Thank you!
The jaws are 1-1/2" and it weighs 1lb 2oz.
I can't find another mark on it...

Take Care!
Mike

Thanks for the info. I like an 8" behemoth as much as anyone and hope to one day have one. But these little guys have a lot of uniqueness and character. Even though exposed screw may not be everyone's top choice, I have a fondness for them because of their look and character.

The J Ware you got is a real gem.

Is this flare above the horseshoe new? Not sure I've seen that before.2017-03-22 21.44.38.jpg

It's not new at all. That question seems to come up regularly. I have had two 600s from the 1990s that had it. The newer one had a 1999 date stamp and the older had a 1990 date stamp.

Picked this little guy up on Craigslist the other day. Will be bead blasting and lightly polishing the raw surfaces and powdercoating the rest.

Here is a new 6" Wilton for sale in NY. I did not know they were making the 6 x 1-1/2 x 1" jawed heavy vises. The Wilton website does not show this pic's of this model 600S.

https://newyork.craigslist.org/jsy/tls/6054478003.html

$650 brand new.

We had a discussion about it a few weeks back, vises with the older style "big jaw" that bolts in from the back were showing up with new dates (2016?) on the slide. I emailed the company and they confirmed that but couldn't give a date of when they changed back. One problem is that every Bullet machinists vise shows a picture of a 450 no matter what size jaws it has.

Sandman: thanks for posting more of your awesome collection. can you tell me if that is a 1 or 2 inch plate bolted on top of a cast iron stand or was it made in one pour for that RR stand? any pictures up under the top plate might be helpful cause i'm working on a stand that might look similar and weigh about half that much at 500-600 pounds.

ALL: another member brought this to me today and it's a cute little version of the CHINESE WONDER VISE. it's got 3.5 inch jaws and maybe only weighs 20-25 pounds, but it's missing a few parts.

anybody have one of these laying around that is broken and maybe want to sell me the parts or maybe ship me the parts i need so i can have a machinist make them please PM or email me.

it's missing the swivel base and the nuts and bolts that make that work. it's also missing the top pipe jaw and the middle 2 pipe jaws. other than that it seems to work like it was meant to.

thanks in advance.

I was in San Francisco recently and toured the WWII submarine USS Pampanito, which is a museum ship moored near Fisherman's Warf. I noticed this "Chinese Wonder Vise" in the engine room. I did not see any markings on it, so I can't tell if it is original or a replacement of foreign origin.

That is a USA made Sawyer, not a "Chinese Wonder Vise", FYI...

:+1: on the Sawyer Zoom.---You can look at the quality of the vise and see the USA craftsmanship, even if NuTYP wasn't on it.

Wanted to post these three vises, not mine by any means, but these are EBay vises.---One has been sold.---I have to post them so I can include them in The vise index or they will be lost maybe forever when EBay deletes them from their pages.

One is a Canadian made, Smart, Endurance post vise.---First one of those I've seen.---I have two bench vises made by the Smart Tool Co.

The other post vise is a German Peddinghaus.---7 7/8'' jaws, 185 lbs..

The third one is a UNIQUE MANTLE & CO. MACHINIST VISE.---Sold for $1404.99, with $50.00 shipping in my direction.---Only one of those I've ever seen.

Here's one more of the UNIQUE MANTLE VISE.

I apologize for the pic quality but taking a pic of a pic will produce worse pics.

VA: that Mantle vise is COOL!!

Zoomie:
800 Wilton is looking good and I bet it's only going to get better with the new parts. do you shave your head after it sells or before and which type of cancer is the charity the funds are going to?

ALL: so since my vise (NOT THE CHINESE WONDER VISE) only says NuTYP on it could it be that Sawyer wasn't part of the making of it? it does have the scalopped tops of the towers like all Sawyers do. any of you wise patent and catalog guys have any information you might want to post you have my permission.

Drive, yours was assembled on Friday afternoon, and the boys kept seeing that flashing beer sign across the street.---It gets real hot in those foundries.---Just didn't have time to put Sawyer on the cast.--- The supervisor was even leading the charge.---It's still a Sawyer.

They use to say something to that effect about us VDOT workers.---"Be sure your not holding anything heavy at 4:30, like an anvil".:D

Drives, your stand project sounds similar to what I'm going to be building. Probably more in the 7-800# range though.
Also if you aren't in a rush you could always send your new arrival home with me when I'm down. Make the missing parts and get it back to you.

My interpretation from Kevin'scomment is that it is new, as in appears never used untouched. That's a cool find !

trijeff asked if the raised triangle above the collar was a new feature...different from Kevin's comment that the vise he posted was new.

Yes, it's RustOleum Hammered Verde Green. This was the first vise I restored, and I should have put on another coat to get a more hammered finish, but the nice thing with hammered paint is it's easy to touch up, or add another coat later. On subsequent restorations I found the technique to really get a hammered finish...live and learn. :)

Drives, you asked....

The NuTyp Vise has a tangled history. I am in the process of working it out. Here is what I have so far:

The original NuTyp Vise was patented by E.W. Fulton on 17 Jan 1922 - Patent #1404109. This vise is a direct descendant of the Reed Patent Vise, patented by Hiram Reed on Feb 16, 1904 - Patent #752260.

The NuTyp vise was originally sold under the name F&R Combination Vise, by Fulton Machine & Vise of Lowville, NY. (F&R as in Fulton & Reed) Here is a link to the announcement:
https://books.google.com/books?id=nXFIAQAAMAAJ&pg=RA1-PA75

Best I can date this announcement is late 1921 early 1922.

In an early 1922 edition of the Engineering Directory, the F&R Combination VIse is listed as being produced by Boker Cutlery & Hardware Co Inc., New York and Fulton Machine & VIse of Lowville. Here is the URL:
https://books.google.com/books?id=Oz08AQAAMAAJ
- the Google book is locked due to copyright, but I have the images to support this somewhere.

Again. late 1921 early 1922 a seriws of announcements:
1921 15 Dec Iron Age, Volume 108: Atlas Vise has been incorporated.
1921 22 Dec American Machinist: Atlas Vise Company has been incorporated
1921 29 Dec Iron Trade Review, Volume 69: Atlas Vise organization will be completed shortly.
1922 26 Jan American Machinist Fulton Machine and Vise now made by Atlas Vise Co.
1922 26 Jan NuTyp first manufactured by Fulton Machine and Vise Co of Lowville, NY, under name of F&R Combination Special Vise is now made by Atlas Vise of Lowville, NY. and sold by Boker Cutlery and Hardware.

1922 marks the first mention of the NuTyp vise. Here is the URL supporting thr Atlas/Boker connection:
https://books.google.com/books?id=UeM-AQAAMAAJ&pg=PA157

According to the American Machinist of 3 March, 1922, Fulton Machine and Vise Company, Lowville, N.Y. has gone into bankruptcy.

1924 Fulton sells business, moves to Oswego, NY and joins The Oswego Tool Company.
http://www.fultonhistory.com/Proces... Oswego Daily Times June-Aug 1924 - 0508.pdf

Benjamin W. Dow, who has for the last five years been works manager of the Oswego Tool company, has tendered his resignation to take effect at the convenience of the company.

The Oswego Tool company has been particularly fortunate in securing the services of Edwin W. Fulton of Lowville, N. Y., who will take over Mr, Dow's duties as soon as convenient.

Mr. Fulton controls the Atlas Vise Company, Inc., and the Velox Vise Company, Inc., of Lowville, N. Y,, and by this connection the Oswego Tool Company acquires the rights to manufacture and sell the celebrated Velox quick action machinists bench vise and the Nutyp combination pipe and bench vise, and the business of these companies will be transferred to, Oswego.

The Velox vise is a patented quick action bench vise used by the larger manufacturers where speed of production is essential and the NuTyp vise meets with a ready sale in garages, repair shops and homes where a combination pipe and machinist vise is needed.

In addition to the above patented vises, under Mr. Fulton's direction the Oswego Tool company will also manufacture a line of standard machinists bench vises in a full range of sizes of stationary and swivel base types. It is estimated that the addition of these lines will necessitate the employment of at least 50 new men land increase the sales of the company materially.

The Oswego Tool company already manufactures combination vises and is thoroughly equipped to manufacture these additional lines.

Mr. Fulton, who will shortly become a permanent resident of Oswego, was for many years with the Prentice Vise company, who are one of the largest manufacturers of vises of this type and was six years With the Bagley & Sewall company of Watertown.

Up to three years ago Mr. Fulton was connected with the Fulton Vise and Machine company of Lowville, which has recently been reorganized the Lowville Vise company.

In 1930 Fulton forms International Nutyp Tool Corporation (I.N.T.) - Oswego Tool Company is bought by INT. INT now produces the NuTyp Vise, the Golden Age of the NuTyp.

1932 6 Dec Fulton received Patent 1,890,114 for Addition of Third Jaw Set, not assigned;
application date 29 Aug 1930 residence Lowville.

In 1935 this article appears in a number of Fulton County newspapers:
1935 Bankruptcy Notice:
UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT for the Northern District of New York in the Matter of International NuTyp Tool Corporation, Bankrupt.
To the creditors of the International NuTyp Tool Corporation, of the City of Oswego, County of Oswego and District aforesaid, a Bankruptcy.
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the 23rd day of January 1935 the said International NuTyp Tool Corporation was ???? adjudicated a bankrupt and that the first meeting and hearing of its creditors will be held at the office of Avery H. Wright referee in Bankruptcy Room 3, Oswego City Savings Bank Building, Oswego N.Y. on the 14th day of March, 1935 at 10 o'clock A.M. at which time the said creditors ??? attend, prove their claims, approve a Trustee, examine the bankrupt and transact such other business as may properly come before said meeting.
NOTICE IS ALSO GIVEN that you and each of you are hereby required to show cause at the time and place heretofore mentioned why the business of the above named bankrupt corporation should not be continued under the Trustee hereinafter to be named.
Dated at Oswego, N. Y. this ?? day of March, 1935.
AVERY H. WRIGHT
Referee in Bankruptcy

From here on NuTyps are listed as "of Oswego". I suspect that Sawyer Tool was formed to buy the rights to the NuTyp during bankruptcy proceedings or that Sawyer Brass and Iron Foundry of Oswego bought the NuTyp rights.

So, manufacturers of the NuTyp are:
Fulton, Atlas, Oswego, INT, Sawyer. - possibly more.

One more thing: Patent #1684215 was for the swivel nut wrench on the INT produced NuTyps.

JKB: THANK YOU!!:bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

to me that was a fun read at 4am when i couldn't sleep and didn't want to turn on a movie or watch some sporting event.

so without the Sawyer on my little USA made version of the CWV it reads that maybe mine is just a NuTyp and maybe pre 1935 and maybe closer to 1922?

Mr. Fulton was a very busy guy back in the day and since his tools are still around today all I can figure is that he made his products too good so re sales were almost nil unlike today's products that are mostly throw away.

i'm not sure you have this in your paperwork, but since i own a few Fulton and L.M.V vises I've read several newspaper articles about Mr. Fulton. in one article i think it mentions he marries the daughter of Mr. Massey (name sound familar) who also made some very nice vises in the late 1800's and early 1900's. if you could confirm that to go with Mr. Fulton's post you just posted that would be even more awesome.

thanks for all your hard work and if some day you decide you want to write a book i'll get you as much information that i know and can find along with pictures of some of my vises. speaking of old vises most of the pictures of my Fultons and LMV's are on my old semi crashed laptop so i'll try to get those later, but i had this old Fulton anvil vise picture handy and the old quick release Massey that i think both were made in the late 1800's.

keep up the great work and thanks again.

Wow ! That was an informative bit there. Thanks to DIF I'll need to stop haplessly overlooking the numerous Nutypes that I assume àre all of an import nature. I saw the earlier post and didn't realize the history there, which JKB has so thoroughly dug up !

Thanks for the lessons !
