I found a vintage 10 drawer Craftsman tool box in the garbage, but it's missing the lock. Would I be able to purchase an aftermarket lock for this vintage 10 drawer Craftsman toolbox? I will attach a photo I found on the internet of the exact one.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't post them on the original thread, but it's outside in my truck. Here are a few angles of the missing lock.

Thanks for that information, when you say length of housing, cam is that referring to the lock diameters or is it measured on the toolbox and would you know the best place to buy the replacement lock?

Thanks,
Mark

Length is the depth of the lock, how long it protrudes into the case. Cam is the throw or how it turns and operates. Most of the ones readily available at big box stores have an adjustable throw.

Most of those tool box cam locks are known as double 'D' style (two flats on the hole). You need to measure the hole size and the reach needed (lock barrel length).

Pictured is an assortment of locks, from my collection, that will fit most tool boxes.

There is a slot below and an attachment above the lock slide into, to keep the drawer below and the top above locked.

Contact waterloo they are the oem for those tool boxes, they are also 100x more helpful than sears their customer service is excellent. They are often cheaper than sears for parts also.

Sears sells replacement locks for their tool boxes. Most of the stores have them in stock.
When I looked they only had a 3 lock set top middle and bottom cabinets. Got the bottom lock straight from Waterloo.

Totally agree. I needed a bottom lock for my Craftsman rollaway at work. I gave our clerk every number on that drawer label and the dolts at Sears could not figure out which cabinet it was.I kept telling her to call Waterloo and finally she gave up with Sears and called Waterloo. And they only wanted to know 29" bottom cabinet? That was it. End of story. When possible I always try and get my Sears parts from the vendor.

The only number I could find was a 12-76 on the right side of the top. Would this number be any help in finding the correct locking mechanism?

I also found this sticker when opening the top and thought it would be perfect for this forum.

12-76 is the manufactured date.
I don't think the model number is stamped on the box. It was probably on a paper label that was removed. If there are liners in the drawers, you could lift them up to see if the PO'er stuck the label underneath.

I see that you have the retaining clip for the lock. I wonder if the lock itself was put in one of the drawers. With moving and flipping the lock might have migrated under the drawers. Pull the bottom drawer and see what's hiding in the bottom of the box. That's where I store extra parts I don't want to lose.

Right. On the Sears site there are suggestions about where to look for the model number. It is often on a label inside the top right drawer. Waterloo would not be that fussy and just the width, I assume it is 29", and the fact that it is a top cabinet should be enough. They have used the same locks for decades. If there is more info needed, Waterloo will tell you. While the OP has them on the phone, he might want to order a couple of draw slide retainer clips. If you remove a drawer, they tend to break and they are only a buck and change and he can get them for the same shipping cost with the lock. People always seem to be looking for locks and those clips.

That box you pulled from the trash is in better shape than 75% of the tool boxes on Craigslist. Fantastic find!

Thanks, I only have a Craftsman 3 drawer toolbox from the mid 1980's and needed more storage for my tools, so this will be put to use.
