picked up a box of old machinist tools and parts, still sorting what to keep. Wondering what a few of the items are. The 1st picture is the lot of tools (most of it). The 3 wood boxes in the upper right are micrometers. But what are:

- 2 jigs with spring loaded pins in the center and thumb-wheel which locks the pin
- about 11" extension with set screw for cutting tool, made for ??
- bunch of tapered rods, about 2" to 4" long. Handles to ??
.

Got some deals. Paid $200 for everything.

Johnson 108 benchtop furnaces. Hoping to be able to modify one to use as a small propane forge, if possible to re-insulate the inside correctly.

It's possible to buy the interior fire brick/insulation for these but doesn't seem cheap. I picked up one of these last year and found the web site that sells parts but trying to decide if it's worth it to fix one.

The devices in the second pic are for measuring the OD of a shaft that is in a place where you can't get a mic on it. You set it on the shaft and move the pin down to touch the shaft and lock it. You then mic the top bar along with the length of the pin sticking out and that's the diameter of the shaft.

Pic 3 is a boring bar used in a lathe.

Pic 4 are taper pins used to secure a part.

thanks Pete. I figured the cutting tool was for a lathe, just wondering what type or size. The explanation on the jigs make sense.

Always learning, thanks again.

What about just buying fire bricks & refractory cement from Tractor Supply?

It's not one of these canisters is it (attached image below)? I saw it at my local ReStore, along with some globes...

No, that one you showed is a modern equivalent, but not a compatible fit. The ones this uses came in two sizes and I believe the lantern uses the shorter version. (I do have 4-5 of the taller...)

I picked up this old top and bottom box at the local used tool shop today-paid $36 for the pair. They look to be straight out of some Ford plant, with a heavy plate welded to the bottom of the box, with heavy industrial casters on it. The tires are filled with machining chips. Most of the decals on it are from the '70s. The drawer pull for the third drawer on the bottom is in that drawer-so I think I got a good deal. They are grubby and dirty, but not dented or damaged. I'd been looking for an older Craftsman set like this. They are in the back of my truck for the trip to my cottage, where they will reside for now.

Kid sold me the box and all the tools $50. Moved here from Ohio with his fiancé who he later found in bed with her manager. Was putting together enough money to get back home. Most of the tools are generic brand but I can probably break them up put some sets together, and make my money back.

This box may get refinished, I hate the crappy spray paint job.

Felt bad for the guy. He's trying to leave tomorrow. I paid more than I wanted but it should work out ok.

Answered a CL ad for a Snap On vise that was posted 30 min prior for $80. Got to the guys shop and sitting next to it was a 1/3 hp Baldor grinder. Asked if he would take $100 for both and he countered at $120. Said ok handed him the cash and loaded up. :bounce:
The last pic is after I wire brushed off some surface rust and applied WD40.

A little bait and switch today as I rushed out of the house early expecting a free band saw and a free Walker jack and all sorts of garage nooks and crannies full of FREE STUFF.

Got there early, and was totally underwhelmed by the remnants. Crappy realtor had used the estate sale pics for the ad and the garage was locked up tight and mostly empty.

Wound up with some smalls, chemicals, a few electric motors, two extinguishers, a nice plant, and a slab of marble which I really didn't need, but will find a spot for somewhere...

The first 4 photos are from the very promising CL free ad:
https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/zip/6054318808.html

The last is my haul.

Wish I'd made the estate sale...

Yeah, that's kind of low posting pics of stuff you know is long gone. But free is free...

I went to a CL post of a guy trying to clear out the last stuff after estate sale. I found some amazing things in nooks & crannies that I couldn't believe people didn't take...

Found some old tool catalogs today

1952, 1958, 1962, 1975, 1985 Snap-on catalogs and a 1995 Mac catalog....the '58 Snap-on catalog is a loose-leaf style but the seller didn't have the original binder.....

20170322_161318.jpg

The guy I got them from use to live in NY....3 of the catalogs had dealer stickers on them....

20170322_161947.jpg

Later I bought 30 chrome cabinet handles for $3.00 (Lowes sells these handles for $2.37 ea. X 30 = $71.10 :rocker: I saved $68.10 :D) I don't know what I'll do with them yet but.....

20170322_162851.jpg

They've got like a waxy coating on them that I guess keeps them from getting scratched up but rubs off pretty easy....

20170322_163034.jpg

Also picked up a cheap razor scraper w/5 blades for .50¢....

20170322_163102.jpg

I'm going to maybe scan all the older Snap-on catalogs and post them here somewhere and maybe over on the Collecting Snap-On site.....

Nice catalog haul JM. I love to browse through tool catalogs. It's just not the same online.

Chris- what a sneaky way to get people out there. That place looks like it had a lot originally.

My brother swears by his Big Green Egg. He even has some sort of thermo controller for it so that he can set a temp and it will modulate the vents to hold that temperature as long as possible. No more staying up all night to cook a brisket! Although we still seem to wind up staying up all night drinking beer anyway. ;)

Just be sure that if you're moving it around you don't do what a buddy of mine did with his and catch a castor on a crack and tip it over. Darn thing humpty-dumptied on him!

Got these last Saturday at one of about 15 yard sales I hit. First a Kalamazoo SM1 1" belt sander I got for $50. It looks hardly used. I thought that was a pretty good deal, so I did not try and haggle any on it. Second 2 USA made Desco wire gauge drill sets, all brand new/unused. A 1-60 and a 61-80 set. $10 for both sets.

Killer deal junktastic, on the sander and drill bits.....

....a cheap import 1x30 sander from Harbor Freight will cost you $55 before tax ($44 using a 20% off coupon) so $50 for a U.S. made sander rates you a "you ****"
http://www.harborfreight.com/1-in-x-30-in-belt-sander-60543.html

Another "you ****" on the numbered drill bits too!! (I'll double your money if you want to sell them)

Yeah, wish I could find a nice sander like that around here...

Today was a total bust.. Went to probably 10+ garage sales... ugh...

Only thing I found was a 12V/20A power supply for $8... A box of misc hangers for pegboard for $2... and that's about it... :(

Supposed to rain starting tomorrow too... I saw an auction that's kind of far away I think Saturday morning... will have to play that by ear depending on the weather.

Was late showing up to an estate sale and got told all the, "decent tools are gone"! But I didn't mind as I was just looking for odds and ends that caught my eye. All together I spent right around $25 and change. Some things are pretty rough but others will clean up nice.

Snap-on SSD12 $1

Snap-on SDWP 244 (haven't ever seen a Woden handle snap-on) though I think it should be a screwdriver not a file [emoji23] $.50

Patience paid off with some Starrett punches. Some are in rough shape though. Pin punches, center punches, scribe , pin vise. $5

MOHR die set that someone had hidden away to find later.
If anyone could tell me what kind of quality these are I would appreciate it. I haven't had much occasion to use tap/due sets in the past few....ever. $10

Also got a small box of taps. Largest is 1/4, marked GTD (Greenfield Tool and Die) some show some wear but others look brand new! $2

NOS handles. Bruner ivory. $1

Tap handles. One GTD in the middle and two unmarked and a chuck key (snap-on?) $5

Obligatory overall.

Junktastic - YOU ****!!! That is a screaming deal on the Kalamazoo. Want to double your money? LOL

The sander is earmarked for my shop(if it wasn't, I would think about taking you up on that offer)

Not tool related, but there is a lady around here who does one day estate sales, and has half price after 1:00. I was at her sale earlier in the day on Saturday, and saw this Price Pfister faucet, new in the box with all the hardware. It was 15 bucks. I must be cheap, because I thought that seemed kind of high. I went back after 1:00 on my way home, and it was still there. Got it for $7.50. When I got home, I looked the thing up, and holy ****, Home Depot sells the thing for $150. Installed it in the bathroom. It's actually kind of fancy, way to fancy for a grease monkey like me, but hey, the wife likes it, so it's all good.

Swingpress, I stopped at the old Bruner and Ivory factory in Hope AR a few years ago, it was already closed and mostly stripped.

From what I have read the company closed in 2004 and burned in 2012. It was cool to find a couple that were well marked. They feel like they have been in oil rags for years, that nice smooth feeling, but still grips in your hand. It's going to be tempting to not find something to swap them out on. But, I just re-handled everything I have last month with new hickory.

Swing,
That's a nice haul! I can't say I've heard of MOHR but that doesn't mean much - I'm newer to precision/machine tools than many of the old hats here. I do know from experience that typically taps/dies that are US made are worth the money over most of what's sold today. I, like you did, snag them whenever I see them at sales.
If you decide you want to part with them or the Starrett punches PM me. I will be honest though, I wouldn't be in for a lot of $. I'm only putting it out there if you think you won't use them and want to move them on. ;)

I also have the same set of 18 Mohr dies. They're split for adjusting and seem to be of decent quality, better than Ace or Hanson.
