If SK, Wright, Proto, and Armstrong, and many other premium quality brands can make their crowfoots with stamping and make each size out of a correctly sized blank (and not reuse the same size blank for different sizes like cheap chinese manufacturers do- or like Snap On does), why can't snap on, who is charging way more than them (2-3 times the price)?

The answer is, Snap On found a way to save money while relying on their name brand to sell the tools, not the actual quality.

Besides that, laser etching *****. It wears off quickly and then you are left with a tool that has no name, size, or markings of any sort on it. Mr. Tool Truck driver ain't warrantying a tool that doesn't have Snap On clearly on it.

I agree that's other can make a quality product. with or with out stamping

But the claim about using the same dies is speculation.

Yes laser etching ***** but, its a choice you decide on buying into. The fact is they found a way to save money if you don't like it then move on. The reality is it has Zero effect on its ability to remove nuts and bolts.

If your driver is that much of a ***** go though headquarters their much more friendly..

Quality etching doesn't really wear off like marker writing, it can be sanded off though. Its more of a problem on sockets that often rub. That said its still a cheapo move from one of the most expensive tool companies on the planet.

If I were buying today i'd get SK. They scallop out the sides like Snap-On. A lot of other brands don't do anything or just have a single drilled hole.

I have a newly purchased set of Wright flare nut crows feet, half of the set is stamped and half is laser etched...all on the same rail. How's that for quality? Not impressed for the price paid.

For an explanation of why mixed sets like that happen, try reading this. Its about a different topic, but the same idea applies here.

Regardless, I've never seen a laser etched Wright, so pictures would be great to see. I bought some a few months ago that were all stamped. It would be sad to see that Wright has switched to laser etching too :(

Yes, very sad to see wright start doing this, I personally wouldn't consider any other set knowing the Bonney's exist at that price point.

I probably received one of the first sets of the etched crows feet I ordered them back in 2010 when I was in school with my discount. I was quite disappointed also when I received them that they were no longer stamped! I will say the etching has been holding up ok and it is still visible on all of them and I'm sure I will still be able to read it in 10 more years but crows feet are not some thing I use every single day.

The etching is a concern but it's not a big deal. I personally don't like etching from my experience. The important concern is their manufacturing process obviously changed. The next question should be to determine how much of their quality assurance program has changed.

SO holds a high value in terms of quality but if they start skimping out on controlling their quality, that's no longer the brand that I know of.

With the availability of laser etching machines, and the high cost associated with quality brands like Snap-on, i could see counterfeiting becoming more rampant.

I just bought the 12 point 14 and 17mm SO flare/crowfeet for bmw fuel lines and they have stampings, not laser etching. So I guess they arent transitioning the whole line over (?) (these look like a new product to me, with the new logo, just an S)
The gearwrench crows are a good bargain, but I dont know if they make them in the large sizes you need. Same with the flare style SK ones.. theyve been great for me for the price

i wonder how those GearWrench crows feet work, if they will spread or break. Sure are cheap $59.95 a set Canadian vs. $398.35 for Snap-on

Aloha,
What do you all use the crow's feet for? I have both sets, the regular crow feet and also the flare type. I find that the flare type holds better in most cases for what I do. Of course the flare type wouldn't work good on a square nut or bolt but I use the flare for 99 % of my work.

If the laser etching wears off to the point that you can't read it, just warranty it. I kind of like big lettering now that I am getting older.
