to flake or, not to flake,, that is the question

i just had my garage done in a full flake finish consisting of white and grey flakes. I originally wanted to go with a a solid white epoxy floor, but was advised against it due to the maintenance and upkeep the floor would need.

i had never been a fan of partially flaked floors, but i am really happy that i went with a full flake broadcast instead.

360 Detail - What is the lip/sidewall on your floor made of that is also epoxy'ed? I'm looking at options and currently thinking a PVC base board/trim but I like that you were able to epoxy that. Great clean look. Is that just concrete that has been covered or what? Thanks for insight!

the stemwalls are concrete and was covered in epoxy and flakes the same fashion the ground was.

I was originally planning to do the job myself, but ended up getting a quote from a few companies and settled on one. They started out at quoting me $5.50 sq/ft. After some negotiations, I was able to get them to come down to $4.57 sq/ft. Garage is 700 sq/ft. The coating has a 20 year warranty against peeling, discoloring etc from the installer. Epoxy color is a standard gray, and flake color consists of white and light gray flakes, flake size is 1/4".

Day 1 started with filling in any cracks or craters, grinding the surfaces, then vacuuming and leaf blowing it multiple times to ensure there was no more dust on the ground before applying a vapor barrier. The following day, the crew came out to lay down the base coat, before covering the floor with a full flake broadcast. I asked the crew how many lbs of flakes they used and they told me approximately 125 lbs. On the final day, the polyurea topcoat was put down.

Tip for partial flaking...put down a sheet of clear plastic, practice tossing the flakes till you get them even. Use the plastic to gather them up and practice again before doing on epoxy.

What do you mean you don't have a clear topcoat? Did you just broadcast flakes into the base coat and leave it? If so, you probably have uncovered vinyl flakes that are holding dirt.

I would not use a mix with white flake in my garage if I had it to do over again. The tires turn them grey and you can see tracks on the floor. I put down a heavy beige/brown flake mix and the white flakes are the only ones that show the tire marks like that. I don't have a clear topcoat. Maybe someone else could comment on whether that helps prevent this.

I did my two car garage with EpoxyCoat and flaked it with about 3-4 bags in addition to what came with the kit. I'm glad that I did the extra. It looks great and hid the imperfections in my install job well. As others have said it hides small items as well. A magnet help to quickly find metal parts.

Related to the thread, for those who are "pro-flake" which size (1/8" or 1/4") and why?

Flake, flake and more flake!!! Seriously, I just did mine a month or so ago in full broadcast and it is worth every extra penny IMO. Yes, I work in my garage...and I have noticed that things are more difficult to see if you drop them but no big deal if you deal with items of significant size. If you primarily work on making friendship bracelets with little beads (anyone remember those lol) it may not be the best choice for you.

Once you blow off or sweep the floor you will be AMAZED on how well that "busy" look hides dirt and ****. So far mine has been great and rolling engine stands, dragging lumber and the such has not even left a mar in the finish of the clear.

Yup, you got it. The white is the only one that really shows the dirt. No flakes are coming up though if that's what you mean by "uncovering" though.
