Neide: it's hard to see what the jaws look like in your picture which were the parts of that vise that i usually see broken or pretty beat up. nice that you found one with the pipe jaws that are usually MIA.

post up a few more pictures of your Oswego after you clean it up from both sides and of the jaws and jaw towers and maybe we can give you a better idea. it looks like it might be missing some parts on the bolt through swivel old design and i'd say if you look back through the thread maybe in a search here on GJ or use Google to find some of the old Garage Journal posts for more of these vises and as already said Morgan and Parker made the same vises.

if you go in your GJ profile and put in your area it might help us help you put a value on it cause if you live in New England the price for this vise would be a lot different if you lived in England. just saying. also click on Avatar while you are in your profile and put in a picture of something you'd like to show up under your GJ name like i have a bison made out of steel scraps and old tools.

again welcome to the forum and good luck with the vise and hope the jaw and jaw towers are in good shape on your new find.

Joe: looks like you might have a threaded pin since the sides are flat so you can put your wrench on it. GREAT LOOKING VISE that is for certain.

Bcom: i usually don't like open screw vises much except for the older bigger ones and your little guy does have a nice look to it. sorry i can't say i've seen one, but maybe somebody has.

KMS, if it isn't raining, I'll try to get a pic later today.---I'm wondering which would be the hardest to shake loose after being frozen for decades, a tapered friction pin or a threaded one?:dunno:

VA, do you honestly think the threads go through both the swivel jaw and Static Support. I am thinking that if they are threaded then they are threaded on the bottom of the pin below the taper.

Do not waste your time if the pins are rusted in place. One will show up eventually, maybe Joe will show his in a pic. Thanks for the thought.

VA: since you put a little oil on your CHAIN GANG and you can put a wrench on it i bet that Starrett's swivel jaw pin might come out using a small crescent wrench. if i owned that vise i'm sure i'd maybe find a place on a bench to use it even if only for a few projects cause i've got plenty of daily users. BTW don't you have 2 of those and maybe a few others that might have the swivel jaws and the threaded pins?

good luck

Here is my old vise. Came out of a bike shop where I worked in the late 70's: Greensboro's Toga Bike Shop. Recently I removed it from my bench and discovered the pivot bolt had come loose. Rebuilt it and gave it a rattle can quickie repaint.

Willy: nice save out of the old shop and great job spiffing it up too. looks great on your bench.

also welcome to Garage Journal and i bet you have more than a few skills and good words to share while you learn a few more from us.

ALL: well it will be a while trying to replenish the tool funds, but i don't have any more daughters to marry off now at least. here's a 200 pound 7 inch Blacksmith vise from an old gold mine in case some of you might want or actually need one so PM me for the information if you have a grand to spare. may or may not be worth that much, but it looks like a keeper.

Here's another anvil vise I just picked up.---It has some casting flaws and some attempts to correct the flaws it looks like.

Looks like a Wilton 9400 and an anvil had a baby!

Can anyone identify this vise?

free upload

Nope, but really cool looking. What looks like a brass insert, does it have a lever or anything on the other side that would make it a quick release?

Has anybody ever used a flywheel from an old hit & miss engine as a base for a vise stand? I saved a bunch of these from the scrapper, and most of them are too far gone from sitting out in the weather for years. Some of the bigger wheels are over 36" and around 200 lbs I'd guess.

What is this worth?

I may have a chance to pickup this vice.

I hope it will be attached to the 5 x 6 x 1 inch plate table that I made about 15 years ago. It has 4 air cylinders to lower wheels so it can be rolled around.

Nicklemore, I paid $700 for mine. It looks great and just has some surface dirt to clean. I had to take it apart to move it to its temporary location in order to prep for cleaning and BLO. I've had it for a couple of weeks but couldn't muster the strength to move the beast. I'm eventually going to place mine on one of those Gladiator 6" tables on the 3/4 steel plate it is currently resting on. I got a $200 deal on a new table coming in early April. I wish I knew how to weld or knew a welder I could trade favors for welding a stand.

I found an old Oswego Tool #2891/2 vise . Needs cleaning yet. Screw does turn so just need to get it opened up an clean it. Any one have ideas of age an value ? I9d6c0de672721d6c652fb7da67418497.jpg

Neide
Oswego Tool Company was founded by former employees of Kingsford Foundry, in Aug 1901.

The Oswego Tool Company was sold to a newly organized corporation, the International Nutyp Tool Corporation, in 1930.

The center rod swivel went out of general production starting around 1877, with the patent of Hall & Cooke, with most producers having the current base by 1920.

As to value, like my Father always said, it is worth what someone will pay you for it when you need to sell it.

What do the round knobs on the outside of the sleeve do ? Are they a tension adjustment or have you not played with them yet. Mine has the bulb type spindle knob like the picture posted earlier and NO tension bolts. I guess yours is a later model ?

By swivel are you talking about the bottom of center rod as would be used to loosen vise to swivel right or left ?

Also a nice little 8" x 1 1/4" rail anvil for $5.

Just finished up my restoration of my little 3.5" craftsman. Fresh powder coat and bead blasted then lightly polished the handles.

VA, I remember that vise, it was my master for Starrett 6" jaws, those are my first set of Starrett jaws. Nice vise.

Speaking of nice vises, how about the triple swivler that Mooreag47 has. Nice vise. The finish thofdahl put on that little Craftsman is super. Nice stuff today.

Took my Grandson fishing in a snow storm and had a blast today. Fish were real hungry and the kid loved it.

i just found this Prentiss "Bulldog" vise on Craigslist. The model is either 25 3 1/2 or 26 3 1/2, as both are model numbers are on the dynamic jaw. The "Vise Database" that is published on google docs:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...YI7UKRpUd3aheAE86KBQRBGb9s/edit#gid=666157805

does not seem to describe this vise. Could this vise be something unusual?

I have a couple of questions for our vise experts here. When opening the vise from a closed position, you can turn the handle about 4 revolutions before the dynamic jaw begins to move. The handle and screw move outward for almost an inch before the dynamic jaw moves at all.

When I partially disassembled the dynamic jaw/slide, I could see that there is a spring clip and a "bushing" on the the shaft of the screw. The bushing is placed toward the thread side of the screw, with the spring clip ( e-clip) on the outer (handle side) of the screw. Should this bushing be relocated to the outer side of the spring clip? I'll try to get a clear picture, if that would help.

The 326 is pretty much my favorite vise. Every aspect of it is top quality and craftsmanship. I find that this vise does exactly what you ask it to do. Meaning if you hand tighten the swivel lugs then the vise stays in place....I never find myself swacking the spindle handle to tighten the grip on whatever it may be that I'm working on...it's a shame that there isn't the equivalent in 10" or 12" jaws....I may give my entire collection away for one of those!

Moorage, I still think it is a rebranded Flexivise, made in Los Angeles California and probably sold to Marmel Products Inc.

Check out this link.---It's slow so wait on it.

Despite a raining miserable weekend here in Southwest Washington I was able to pick up this Rock Island 542-BX off of Craigslist for $50. Overall the Vise is in pretty good shape I found some markings on the slide that I believe indicate it's made in 1944. the biggest issue I have is the Jaws are pretty chewed up and the rear 2 inches of the slide have a crack down the middle of it. Just wondering what you all think might be the best fix for the cracked slide? I was reading a Miller Forum where they were back and forth between brazing and Welding just wanted to get some of your guys' opinions here. Any way I am pretty stoked with the purchase. The craftsmanship of the vise is terrific, and I look forward to restoring it and keeping it forever.

You have a bunch of main screw to D-jaw slop going on; but Pics would help as I'm not "seeing" what your saying. (Part of the day grinding on my taxes probably doesn't help...)

VISEs, you're talking about 400lbs. of combo.---Looks like we're getting up another foundry order.---I'll take 2.

Speaking of foundry orders.....the report back from the initial foundry is way way way way way out of wack for the vise stands. They want $2,300 for each with a minimum order of 50....sorry fellas but I'm going a different route.

I'm told there is a green sand foundry in Mexico that would do them for a song so I'm looking into that option too.
