Here are some before pics of the place when I got it :

The wall was cut & a brand new door was installed by my landlord.
shop7.jpg

Annoying tar paper on half of the walls was tricky & a waste of time to remove so we left it there.
shop6.jpg

Small exhaust fan was installed by my landlord.
I'll admit, it does nothing at all. Maybe i can upgrade to a larger fan next spring. You can see the water was taken from the bathroom & my hose is hooked up here. I didn't want the hose to be hooked up outside so this was where it was installed. It's not close to the garage door like I wanted but we were able to work around that.
shop5.jpg

shop4.jpg

There was a drop in the floor about 4-6 inches deep. Another upgrade by my landlord was this concrete ramp. It extends 4 feet into the garage. Low cars don't scrape when enterig the garage.
shop3.jpg

I was lucky to get the place with a pretty new roll up steel garage door.
shop10.jpg

Floor drain that I found out after washing cars, does'nt catch all of the water =(. We eventually figured out how to catch the water & broom sweep it into the drain. Next spring I'll be looking for a shallow water pump so I can put the broom away because it's a pain in the ***!
shop1.jpg

Floor painting round 1 with two 8 feet electric base board heaters installed by my landlord. They are terrible, I've been using propane. I need to upgrade my heating situation. THe paint all came up a few months later. I was in a rush to get the place ready. I was working in the old shop during the day, getting the new place all fixed up at night. I made the mistake of adding playground sand to the paint. I saw the condensation in the bag but ignored it. A few weeks later, the paint started to crack =(.
floor1.jpg

Getting the walls ready. The bathroom was completely unfinished as well.

Customer seating area, wait till you see what it looks like now!

Re: my 17x29 detail shop BIG "A" DETAILING queens ny

Pics of the garage all fixed up:

Vac & garbage can are no longer taking up space in the corner.
10corner2.jpg

This plastic supply cabinet was recently replaced by a hand built wooden one.
11cabinetcustwaitingarea.jpg

I got creative with an old 13" Toshiba tv that was laying around in my attic. It's been replaced by a brand new 19" flat screen Audiovox.
2tv.jpg

Hand painted good luck horse shoe from my girlfriend for good luck!
3horseshoe.jpg

Assorted magizines for the customers. The table is made out of a Infiniti G35 wheel & a piece of round plexi glass.
4magazines.jpg

Went to Target for some cheap ottomans & a $30 "dorm room chair". Pillows were picked up from Wallmart.
5waitingarea.jpg

I built my desk. It's not the best quality but it gets the job done. Maybe I'll upgrade to a nice Craftsman eventually.
7desk.jpg

5 gallon chemical rack & ladder have been moved & no longer occupy the corner of the shop.
8sign.jpg

I had a customer of mine volunteer his time in exchange for a few details. He installed all my light fixtures & added a few extra outlets. In case you were wondering where my compressor is, I have it hidden in the bathroom. It runs on a separate circuit breaker. It's a little noisey when it runs. Maybe this winter when the shop slows down I'll figure out a way to reduce the noise. I know I need to put a piece of rubber on the bottom of the bathroom door for starters. A quieter compressor would be nice too!

Well 1 year later & I got really bored with the shop & how it looks. I loved the first year here but decided to change it up a bit. I wanted to build a place that was fun to work in & fun to hang out in for my customers. People come from all over to get a detail by me & my crew so I have to make them feel comfortable while they're here.

Here is my shop introduction thread, taken from the various forums that we sponsor. I removed the price menue because I'm not on here to advertise my shop. If I get a few local customers from here thats cool. I'm really just crazy about garages & love seeing the builds that some people do. I love sharing my space with all of you.

At 18 I got my first job in the body shop as an apprentice to the head painter.
I would take the car after body filler was completed & sanded smooth.
Taping, mixing, spraying & sanding the primer coats, tape it up again & get the car ready for paint.
After getting the car back I wetsanded the clear coat, compounded & polished the outside of the car.
3 years later in the summer of 2000, I decided to leave the body shop & venture out on my own.
With $2,000 I started my own mobile detailing business. I still remember the first car I detailed, my neighbor's 1997 Pontiac Bonneville that I finished under the street lights at 9:30 pm. I used the money from her car to purchase my first buffer, the Dewalt 849 Variable Speed Polisher.
In 2001 I set up a tent in the backyard of a mechanic shop.
I bounced around a bit until I found my current home.
I have 12 years of experience & knowledge working with automotive paint & various other skills in the industry.
Big "A" Detailing has fast become one of the premier shops in the tri-state area.
Our customer base covers all 5 boroughs of NY, Nassau & Suffolk counties, North & Central New Jersey.
We do anything from a simple 3 bucket hand car wash to paint correction & full car wetsand restoration.

I love the privacy this garage gives to me. The steel gate & the long driveway were a few of the reasons why I took this place. The driveway is a little narrow but everything fits, including the larger suvs like Tahoes, H2, & even a really wide Nissan Quest mini van! There is a deli located right in front of my place. The food is crappy but it's convienent.

thanks mike! im over paying for the place but its worth it. i took a bad situation with my old shop & turned the new shop into the best decision i ever made with the busines. i dont mind paying a little more than the building is worth for the amount of happyness the new place brings me. i never bothered to try to get the landlord to come down on the monthly rent. i wanted the place & i got the place. i was sharing my old spot with a guy that does pdr. the pdr guy was an ******* & we constantly fought over money with fixing up the old building that neither of us owned. i asked for this spot 6 months before i moved in but the guy didnt want too rent it to me. 6 months later i was robbed at gunpoint in my old shop as i was closing up at 7pm. it was the only night i closed up alone, my guy left a half hour early because he didnt want to miss the bus. i explained to the owner of the new place how desperate i was to get out of my old place. he showed me the place on a sunday morning & i told him ill take the place as long as he makes a few minor improvements to the garage. 3 weeks later with cash in my pocket i went to his office. i read the lease, signed it with a smile & put my security deposit on his desk. the pdr guy thought i was at the dentist but i lied. i was signing thenew lease hahaha! a few weeks later i wasnt able to keep it inside anymore. i asked the pdr guy if he wanted to really know what i was doing that day & the pic i showed him made his jaw drop to the floor. i took a pic with my cepp phone camera of my signiture on the new lease. i told him he can have the place now all to himself. no more putting up with the fighting & nomore working with a dark cloud over that building. i looked foward with zero intentions of ever returning to the old spot. sorry for the long response but yea hell yea!
Any place that has a stripper pole HAS to do good work!!!!!! Nice setup!
while at home depot with one of my guys i came across this 8 ft gold pole and thought hmmmmmm...aahhmmmmmm...i doubt ill ever use it bt it sure does look cool. it adds to the whole man cave feeling the garage gives off lol.
Nice set up and I hope you have many profitable years working out of your new shop.
thank you very much. i just signed an extension on the lease.

the privacy of the garage is one of the features i love the most about this place. nobody bothers me here & i dont have to deal with annoying walk in customers taking me away from a car that im working on. i do all my marketing on a little more than 12 forums that we sponsor. appointments are made through the phone or private messaging.

started the shop ceiling insulation project a few days ago.
we should be done by the end next week.

went with the good stuff, R-19 wrapped completely around in plastic film.

were done putting up the insulation in half of the shop.
after thats done, 1/2" thick foil wrapped foam panels will be installed.

crown molding will be installed where the top of the wall meets the ceiling,
then painted purple.

You do wear the dust masks while polishing don't you.
no why would i? never wore a dust mask ever while detailing a car. the last time i wore a dust mask was when i was 18 years old when i was an apprentice to the head painter. dust mask to polish cars? why?

The silicates in the polish can lead to silicosis. I've been told manufacturers have reduced or eliminated silicates from polishes but that is just hearsay. silicosis is basically glass in the lungs.

Great use of the space. Love the security and privacy.
those are the 2 things that sold me on the place. locatin in my eyes means nothing. if you do good work, the psople will find you.
Nice shop man! I hope thats a stripper pole in your lounge?
thank you & YES that IS a STRIPPER POLE!

thats the first time i heard of what yor talking about. i dont think i know of any other detailers that use a dust mask while polishing the cars. i dont know, they keep improoving the products we use on the cars to make them work better, work quicker & be more safe for breathing etc. if there were still severe health risks then the companies that are producing these products would rec a dust mask for extra safety.
thanks for the heads up though.

my shop has been busy with alot of cars, lots of late nights & i took off a few days for thanksgiving. i have a ton of progress pics that i havent had the chance to put up yet. right now we are finished with the insulation. we have about 1/3 of the shop protected with the 1/2" foam 4ft X 8ft boards. im waiting to get a few big jobs out of the way & plan to get back to those foam boards on monday or tueseday of next week. im not sure when i will have time to prime the foam & paint the ceiling yellow. after thats all done i still have to take some sillicone & seal all the areas where each foam board meets eachother etc... the last thing that would then need to be done is to seal the garage door. i guess ill need a thick rubber strip along the bottom fo the door & some foam to seal it all in.
hopefully i HOPE everything is done before Xmas!
stay tuned!
