Stumbled across this 3/8 ratchet missing a piece. It says 'pat pending' on the bottom but has no other makings. Any ideas?

Looks like it might have had an extension and sockets that fit in the handle.

I think you might be right that makes a lot of sense..any other guesses?

Looks like it could be a motorcycle tool or something that held spark plug sockets and extension or something
Compact to not take up a lot of space.

I think it would look even more stupid then it already does with a rubber grip. And be huge.

It's looks like the limited edition "flag pole holder" ratchet that was only produced in 1984.

New Britain Hand Tool made a similar-looking item called a "Pocket-Socket" about 30-35 years ago. It had a removable thumbwheel ratchet and the sockets were stored In a pull-out tray nestled inside the handle. Looks to me as this is a variation on that theme as noted above.
