I have a feeling part of the price drops are due to the advancement of cordless sliding miter saws, maybe not. I tend not to buy old technology if something better, or makes more sense to invest in is out. Unnless a good deal of course.

I don't know if this is a good deal or not. Haven't been looking at DeWalt corded saws for some time now.

The slider will perform wider crosscuts by a large margin.

10" slider has always been my preference. 12" slider is nice if you have it set up in a permanent location, it's a pain to move.

I had a Dewalt 12" non-slider for about 3-4 years. Got smashed by a tree that fell on the shed years ago. Wife surprised me with a new Bosch 10" SCMS and at first I was worried about the 10" vs 12", but after about 5 seconds of use I was in heaven.

I've been reserving a prospective buy on a Miter Saw like this on a future project. Though, I've never considered the sliding feature and instead am trying to consider the Dewalt DW713 (from Amazon) instead.

No XPS light, and that's 50% of the reason to buy the DeWalt Saws. I have the 10 and 12 and the XPS is a must have, much better than a laser.

Agreed, I wouldnt even consider a saw with a laser after having the light on my dewalt 12" saw.

717 is the best dewalt saw in my opinion due to the bevel locking setup, I paid 325 for a display model last year. Hella good saw

Good deal! Did you find a 50 off code? I can't seem to find a current one.

@ Amazon or Lowe's

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001AIX5OO/?tag=atomicindus08-20

https://www.lowes.com/pd/DEWALT-10-in-15-Amp-Dual-Bevel-Sliding-Compound-Miter-Saw/1179355

Seems like a decent deal. Tempted to pick one up to replace my 10" non-sliding Hitachi. This saw's been around for a while - is it soon to be replaced?

Must have missed out on this... The Amazon link is showing $498 and Lowes is showing $349, but not available for store pickup or delivery. :(

Since this deal looks to be gone, I'm looking at the DWS780, https://www.amazon.com/DEWALT-DWS780-12-Inch-Sliding-Compound/dp/B00540JS7C/ - how does that compare?

not finding much of a difference between this one (dws779) and the dws780, and actually i don't see a 10 inch saw offered by dewalt on lowe's site anymore... however this one is 399, would be 349 with a 50 off coupon.. good deal.

Huge difference between the two!

DWS779 = no XPS system

DWS780 = XPS system

Is the XPS system worth the extra money? Is there a 10" version by chance with the XPS system available?

I have a feeling the DWS780 is going to be MORE than overkill for my needs, but wanted to see what others thought about it or if they had other suggestions.

is it worth it? i'd say it's worth the price if you would use it alot. been cutting wood for years without one and i'm doing just fine. i might get one for my saw just to tinker with, and it'll help speed things up if i have to hurry the work i'm doing.. but definitely not a necessity.

i don't know if you've owned a dewalt saw or not, but i can tell you that these dewalts are cake to square up. i've spent hours on my previous saws and never got them perfect... got every angle squared up on my new dewalt in about 15 mins.

Is the XPS a good system and worth a few bucks? YES!

Is it worth the $250 additional price tag? NO!

If you want a line, is the Dewalt XPS the best thing out there? I am going to say when it comes to miter saws, it is dead accurate and idiot proof. I won't bore you with details, but a laser is only telling you where specific point on the blade will cut, not the entire blade! XPS shows where the entire blade will actually cut.

There is no Dewalt 10" that comes with XPS at this time. If you want one, you need to add the feature. It is possible and easy. Some come "ready" to accept the part DWS7085 light, as long as you can turn a screwdriver with no other modifications. They are:

DW713 Type 1 ($220)
DW717 Type 1 and 2 ($349 at Lowes)

Your biggest issue will be finding the light. Dewalt stopped manufacturing it as an add-on accessory. There is still New Old Stock (NOS) out there, but you need to grab it quick.

Others have modified non-compatible units. See here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=308500&highlight=Dewalt

Most of my cutting will be during the day, not after hours. :)

it is legit, that is where I ordered mine (as did others). The retail packaged light kit is no longer made, so this is ordering the parts as replacement parts. They will just come in a brown cardboard box.

Nope, unfortunately probably not going to do much better than the $55 or so shipped.

I'll be one to jump OFF the XPS system bandwagon when it comes to sliders. Been using Dewalt miter saws for well over 10 years and think they are a great saw.

IMO the only way having such a system would be really helpful would be when using a non slider miter saw. To start with, anyway you look at it, you need to mark the board your cutting(unless you doing lots of reps and set up a stop).

With a slider you can pretty much mark the board anywhere, set it on the saw, bring the blade down sliding it to the mark and aligning the two. With a non-slider, you can't do the same. The blade makes it's initial contact with board at one fixed point. Your mark on the board needs to within a small length to align the two and get an accurate cut.

Probably one of the major reasons I always recommend a slider over a fixed saw. It makes aligning your cut mark to the blade a heck of a lot easier. Given all this, the XPS system would be a great addition for a non-slider, but more of an unnecessary feature for a slider...

As always..JMO.

I will just add, that I own a trim carpentry business (25+ years) and wouldn't be without a laser or shadow in this case. I trimmed for many years without one, and then many years with one (makita LS1013L). I bought this saw specifically for the "laser". Either way works, but once you get used to one, hard to go back to not using one.

Just my opinion too.

ha, let us know if you get it or more likely how long before your order was cancelled.

Got it on my saw and it works great! Tracking info was accurate. Be careful installing the light, stripped out one of the 4 holes with little torque... very accurate!
