This is a perfect example of why actions still exist......it's not about the item...it's about beating out the other person....

One only has to look at Barrett Jackson auto actions to see what I mean....

There are only 3 things you need to know about auctions.

1, know the value of what you are bidding on.
2, know when to walk away.
3, know that some idiot will keep bidding way past value.

Maybe they had money in their PayPal account and that's was their only way to pay for it.

The value of anything sold at auction (or anywhere else, for that matter) is determined by what someone is willing to pay for it. The top bidder always has at least one other bidder, who was willing to pay, near the final selling price.

The Op's example had other bidders, so he was not the only one interested, in a used engraved socket.

IMO, when I think a sold item, is "not worth it" it really means it's not worth it to me.

Is this really a thing? Doesn't ebay or someone bill them regardless? :dunno:

It is. And nope. Worst that could happen is the seller can leave you a bad mark. Even then, with eBay protection, you could say your kid ordered on your phone accidentally and nothing could happen.

It's funny to see people obsess, on how other people, should spend their own money.

Maybe he's an ebayer finishing out a set to resell and is not too worried about a few bucks.

Maybe he is a slave, to the tool truck and is late on payments.

It's his money.

Yep, people spending an extra $3/or whatever on some random widget is hard to get to worked up about.

However, its pretty common to see certain items listed BIN on ebay for higher than truck tool list prices... that seems to be the sellers all gaslighting the buyers....and if you just check the sold listings and think that is the 'market price'.

So I think that is shady (and maybe worth a thread in itself), but more because its deliberate and/or a systemic issue.

People have been paying more than list price at auctions since the very first auction, whenever that was - it didn't suddenly start happening with eBay.

I've seen this happen a lot with SO stuff. Many times it's cheaper buying directly off of their website.

The auction socket says USA under MAC but the one on the website does not. I would go for the auction personally.

Mac sockets are USA made. Same as Proto though, so I'd just buy the Proto sockets and be done with it. Bet that same Proto socket is only $10 (or less!) from zoro.

:dunno:

They have free ebay bucks or gift card need to use

Could be this. I've bought things off eBay that were "more expensive" than elsewhere because after a $10 off $25, or something like that, the price is cheaper than anywhere else.

I have as well. I've also contacted a seller and asked them to raise their price so that it would meet the terms of the "Get $** off of an $***" deal. The seller is always happy to make more, I'm happy to be able to get a discount, and eBay accomplished their goal of increasing traffic/spending. I can't see a downside.
