Canadian imported vises

It seems that most people don't want anything to do with new imported vises. I find that the imported vises available in Canada are good vises for the price.

I got a Bessey 6" that came of a welders mobile truck. Also purchased a new Irwin Record 6" mechanics vise.

Bessey is a German company and Irwin Record is based in Switzerland, so maybe European Chinese is better than American Chinese.

I know these aren't production vises, but they are suitable for the pto shafts and u-joints I have to do.

Nothing wrong with imported vises. Those who don't like them seem to only want to look at them and collect them, nothing else. At least yours have got a purpose.

Us living in Canada, everything is an import. Even if it's a Parker, starrett, record or Wilton. I'll take any of these imports. BCD.

Whit: of course there are going to be guys posting that want to use a vise as a press or anvil and agree with you. if you want to check out one of the many broken vises on one of the broken vise threads you'll see that vises break cause a lot of guys and gals were taught that you could beat on a vise like the guys do with a blacksmith vise that is meant to be beat on.

cheater bars on the handles, using as a press or an anvil is not what a bench vise was built for. it's a third hand and cause so many people grew up seeing their relatives or friends using it for other jobs they figured it was ok to.

your German made vise isn't what i'd compare to a CHINESE IMPORT that has lower quality steel in it's castings. i'm not sure where the new Besseys are made whether they are made in Germany or China now, but your Bessey looks like it might have been made in Germany which is better quality usually. the RECORD company might be located in Switzerland, but their vise factory is in China and if i recall correctly it's in a city named Sheffield so they could keep the Sheffield name on their vices that used to say Sheffield, England or the earlier ones that that said Made in England. European vices are imports, but don't compare their quality to the ones made in China.

as i mentioned to you before your vices might not break doing your press work, but when they do you'll know why they did i guess.

to show you how people think about a vise that is a tool my nephew saw a 6 inch 175 pound vise i had on the floor cause i was getting ready to ship it to a member to use in his shop and my nephew almost ran his wheelbarrow into it instead of moving a box on the other side. he said it's just a vise and he's a 25 year old contractor that's building homes now. his dad throws his tools in the back of his pick up and lets them sit outside in the rain. he's always spending his money on new tools and never has any money cause after a few months his tools are not worth anything if he wants to upgrade. yes he has skills and does nice work, but he'll never be able to borrow any of my tools.

as i said before if you want to use a vise as a press instead of buying a small press that's up to you.

EDIT: to go with your title there were several good vice companies making vices in Canada and i think there still are a couple, but not certain if Rae and a few others moved their factories.

I think there is a class of new vises that are available in Canada and Europe and not in the USA. They all look similar whether they are Record, Bessey, or the ones in the pictures below Gray and Jet.

To keep things in perspective, the black shaft in the picture is from a John Deere machine. The OEM replacement U-Joint is made in China and costs $165. The 2 yokes cost $1200. I find with a press it is easy to bend expensive parts. With a vise not so much.

Bessey has both Chinese and Turkish made vises now. The Turkish vises are a lot more expensive, but are very strong. $80 for Chinese, $500 for a Turkish vise, according to Amazon.

90kpsi vs 30kpsi tensile strength, not to mention finished quality - slop and play in the sliding jaw.

Record is just a name anymore. When Irwin buys a company out, they send production to China and keep the name. They did it to Peterson Vise Grip - DeWit, Nebraska lost hundreds of jobs, and now we have Irwin Vise Grip. Record vises are cheap for their sizing. Interesting that Vise Grips pliers aren't cheap considering their sourcing.

Wagon-You are right about Records being cheap for their size. $190.00 can for a 6" 71 lb. vise.

I learned about new Morgans from a recent Garage Journal thread. A Morgan 5" 79 lb. vise costs $735 can 2 hours away in Everett, Wa Basically I chose between a $200 import or a $1,000 US made vise

Nothing else? Really?

That's funny, because recently I've sold half a dozen U.S. vises to people with businesses who were tired of breaking cheap, imported vises.

One went to a guy with a truck repair company, another to a guy with a welding/fab shop, one to a guy who has a mobil service truck, another to a guy has a small trucking company and two just went to a guy with a pretty large fabrication shop.

The general theme was that the periodic down time cost more than buying a good vise.
