I picked this up at an auction last weekend for 15$, no clue if it works at all, but how do I tell how old it is?

60's era. The gold paint was only used for a handful of years, right around them being 50yrs old (IIRC).

What is the date code on the motor?
Maybe on the machine tag on the side of the frame?

For me, that would be a candidate to send to Emerson for the recall. If you don't know about to, Google: Craftsman radial arm saw recall.

Looks just like one of mine which is a 1959, too. Great price. There was a recall on these where you could get $100 for returning the motor (I believe) so you are in the black for sure! Congrats on your purchase.

You'll never get a better buy on a power tool; keep it if you've got the room. The RAS are very versatile saws, mostly knocked by those who never read the book and never learned how to adjust them and use them correctly. It's as safe as the user; It was my only saw for forty years; built several outbuildings and remodeling projects and never had a problem with it.

Looks like the one for-which I just got the Emerson recall box mailed to me, I'll be dropping the motor/cradle in the mail tomorrow for the $100 rebate. I still have the rest of the saw, let me know if you need anything. I just made a new wood table of 3/4" plywood & faced w/a sacrificial top of 1/8" fiberboard. Then the motor went-out, otherwise I would still be using it.

There should be a model # on the base framework, and a # on the motor housing.

From the recall:
Thank you for placing your order online. You should receive a return box in approximately 6-8 weeks . If you do not receive a return box within 8 weeks or you have any additional questions please contact Customer Service at 1-800-511-2628.

I need to clarify my previous post. They are a good quality RAS. I've used them since the 70s, and never had an injury. I have a 1968 C-Man RAS in my shop that I use for wood cutting and (with a couple of 10" rag wheels), polishing. They don't sell very well on our local CL. It works best for me to buy them cheap and send them in to Emerson for the bounty. The only way that I would get rid of mine is if I come across a vintage Delta, Dewalt or other top shelf brand RAS at a steal.

Can you get more than 1 recall check? If say someone pics up a saw every time they see one on craigslist can they submit for the $100? I assume they don't care if 100 people return 100 motors or if 1 person returns 100 motors. So you actually did receive more than one $100 check?

That's a cool saw. I used a later version quite a bit in the 8o's. Never cut anything off! I just had to look and see if that recall thing was true, and I believe it is.

I *think* you can... I've read several people mailing in numerous ones so I guess they don't really care... I've only done one so far, I need to submit info for another I bought for $5...

You can send in 5 motors per year under your name. After that they will want a 1099 Form to get paid for the 6th motor that you send in during the same year that you sent the other 5 in.

Thanks, that's exactly the info I needed! I'll probably keep an eye open for cheap/broken ones from now on. And as for the one passed down to me, i'll continue to use it while being as safe as possible.

I know your comment in this post is 8 years old, but I wanted to ask if you still had any parts from that saw??? I'm looking into picking one up, and when it comes to old tools like this, spare parts are always great to have just in case.
