that, it has Taiwan on the bottom. I am thinking it's 1980's / 1990's.
The more I look at the pix (at the time I took them I was mostly concerned with staying in my lane!) the odder those things look. On closer inspection, the 'blocks' are crank pins, and the gear teeth don't go all the way around the circumference. Maybe part of something like a hammer mill??

I probably wouldn't stick an anvil and pipe vise on it, but I might have to do a large brake drum stand eventually for one of my vises

I've been working on an "any" setting for the Wilton magnet. This weekend was the first test run.
Yesterday's pile...Craftsman 3 1/2", Desmond Simplex 41S, Wilton C0:
Today's pile...Wilton 450SJ and Reed 104R.
Finished restoring the C0 this morning. It was tack welded to the table, but came off pretty easily with a grinder and cutting disc....then just smoothed the weld areas with a flap disc.
Yesterday's pile...Craftsman 3 1/2", Desmond Simplex 41S, Wilton C0:

Taken apart to move inside. I'm standing between jaws with the spindle just out of the nut. The space between towers is 20", The spindle nut has 5" of threads. Weight of the vise is 265lbs. For those who may know, are those inserts original? To me they look not very h-d. thanks

Congrats G-Man. I see you have discovered my favorite local industrial Auction. I almost went after the Desmond and the Craftsman but in the end decided that someone else needed them more than I. I guess you were it. Looking forward to seeing them all refinished. The Wilton came out nice.
Thanks...I actually have a couple of friends at work who are looking for inexpensive, decent vises, so that's why I bid on the Craftsman and Desmond. I wanted the cart with the Wilton to keep the cart and use it as an assembly/painting table for vises. I actually used it for that when I did the Wilton....worked nicely.
I figure I'll keep the table, sell the three vises, help out a buddy or two, and make enough so the table will be free
Picked this Reed 4C up today in New Jersey. Seller was a nice guy who got it for free when the company he worked for brought in a roll back dumpster to clean out the maintenance shop. He saved them money on the load taking this and a nice anvil. Hate to see a nice piece of Americana end up as scrap. I also want to thank Drive for some very helpful advice as I was agonizing over this for about 72 hours. I'll take a few better pictures in the morning. No cracks or welds.

Outlaw, that shouldnt make any difference should it? I have the Athol pictured here a couple of days ago, Mike has the Baby, A nice vise.
Im trying to figure how I can take advantage of mr meat.
Do i get a "you ****" today or is it not cool enough? Got a brand new C0 and a brand new C1 today. Gave around half price for the C0 and got the C1 for free.

Here you meatsis.....choke on this beautiful Athol. Handle is straight. It has the lockdown foot but needs the bolt. Jaws are well defined....

Found a 1-1/2" jaw clamp mount (not pictured) and this 2-1/2" jaw clamp mount, both on Ebay. I was surprised how big the 2-1/2" is, was expecting something smaller. Need to find a 2", there's one on CL about an hour away from me, but the $30. price seems a little steep considering it has a chipped jaw and chipped anvil. Does anyone know it they made any larger than the 2-1/2"?

Im trying to figure out how many old ladies Meat had to sleep with to get the price he paid for those babys he bought, and yes I said babys, as in more than one.
What do you do when your friend sends you a text saying his hoarder grandpa is selling off his NIB Wilton bullet hoard of over 20 pieces plus a bunch of older ones off in one big bundle for $5000? Hes telling me pieces of info at a time here and has already said theres at least 2 new C2s in the lot. Im going nuts here!
