Scored a brand new in box 2897-22 for $284 from Tool King on ebay. Free shipping. Arrived in 3 days. May not be the kind of deal some of you deal gurus are posting but I have to say I'm happy with this one.

The best I've got a new 2897-22 for is around $225. And that only happens around the holidays when there are always a deal on it.

I'd say you did pretty good. Hopefully you got the 10% ebay bucks offer, and don't forget about ebates (another 5% back)

I just got back from HD (not really a surprise there), & saw they have a new 2897 kit. Same everything, except 1 each of 2 & 5 ah batteries, for $299. model 2897-22cx, sku 1002306351 (use google cache to see page if you really need to).

To my surprise my 2nd vacuum arrived today! I really thought it would be me vs PayPal on this.

Email... no reply & server bounce back. Phone number... bogus. 3/24 Opened PayPal dispute and sent message to seller... nothing. 3/27 item shipped without me even knowing. 3/28 Escalated dispute to claim with PayPal... still no response. 3/29 item arrived UPS from HD-Direct again, brand new. So I cancelled the PayPal claim and life goes on.

Now that is luck. Nothing for me still. I opened a dispute with PayPal yesterday. We shall see what happens.

Glad you got you second unit.

Actually I don't even know what ebucks and ebates are. I've only made 58 ebay purchases since 1999 or so. Now I'm kicking myself for not knowing.

I just got a refund to my PayPal account for $69.99 from the seller. :wtf: ...after I canceled the claim.

I'm not sure what the real deal is but I'm not looking to take advantage of anybody's bad business practices. I'll give them a day or two to catch-up and see what happens. I'm just happy it wasn't a big purchase.

I just wanted a good deal on a little red tool.

Thats pretty dang good. Best I could do was during the holidays with the HD Promo. Was $249.52 before tax. So if Zoro doesn't charge tax in your area (does me) then that would have been better off.

Love that saw though, wish I had gotten one sooner!

This is my favorite tool that cuts stuff. Ok, this and the Plasma cutter are pretty close.

Maybe their 18 Guage nailers are the weak point in the lineup then. 15 and 16 Guage guns looked good from my research.

I had the 15 gauge gun and returned it. Looked like JettaGetUpandGo's photos - poor depth control, and where it did set it properly the hole the nail made was like twice the size of the nail.

What I think I also gathered was that while they have enough power to drive the nail, they do not have as much speed as an air nailer. What that means is you have to be in a better position to press the nailer hard against the surface. The action doesn't feel at all like what an air nailer does, you get some "kickback" and it's more of a dull thunk than like an air nailer where it just goes straight in.

Waiting for generation 2. I'm more interested in a cordless framing nailer anyway, where this stuff wouldn't be an issue.

Is the Portaband really all that good? Just seems so gimmicky that I never even gave it a second thought/look.

What are most people using it for?

My Ryobi 16 ga feels similar, but never had any trouble sinking the nail consistently (once I adjusted the depth correctly)

I have 2 portable air compressors and a bunch of air nailers. The cordless is nice when I just dont feel like lugging stuff around, but if I was trimming out a whole room at one time, Id stick with my air stuff. Not because the cordless doesnt do the job, just because I can "justify" dragging the compressor and hoses around if Im doing 3 windows, 2 doors and baseboard.

Its pretty great. Even just a portaband in general. First thing I used it for was cutting 6" duct in the crawl space. Granted its a 5" spread but it got most of the way through and the just rotated it around. Wasn't quite a flush cut but much better than using snips or a sawzall. And being M18 I didn't have to worry about dragging a cord all through the crawlspace.

Next I used it for fabbing a christmas decoration. Cutting a really sharp angle in 1" AL to form a star. Wouldn't have been able to do it on a chop saw. If I had the swag stand it would have been easier but free hand was ok and was able to fill the gaps in when it was welded.

Cut rebar with it the other day while helping a neighbor with a small retaining wall project for a swing set. Granted you could use about anything for that but the portaband is nice and easy and no sparks. Quieter too.

Haven't used it for much else since I haven't had it that long.

If it cuts with a portaband, the portaband is the way to cut it. Butter smooth, fast cutting with inexpensive consumables. Anything metal I would previously cut with the sawzall, the portaband gets the job.

I use it any time on metal I don't need a "perfect" cut, in which case I go to the Evolution. If you had a steadier hand it would be better, but I don't.

A lot of steel and aluminum angle, tube, & strap cut to length when I'm fabricating something. Last night I cut some 10' long 3"x3"x.25" steel tube to 9'-6" finished length while it sat on sawhorses. Some hard plastic like Delryn. I've even cut bolts to shorten them up. Small rod pieces bundled to cut them the same lengths.

I usually have it sitting on my bench connected to a Swag Off-road table they make for it. This is so great for cutting spall parts clean. I use a mini Irwin quick clamp to hold the trigger down and a micro mitre gauge.
http://www.swagoffroad.com/SWAG-V40-Portaband-Table_p_63.html

If I did that again I'd build a table from scratch like Brian Oltrogge did so you can clamp to it. I'll probable make an oversized top to overlay on the Swag table.

I don't disagree and I know you said TOOL-ONLY but it should be noted again. The text description mentions "4ah" somewhat suggesting a 4.0 battery is included, but I'm sure it's not based upon the -20 part number

Just a heads up to all.

Pictures of a shelf tag?

I don't doubt it, but it probably wasn't a store that stocked them. See that all the time with Milwaukee and HD. Store that never carried it, in the system for clearance and 50% off. Store that stocks it. Full price. Sometimes thats not the case, but 90% of the time.

I'd buy two more for spares for $115. Portaband is an amazing tool.

They have a new combo for their Fuel line impact & drill for $299. It comes with 1 each of 2ah & 5ah batteries. Stocked below the OPE equipment.

The light that is included is better than old days, but I would never go out and buy the light on its own (rather have the lantern). So for the extra $20, I'd rather go the Fuel route. You get more oomph on the same size battery pack, or the option for a lighter compact one.

I did see that same kit pictured but included a hackzall. That dropped to $200 the last I saw (when i bought mine)

I'd like to just pick up a couple of individual M12/M18 tools. Are there anything like 20% off coupons at any dealers so I could just get the items I need? Thanks

try either ebay (people selling the things that they have stripped out of kits) or CPO reconditioned.

i have order a few reconditioned tools from CPO, and have been satisfied with their quality. in fact, the last purchase was the first i have seen from them when the tool didnt look brand new. in this case, everything looked brand new, except one battery had some scuff marks on the bottom. the other battery was clearly brand new, and still in the heavy plastic bag. the charger still had the wire tie on it, with the cord neatly folded.

YMMV

I purchased my Fuel Sawzall from CPO as a bare tool. I am certain that either the entire exterior shell was replaced or there was a defect with the tool new and it was never used. Aside from the RECON stamp in the plastic there wasn't a mark on it! Great way to save a few dollars on a tool that isn't used very often.

If it was a drill or something I use every nearly day I would be a little more hesitant to buy a reconditioned product due to the difference in warranty. 5 years on a new tool and I believe 1 year on a reconditioned?

this caused me to pull out the recent purchase and look. it isn't stamped RECON, but there is a lightly scratched BB 2-17 above the trigger on the right hand side. almost like a owners mark (maybe it is?). i wonder if they would notice if i tried to warranty it. (although i dont believe i have ever done that with a power tool.)

i have only ever bought recon tools from CPO, next time i run across one of them, i will need to see if they are marked. . . . .

I apologize. You are correct. My Milwaukee is marked with a date and initials, likely the date it was reconditioned and the technician's initials.

Ryobi and Ridgid use a more obvious RECON stamp in the plastic. I thought I remembered Milwaukee was the same since it's they're all kind of under the same ownership.

Yep I've never seen Milwaukee do the recon heat stamp but my Ryobi 40V chainsaw and the battery that came w it are stamped as such. I don't recall if the charger was also stamped.

Couple pages back this was posted:

So, terrible IMO. I'll stick to air.

That's almost certainly user error. These guns have a fair amount of kickback and need to be held tight against the workpiece. If they are not held tight, you will get what was pictured above.

Certainly could be the case. But if that's how it works, that ***** too.

Here's what I bought 5 something years ago and works great:
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Porter-C...r-Crown-Stapler-Combo-Kit-PCFP12234/203471431

And it's cheaper.

We picked the same kit up. It has worked great for us. Ended up selling/trading the compressor at some point, & now have a Ridgid of similar build, but works just the same.

for those of us using cheap air connectors, I just watched this minutes ago for some more power

That's almost certainly user error. These guns have a fair amount of kickback and need to be held tight against the workpiece. If they are not held tight, you will get what was pictured above.

Perhaps that is the case, but then the tool wasn't engineered correctly imo. It shouldn't fire until the nose guard is depressed. If those are the results, then the sensitivity should be adjusted so it doesn't fire until proper contact is made.
The point of battery is to get rid of the cord, not change how the tool has to be used. If that is the case, there should be some kind of warning or mention of that in the box/ on the tool. The Ryobi nailers show very little kickback compared the the Milwaukee, so it is preventable...somehow

I agree its mainly user error. You have to have to hold a nail gun with some firm pressure against the piece to counter recoil bounce.

I know guys that never cant ever seem to use a pneumatic framing nailer without leaving heads up.

My boss gave me a summer help hire once that even with a 16ga finish nailer he couldn't set a nail He always kept getting my hammer and nail set

Concord Carpenter has several YouTubes on that Milwaukee 16 ga angle gun they used it both in the field and did shop tests (along with the 18 ga straight brad nailer too). They had no problems setting fasteners flush.

My biggest concern is the weight. Its slightly more than 2 lbs heavier than my 16 ga pneumatic though the overall size apprx 12 x 12 is about the same. Watch Robiilard in the video he is often using both hands on the tool.

For another perspective consider its like at least 1 lb more than a M18 Fuel hammer drill or only 1 lb less than 2763 impact wrench.

I'm heading out to my nearest HD today to see if there is is one in stock I can get a hands on to assess that weight factor Overall the $259 price is pretty attractive to me.

If you have a rural king near they have a deal on the 1/2 impact. The kit (two 5a batteries, charger, tool, and case) for 329 if you buy a $20 impact bit set. Plus they have a 12% rebate on everything in the store right now.

Tool fires just fine.

You need to hold the tool firmly and keep it held while firing.

Think of it like shooting a handgun... you can't hold a 44 mag like you would a 22 when firing. If you do, the bullet won't go anywhere near where you want it. Is that the fault of the 44 mag that you have to hold it tighter than a 22? Nope!

The tool works just fine. You just have to adjust how you use it slightly. It isn't any harder or easier... just different.

Yep CPO still doesn't have the hedge trimmer. It just seems they never have the one thing I want.
