Have you used a torque angle gauge?

You have to find something to prop the arm up against each time before you start the next bolt. And if you don't find something to prop the arm up against, you're screwed.

Your picture isn't working, but how else are you supposed to use it if you can't hold back on it? Ingenuity is the answer. Gotta find a way.

The picture works fine when I click on it.

I'm looking for opinions on that angle gauge. I'm wondering if it's worth the added expense to get the Brownline digital angle gauge instead.

You got it absolutely right. I have one of these and the few times I have tried to use it I just gave up after few bolts. Never again.

My preferred angle gauge is long 32 tooth ratchet. Figure out where you want your torque swing to end and reference where the end of the ratchet is pointing under decent force. Back up and count 8 clicks on the ratchet and take it back to the previous point. Done - 90° added. Quick and accurate.

No need to see the picture. I've owned and used the mid-evil torture device you speak of. Used to be all we had for torque to yield fasteners that weren't just a simple 90 degree angle spec you could simply eyeball. That tool never was worth a ****. I got rid of mine as soon as I got a torque angle wrench. Only way to roll.

My VW has plenty of torque to yield bolts. I get out my Sharpie and make a witness line at noon. Turn the mark to 3 o'clock. Of course all the bolts are easy to see and are shiny. Might not be helpful for some.

It lets me see the picture just fine.

Try this short youtube video. The guy is using one on his motorcycle. Notice when he gets to the last bolt, the arm on the angle gauge moves when it's not supposed to.

Yep - yesterday - crank-bolt - 95Nm + 30 deg + 15 deg - works like a charm :)
