I recently got hold of a Record catalogue No16 Pocket edition.
I don't recall seeing this in any of CW's scans and certainly haven't seen one for real, or even a rumour of one existing.
View media item 69796One for the Canadians to look out for possibly.

I'm on it. :lol_hitti: seriously, that's a new one on me too. I have a No. 16 Pocket catalog rev 1962 and that is not in there. It is not in my 1921 catalog either. I would be happy with a sighting of a Record 508 1/2 or 518 1/2

Athol 624 Vise Restored

Just finished restoring an Athol 624 vise. For 30 years this was my beater vise that sat in the corner of the garage. I got it out recently and decided it wasn't getting enough respect and restored it. It will be promoted to my lathe tool bench. Notice the buttress threads and spring loaded spindle. People have said that Athol vises are very good, but have a rough finish. That was a spot-on observation in this case. I used body filler on it. Every time I have used body filler, the results have been disappointing considering all the work required. But it is just a vise and it looks good. Vises in general are very crude pieces compared to a watch or a gun, so you are not going to be a happy vise collector if you expect perfection.

Vintage: looks like the little trio are waiting for a bath and some repairs and spiffing up. saving the big un for a later date?

thanks again for coming down to lighten my load a little bit and can i ask you to bring a trailer or a bigger truck next time? :D

seriously a fun couple hours and hope dad likes his stuff too.

Ross: probably made in Taiwan and looks like it could be mounted as a swivel or non swivel. not an expensive or rare vise, but sounds like it's doing it's job. just curious how you are using it since you have i mounted on a 2 by? with a little searching i bet in your area you can find some good old USA made vises that won't break your bank account if you might want an upgrade to your old imported one.

Dutch: so you post a picture of a vise that you'd need to have a bridge crane to move and you bought one you can put in your hand. i'm looking forward to the next posts where you post a catalog page of a little one with a lot of pictures of the actual Record with the 12 inch jaws. OMG that looks huge for an English made vise.

anybody wonder why our grand parents and parents hit vises with sledge hammers. take a look at that ad and it wasn't the only one. of course you are not suppose to hit the vise, but then again accidents happen and mis hits were very common hence so many broken vises.

ALL: i drove 4 hours at 3am to avoid traffic to pick up this little Reed 106 on it's stand where it's been sitting for over 30+ years in a custom fab auto shop. finally a Reed 106 without a missing, replacement or bent to **** handle. in pretty decent shape and just need to file the back of the dynamic a bit and clean it to get it apart and clean and grease and put it to work. since i couldn't get the dynamic out of it to move it and i left it on it's stand it wasn't too hard getting it in my Honda with help from the prior owner, but it when i lifted it out by myself without dropping it there was a little effort on my part involved cause i didn't have my lift available.

Very nice!
And I don't think my wife would be too happy if we came home with an even bigger load :). But we sure had fun ...

Today's project. A few hours welding and a 10# box of rods later it's done. Just needs a final clean up and paint. 7.5" peter Wright will be living on it. Included a picture of it on for the test fit before I welded everything.

All together including the vise it will weigh somewhere between 600 and 700 pounds. Should be pretty solid.

Boy, you don't waste any time Vintage Nut!
I had the afternoon free, and I've been wanting a vise outside for ages. Don't exactly like using the cutting torch inside, or doing a lot of grinding right beside the mill. Figured I'd get it done

A bit more to do tomorrow. Welding on a pipe and bedding the bottom of the leg in lead. Then clean everything up with flap and wire wheels.

Outlawmws Thanks, I have been wanting a good hand vise to use for a while, I have seen a few but none in a decent condition, it was a nice find buried in a large tote of mostly rusty junk.

Nice trio of 3" vises. I personally would have the Morgan myself, having a 4 1/2" fixed base already. I like the saw horse, a slight variant of the design I build.
The saw horse was something my dad built years ago. They used to look a lot nicer but have lived outside the last 10 years.

The Morgan is definitely a nice little vise, and in great shape. I have the 6" version on my bench, and I think they would look great together.

My favorite of the lot is probably the American scale. Its in good shape, apart from the chunk missing. Be a good little project. It's definitely a solid vise, probably weighs close to double what the Wilton does. Never seen another 3" that comes anywhere close

Thats a copyright 1950 catalogue. I did see one of those big 500 series Records on eBay a couple weeks ago, it didn't get to the end of its auction, they never do.

I have a question. Why are vises with a bronze nut considered better than those with steel nut?

It's a wear thing, bronze is often used as a bearing material.

Thanks for the answer. A related query: is bronze nut better than one made of ductile iron? The reason I am asking this : I am looking at two almost identical vises, one having a phosphor bronze nut and the other ductile iron acme thread. Which one should I go for? Thanks in advance for the reply.:3gears:

I apologize as I dont understand the question. The bronze nut is better than steel because it is softer and will conform better than steel to the spindle. The ductile acme thread is industry standard on these older vises. You certainly wouldn't want bronze for your acme thread (unless you were aboard a submarine killing ship. Those were solid bronze=non-sparking). One has nothing to do with the other, you could have both features on the same vise

As requested, my Parker 3.5" with anvil and horn through the bench vise.

I think this needs a ride in my Simple green tank.

Thank you for the explanation. I guess I was comparing two different features. So as you say, ductile iron acme thread is standard in the old vises and both must have it. Therefore, I must buy the one with bronze nut (amazingly it also has a lower price!) because the other vise must have a steel nut, which is inferior from wear point of view. Am I right in my understanding?:headscrat

Thanks again.:bounce:

Wow! I only need two Wilton bullets to have owned all of them...a 925 and an 800. The 2.5" models keep eluding me, and I haven't wanted to pay up for the couple of 8" models I've found.

If you want to more than double your money on the 2.5".....just saying :D

Of all the people to ask....I mean if anything, I would have expected anyone else asking you if you have one! I am sure that now that you know these are out there, the hunt begins! Good luck, I hope you find a Record and Woden....great bookends :)
